Wagner Concert in Leipzig 1988 DDR 3 - Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ('Wach Auf' and Finale)

Описание

Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Conducted by Kurt Masur
1988 Fernsehen der DDR

Final part of the Leipzig Wagner concert features the greatest 'Wach auf!' I have ever heard, the Rundfunkchor are simply magnificent here and provide a thrilling conclusion to what was a supremely satisfying concert in the GDR.

The writer and composer Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) was born in the city of Leipzig in Saxony. The city of his birth paid tribute to one of its most famous sons in 1988, then part of the German Democratic Republic, with an all Wagner concert from the New Gewandhaus concert hall, rebuilt by the GDR government and opened in in 1981. Kurt Masur conducts, with soprano Karan Armstrong and bass-baritone Theo Adam singing excerpts from Tristan und Isolde and Meistersinger, with equally stunning contributions from the Leipzig Radio Choir.

Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 (Kurt Masur, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig)

From the Church of St. Nicolai, Leipzig, Germany 20 Years Peaceful Revolution - Leipzig commemorates the 9th of October 1989 Gewandhausorchester Leipzig Conductor: Kurt Masur Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73 0:28 I. Allegro non troppo 16:15 II. Adagio non troppo 25:48 III. Allegretto grazioso 31:26 IV: Allegro con spirito Watch the full concert here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBjoEdEVMABLHsPnmDHO3SGZ6YFNG5rqO On 9 October 1989, 70,000 people staged a non-violent demonstration calling for more freedom and democracy in the GDR. Thanks to the claim “Peaceful Revolution”, initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the “Peaceful Revolution”, became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paving the foundations for the reunification of the two German states. Exactly 20 years later, the Gewandhausorchester and Kurt Masur commemorate the beginning of the German reunification by presenting the same symphony at the same location.

Gioacchino Rossini - Guglielmo Tell - Overture

Guillaume Tell is an opera in four acts by Gioachino Rossini to a French libretto by Etienne de Jouy and Hippolyte Bis, based on Friedrich Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell. Based on the legend of William Tell, this opera was Rossini's last, even though the composer lived for nearly forty more years. The William Tell Overture, with its famous finale, is a major part of the concert and recording repertoire. While it was first performed by the Paris Opéra at the Salle Le Peletier on 3 August 1829.

WNO - Die Meistersinger - Finale

WNO - Die Meistersinger - Finale

This is from the WNO's concert performance of Die Meistersinger at the 2010 Proms. I was at the opeing night of this in the Cardiff Millenium Centre. Sat in the 2nd row it was one of the most astounding performances I'd ever seen. In Mozart roles I'd never been swept away by the hype around Terfel and only fairly recently started to be converted having seen him as Gianni Schicchi at Covent Garden. As his first Hans Sachs and with the amazing WNO chorus behind him this was a performance and production to dream about to the end of my days. Such a pity that WNO don't seem to have released a DVD of the staged performance. This was one for posterity.
