Why Machines That Bend Are Better

Why Machines That Bend Are Better

Compliant mechanisms have lots of advantages over traditional devices. SimpliSafe is awesome security. It's really effective, easy to use, and the price is great. Check out SimpliSafe here: https://simplisafe.com/veritasium I visited the Compliant Mechanisms Research group at Brigham Young University and spoke to Professor Larry Howell: https://www.compliantmechanisms.byu.edu At the above link, you can download 3D-print files to make some of the objects in the video, plus learn more about compliant mechanisms. What I learned about compliant mechanisms I summarize in the 8 P's of compliant mechanisms: 1. Part count (reduced by having flexible parts instead of springs, hinges) 2. Productions processes (many, new, different enabled by compliant designs) 3. Price (reduced by fewer parts and different production processes) 4. Precise Motion (no backlash, less wear, friction) 5. Performance (no outgassing, doesn't require lubricant) 6. Proportions (reduced through different production processes) 7. Portability (lightweight due to simpler, reduced part count designs) 8. Predictability (devices are reliable over a long period of time) Special thanks to Patreon supporters: Donal Botkin, James M Nicholson, Michael Krugman, Nathan Hansen, Ron Neal, Stan Presolski, Terrance Shepherd Animation by Alan Chamberlain

Check out Sean’s docuseries SPEED and over 2,000 other features and series with 30 days free using code vsauce2: https://www.CuriosityStream.com/Vsauce2 Huge thanks to CuriosityStream for supporting Vsauce2. We play two-player games all day, every day, and our lives are a real-time exercise in game theory. We work out how to make the best move based not only on what we want the outcome to be, but also based on how we think the other player is going to act. Since they’re usually going through the same rough thought process -- sometimes consciously, sometimes subconsciously -- we’re embroiled in a constant series of games with all of us wanting to win. Winning can be the best result for you or the best outcome given the circumstances, and players are implicitly sorting out their strategies in a recursive process that waffles between self-interest and cooperation. Whether we’re driving down the highway and trying to go as fast as we can without getting pulled over or just trying not to be weird with our crush, we’re playing a game… and it turns out that a little cooperation goes a long way. *** SOURCES *** Robert Axelrod, “The Evolution of Cooperation” https://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Cooperation-Revised-Robert-Axelrod/dp/0465005640 Prisoner’s Dilemma: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/prisoner-dilemma/ *** LINKS *** Vsauce2 Links Twitter: https://twitter.com/VsauceTwo Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/VsauceTwo Hosted and Produced by Kevin Lieber Instagram: http://instagram.com/kevlieber Twitter: https://twitter.com/kevleeb Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/thecreateunknown Research And Writing by Matthew Tabor https://twitter.com/matthewktabor Editing by Aspect Science https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyi06SeKkiwoAzFVmQtDtfg Camera by Jake Roper: http://www.youtube.com/vsauce3 Audio by Jack Merline Huge Thanks To Paula Lieber https://www.etsy.com/shop/Craftality Get Vsauce's favorite science and math toys delivered to your door! https://www.curiositybox.com/ Select Music By Jake Chudnow: http://www.youtube.com/user/JakeChudnow #education #vsauce

Thanks for the sharp eyes that caught that! For those who want to learn more, I highly recommend the book by Michael Nielsen introducing neural networks and deep learning: https://goo.gl/Zmczdy There are two neat things about this book. First, it's available for free, so consider joining me in making a donation Nielsen's way if you get something out of it. And second, it's centered around walking through some code and data which you can download yourself, and which covers the same example that I introduce in this video. Yay for active learning! https://github.com/mnielsen/neural-networks-and-deep-learning I also highly recommend Chris Olah's blog: http://colah.github.io/ For more videos, Welch Labs also has some great series on machine learning: https://youtu.be/i8D90DkCLhI https://youtu.be/bxe2T-V8XRs For those of you looking to go *even* deeper, check out the text "Deep Learning" by Goodfellow, Bengio, and Courville. The Enigma Machine Explained

The Enigma Machine Explained

As technology increases, so do the methods of encryption and decryption we have at our disposal. World War II saw wide use of various codes from substitution ciphers to employing Navajo code talkers in the Pacific theater. Here, science journalist and author Simon Singh demonstrates the German enigma machine, a typewriter-like device used to encrypt communications. He demonstrates not only its operation, but both the strength and fatal flaws in its method.
