Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil Rehearse Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture

Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil Rehearse Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture

In 2011, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presented a series of live simulcasts called LA Phil LIVE. This special series included full-concert performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by dynamic Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, live from both Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles as well as Dudamel's home nation, Venezuela. LA Phil LIVE provided fans with access to a unique concert experience that included exclusive interviews, backstage access, Q&A with Gustavo Dudamel and guest artists, special hosts and more. In preparation for the second of these LA Phil LIVE simulcasts, Gustavo Dudamel and the orchestra tirelessly rehearsed Tchaikovsky's Shakespeare-inspired singe-movement orchestral fantasies. In this archival video footage from 2011, Gustavo Dudamel guides the orchestra through refinement of a section in Tchaiovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture. The first Los Angeles Philharmonic performance of this Tchaikovsky piece was in March 1921, nearly a century prior to the LA Phil Live concert for which the orchestra was rehearsing. This overture was a single-movement piece inspired by Shakespeare's play of the same name. Tchaikovsky also wrote works inspired by The Tempest and Hamlet. The overall design of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture is that of a symphonic tone poem based on three major elements of the Shakespeare story. In this rehearsal footage, Dudamel focuses on a section roughly 5-1/2 minutes into the piece, bringing particular attention to articulation, tempo, score notations and maximization of clarity between orchestral sections. The music of Tchaikovsky will be in the spotlight at the Hollywood Bowl as conductor Lionel Bringuier conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in performances of Rococo Variations and this Romeo and Juliet overture on July 9, 2015. Get tickets at http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/romeo. There will also be a Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks July 25 and 26, 2015! Tickets available now at http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tchaikspec.

We loved it. It combined two of the things we are working to accomplish -- inviting people to classical music and inspiring young musicians. Steven Sharp Nelson had soloed with the orchestra the previous year and loved the spirit and the talent that the orchestra showed at such young ages (ages 13-18!) Together we developed the concept of "Beethoven's 5 Secrets," combining OneRepublic's tune "Secrets" with melodies and moments from all four movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. We used 5 different melodies from the 4 movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony (not including the "bridge" the orchestra plays in the middle). Try to guess where they are and where they come from! What are Beethoven's secrets? He had many. His most prominent secret that he desperately tried to keep from the public and that caused him to be considered extremely eccentric, irritable, and hermit-like was his "weakness." He was deaf during most of his life. Imagine that...one of the greatest composers that ever lived could hardly hear. And yet, he wrote his life's greatest works after becoming deaf. He believed that art itself had "secrets" that had to be "forced into" in order to obtain art's highest level. There is no doubt Beethoven discovered many of the "secrets" of art -- people all over the world enjoy them every day. He was a true master of music, blessed by God. This piece and video are dedicated to him. The album contains Rachmaninov's piano concerto No. 3 and Prokofiev's piano concerto No. 2 and is released on Deutsche Grammophon. The album captures the extraordinary energy levels of a very special evening in Caracas. Rachmaninov's hugely popular Piano Concerto No.3 is his longest, most ambitious and most technically complex work for piano and orchestra. Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.2 is phenomenally emotional and intense music that also presents huge technical challenges for the soloist - particularly in the long and ferociously complex first movement cadenza. Johannes BRAHMS Gustavo DUDAMEL variation on a theme by HAYDN op.56

Gustavo Adolfo Dudamel Ramírez (born January 26, 1981) is a Venezuelan conductor and violinist. He is the music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He is honorary conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony in Gothenburg, Sweden. Dudamel was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, the son of a trombonist and a voice teacher.[4] He studied music from an early age, becoming involved with El Sistema, the famous Venezuelan musical education program, and took up the violin at age ten. He soon began to study composition. He attended the Jacinto Lara Conservatory, where he was taught the violin by José Luis Jiménez. He then went on to work with José Francisco del Castillo at the Latin-American Violin Academy. He began to study conducting in 1995, first with Rodolfo Saglimbeni, then later with José Antonio Abreu. In 1999, he was appointed music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, the national youth orchestra of Venezuela, and toured several countries. He attended Charles Dutoit's master class in Buenos Aires in 2002, and worked as assistant for Simon Rattle in Berlin and Salzburg in 2003. Gustavo Dudamel won a number of conducting competitions, including the Gustav Mahler Conducting Prize in Germany in 2004. His reputation began to spread, and he was noticed by conductors such as Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado, who accepted invitations to conduct the Simón Bolívar Orchestra in Venezuela. Dudamel debuted with the Philharmonia, the Israel Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others, in 2005, and also signed a recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. In 2005, Gustavo Dudamel first conducted the Gothenburg Symphony at the BBC Proms, on short notice as a replacement for the indisposed Neeme Järvi. In 2006, Dudamel was named Principal Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony. He continues to retain his position with the Simón Bolívar National Youth Orchestra. He took up the Gothenburg post in 2007, and his contract ended there in 2012. He made his debut at La Scala, Milan, with Don Giovanni in November 2006. On September 10, 2007, he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time at the Lucerne Festival. On April 16, 2007, Gustavo Dudamel conducted the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in a concert in commemoration of the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI, with Hilary Hahn as solo violinist, with the Pope and many other church dignitaries among the audience. In March 2008, he made his debut with the San Francisco Symphony. In 2013, Dudamel conducted the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra during the funeral of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. (...
