Wagner Concert in Leipzig 1988 DDR 3 - Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ('Wach Auf' and Finale)

Описание

Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Conducted by Kurt Masur
1988 Fernsehen der DDR

Final part of the Leipzig Wagner concert features the greatest 'Wach auf!' I have ever heard, the Rundfunkchor are simply magnificent here and provide a thrilling conclusion to what was a supremely satisfying concert in the GDR.

The writer and composer Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) was born in the city of Leipzig in Saxony. The city of his birth paid tribute to one of its most famous sons in 1988, then part of the German Democratic Republic, with an all Wagner concert from the New Gewandhaus concert hall, rebuilt by the GDR government and opened in in 1981. Kurt Masur conducts, with soprano Karan Armstrong and bass-baritone Theo Adam singing excerpts from Tristan und Isolde and Meistersinger, with equally stunning contributions from the Leipzig Radio Choir.

Thanks to the claim “Peaceful Revolution”, initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the “Peaceful Revolution”, became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paving the foundations for the reunification of the two German states. They were directed by their principal conductor Christian Thielemann, indisputably one of the great Wagner conductors of our time, and he was joined by the hottest young heroic tenor of recent years, Jonas Kaufmann. The programme features the overtures to the Wagner operas written and premiered in Dresden – 1842 Rienzi, 1843 The Flying Dutchman and 1845 Tannhäuser – as well as great tenor scenes from Rienzi, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin. Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann was celebrated with bravos and tumultuous applause – as were the musicians and Thielemann. 01. Vorspann (1:01) 02. Der fliegende Holländer - Ouvertüre (11:16) 03. Richard Wagner - Lohengrin - Prelude

Richard Wagner - Lohengrin - Prelude

Lohengrin is a romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition. The opera has proved inspirational towards other works of art. Among those deeply moved by the fairy-tale opera was the young King Ludwig II of Bavaria. 'Der Märchenkönig' ('The Fairy-tale King') as he was dubbed later built his ideal fairy-tale castle and dubbed it "New Swan Stone," or "Neuschwanstein", after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig's patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity to compose, build a theatre for, and stage his epic cycle, the Ring of the Nibelung. The most popular and recognizable part of the opera is the Bridal Chorus, better known as "Here Comes the Bride", often played as a processional at weddings in the West. The first production of Lohengrin was in Weimar, Germany on 28 August 1850 at the Staatskapelle Weimar under the direction of Franz Liszt, a close friend and early supporter of Wagner. Richard Wagner - Siegfried Idyll

Richard Wagner - Siegfried Idyll

Conductor: Sergiu Celibidache & Münchner Philharmoniker Apart from the operas, Wagner composed a small number of pieces; this stems from his reluctance to conceive music which didn't belong to the sacredness of the drama, fundamental expression of his thought. The "Siegfried Idyll" is a symphonic poem for chamber orchestra, composed by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, by a small ensemble on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen. Wagner's opera "Siegfried", which was premiered in 1876, incorporates music from the Idyll. It was once thought that the Idyll borrowed musical ideas intended for the opera, but it is now known that the opposite is the case: Wagner adapted melodic material from an unfinished chamber piece in the Idyll and later incorporated it into the love scene between Siegfried and Brunhilde in the opera.
