Wagner Concert in Leipzig 1988 DDR 3 - Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ('Wach Auf' and Finale)

Описание

Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Conducted by Kurt Masur
1988 Fernsehen der DDR

Final part of the Leipzig Wagner concert features the greatest 'Wach auf!' I have ever heard, the Rundfunkchor are simply magnificent here and provide a thrilling conclusion to what was a supremely satisfying concert in the GDR.

The writer and composer Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) was born in the city of Leipzig in Saxony. The city of his birth paid tribute to one of its most famous sons in 1988, then part of the German Democratic Republic, with an all Wagner concert from the New Gewandhaus concert hall, rebuilt by the GDR government and opened in in 1981. Kurt Masur conducts, with soprano Karan Armstrong and bass-baritone Theo Adam singing excerpts from Tristan und Isolde and Meistersinger, with equally stunning contributions from the Leipzig Radio Choir.

They were directed by their principal conductor Christian Thielemann, indisputably one of the great Wagner conductors of our time, and he was joined by the hottest young heroic tenor of recent years, Jonas Kaufmann. The programme features the overtures to the Wagner operas written and premiered in Dresden – 1842 Rienzi, 1843 The Flying Dutchman and 1845 Tannhäuser – as well as great tenor scenes from Rienzi, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin. Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann was celebrated with bravos and tumultuous applause – as were the musicians and Thielemann. 01. Vorspann (1:01) 02. Der fliegende Holländer - Ouvertüre (11:16) 03. Beethoven - Overture to "Egmont" op. 84 (Kurt Masur, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig)

From the Church of St. Nicolai, Leipzig, Germany (Starts at 1:30) 20 Years Peaceful Revolution - Leipzig commemorates the 9th of October 1989 Gewandhausorchester Leipzig Conductor: Kurt Masur Ludwig van Beethoven - “Egmont” overture, Op. 84 Watch the full concert here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBjoEdEVMABLHsPnmDHO3SGZ6YFNG5rqO On 9 October 1989, 70,000 people staged a non-violent demonstration calling for more freedom and democracy in the GDR. Thanks to the claim “Peaceful Revolution”, initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the “Peaceful Revolution”, became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paving the foundations for the reunification of the two German states. Exactly 20 years later, the Gewandhausorchester and Kurt Masur commemorate the beginning of the German reunification by presenting the same symphony at the same location.

Siegfried Funeral Music - Götterdämmerung - Solti - VPO

Siegfried Funeral Music - Götterdämmerung - Solti - VPO

Video showing Vienna Horns in F and Wagner Tuben, they are correctly called Wagner TUBEN (TUBE singular) (as in TUBES) and not TUBAS actually. Time and the need for a translation has changed that to tubas, just so you know (doubting Thomas's please look in the score). This is here to lament the passing of a style of playing that is so rare to encounter these days - sheer uninhibited passionate unbridled and raw playing which has today been replaced by something more sterile and exact. I will blame conductors any day for wanting everything to sound the way a modern recording does. This is from the DECCA DVD "The Golden Ring" which is a Humphrey Burton documentary made during the recording of Götterdämmerung for the Solti Ring Cycle. Buy it from Amazon as well as the CDs with the definitive Siegfriedruf played by Roland Berger aged 21.

Riccardo Chailly, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Christina Landshammer - Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 4

Riccardo Chailly, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Christina Landshammer - Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 4

"The greatest mix of colours that ever existed" was Gustav Mahler's description of the third movement of his Fourth Symphony. Riccardo Chailly, one of the most adept interpreters of Mahler of our time, and the Gewandhaus Orchestra transformed the entire Fourth Symphony into this kaleidoscope of sound. The unmistakable timbre of the orchestra has become synonymous with late Romantic repertoire and Mahler-esque style -- it was described by Der Tagesspiegel as "uncommonly present, even in the thread-fine pianissimo, compact, concentrated, satin". Once more, the connection between Chailly, the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Mahler proved to be exceptional: The way Chailly "moulded the music, which is so familiar to him, with loving gestures, confidently alluding to a thousand subtle details, allowing the orchestra to rise and fall -- that is perfect."

Prelude from 1st act of Die Meistersinger. Composed by Richard Wagner. Piano transcription by Glenn Gould Recorded in January 1974 Now with Closed Captions! Note: If you want to translate the captions for your local language using the automatic translation, please select "English: Without German Accent" at the "Translate from" field. Why? Because Glenn Gould speaks with German accent on this video, and change some words. For example: instead of "them", he speaks "zem". If you chose the caption track "English: Original" to translate, the automatic translator will get confused and probably many errors will appear.
