1991 NBA All Star Game

1991 NBA All Star Game

Here's something different for a change. 1991 All Star featuring some great players from the golden era. This one probably had the weirdest ending of all All Star games. Some quotes about the final play of the game: ==================== With three seconds to play, Kevin Johnson put up the shot. "It felt good when it left my hands," he said. "It was definitely going in. It was the game. I was going to be a star, without a doubt." But just as the ball arrived over the front rim, Malone leaped and tried to tap it in. He was called for offensive basket interference. And that was probably the end of Kevin Johnson as possible MVP. That honor went to Barkley for his 17-point, 22-rebound and four-assist game. The 22 rebounds were the most in an All-Star game since Wilt Chamberlain's 22 in 1967. "From my point of view, the shot looked like it had a great chance of going in," Magic Johnson said. "I was thinking, `Yeah, yeah, yeah. . . . What is he (Malone) doing?' I don't know what he was doing. All I know is the shot looked good. It was a perfect shot whether you win or lose on it." "I think Karl was in disbelief about what he did," Kevin Johnson said. "It was a weird way to end a good game," Robinson said. "I thought the shot had a good chance of going in. But it was hard for me to tell because I was going to the board for the rebound." "I should probably have let it alone," Malone said. "But I wasn't sure if it was going in. No, I wasn't paying off any bookies in Las Vegas. "I just wanted to run and hide after I did it." ======================

Allen Iverson & Michael Jordan 2003 NBA All Star Highlight

Allen Iverson & Michael Jordan 2003 NBA All Star Highlight

Michael Jordan got the start and provided one more lasting moment. But it was all Kevin Garnett at the finish. The 52nd NBA All-Star Game was Jordan's last and filled with firsts as the Western Conference exhausted the Eastern Conference 155-145 in a double-overtime thriller. Given a surprise start as Toronto's Vince Carter stepped aside, Jordan appeared to make yet another of his seemingly endless series of game-winning shots. The superstar swingman of the Washington Wizards threw in a high-arcing jumper from the right baseline over Phoenix's Shawn Marion that gave the East a 138-136 lead with 4.8 seconds left in the first overtime, bringing a roar from the Philips Arena crowd. "I didn't think it was going to go in, but it went in," said Marion, who was victimized for a game-winning shot by Jordan in Phoenix last season. "I thought it was the game-winner, but anything can happen in an NBA game," Jordan said. Anything did. A foul call on a three-point attempt put Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant at the line for three free throws with one second to go. Bryant made just two free throws to tie the game. "The first thing when Kobe got up, he said, 'I can't believe he called that,'" said Indiana forward Jermaine O'Neal, who committed the foul. Bryant's free throws forced an unprecedented second extra session, which belonged entirely to Garnett. The 7-footer of the Minnesota Timberwolves -- who played shooting guard earlier in the game -- took the smaller Carter into the low post for three straight jumpers. He added a foul shot for a 145-138 lead with 3:38 remaining, and the West never trailed again. "It looked like old 23 crept back in the building and was trying to take the game, but for the most part, we hung together and won," Garnett said. Garnett collected his first All-Star Game MVP award as he scored 37 points on 17-of-24 shooting and added nine rebounds and five steals. His points were the most in an All-Star Game since Jordan scored 40 in 1988. "The All-Star Game is not about individual," said Garnett, an unselfish superstar. "It's totally a group effort. It's a time for you to share stories, good times, emotional times with your teammates." Jordan, who turns 40 in eight days, gave Garnett some stories to share. He started very slowly and even missed a dunk in the first quarter. But he became the all-time leading scorer in the All-Star Game late in the third quarter and finished with 20 points on 9-of-27 shooting. "I think I got a chance to enjoy some good young company tonight," Jordan said. Some of that company joined Jordan on the Eastern Conference. Guards Allen Iverson of Philadelphia and Tracy McGrady of Orlando -- both of whom offered their starting spot to Jordan -- scored 35 and 29 points, respectively. But it wasn't enough to prevent the East from dropping to 32-20 in the all-time series. "I was going to try to forget my jersey in the locker room," McGrady said. "That way (Jordan) had to start and go out there." Bryant scored 22 points and Steve Francis of Houston added 20 for the West, which erased an eight-point deficit in the last two minutes of regulation and blew a seven-point lead in the last two-plus minutes of the first overtime. San Antonio's Tim Duncan had 19 points and 15 rebounds and the Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal had 19 and 13. It was the sixth overtime All-Star Game and the first since 1993 in Utah. Although the first quarter was the lowest-scoring opening period in 50 years and the first half the lowest since 1976, the game fell three points shy of the highest-scoring contest, another overtime affair in 1987. The pace seemed to quicken a bit after a halftime ceremony in which Jordan was serenaded by Mariah Carey, who wore No. 23 jerseys of Chicago and Washington while performing three songs, including "Hero." "I thank you for your support," a visibly humbled Jordan said to the crowd. "I leave the game in good hands." "The halftime ceremony was something I'll remember for a long time," said Francis, who was playing in his second All-Star Game. "I felt like he was talking to me when he said the NBA was going to be in good hands." McGrady took the third quarter into his hands, scoring 17 points to give the East a 93-86 lead. With 2:04 to go in the period, Jordan sank two free throws to move past Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (251 points) as the all-time leading scorer. The West overtook the East at 102-100 on a dunk by Shaquille O'Neal with 8:14 to go, but McGrady responded with a three-pointer. Three jumpers by Jordan and a drive by Iverson pushed the lead to 116-106 left and tightened the MVP race. It appeared to be Jordan's when he flipped in a left-handed shot on 7-footer Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas for a 120-112 lead with 1:58 to play. But he missed shots on three consecutive possessions, allowing the West back in it. "I wanted it to be a competitive game," Jordan said. "It was a fun ending anyway you look at it." Bryant had a chance to win it when he was fouled with 17 seconds left but split the pair, and Marion partially blocked Jordan's jumper at the other end. Despite eight overtime points from Iverson, the East looked dead when Francis hammered home a lob for a 135-128 bulge with 2:09 remaining. But McGrady and New Jersey's Jason Kidd scored four points each as the East surged to a 136-135 edge with 33 seconds left. A free throw by Shaquille O'Neal tied it. "It's easy to come in with the attitude that you are just going to run down the court and jump around and not play hard, but that's not what it is about," Iverson said. "I think the fans deserve more than that." The fans got a huge treat when Carter -- who had been criticized for keeping his starting spot -- stepped aside for Jordan in a classy move. "This is a storybook ending for Michael," Carter said. "I'm sure I'll have another opportunity to be in the All-Star Game, and this is how it's supposed to be." "I felt like he had taken a beating and he shouldn't have," Jordan said. "I think he was being very respectful." But Jordan missed eight of his first 10 shots, and the poor shooting was contagious. The East held a pedestrian 23-18 lead after one period and the West held a 55-52 halftime edge.

Michael Jordan 2003 All-Star Game Fadeaway (w. commentary)

Michael Jordan 2003 All-Star Game Fadeaway (w. commentary)

NBA All-Star Game 2003 "The fadeaway... YES!" With the game on the line in Jordan's final All-Star game appearance, the GOAT busts it out one more time; high arc, bottom of the net, fist pump(Benny Sin style). Marv Albert's commentary, as usual, makes another classic Jordan moment all the more dramatic. This shot would have been the game winner and another feather in Jordan's cap had it not been for a foolish foul by Jermaine O'Neal on Kobe Bryant on the other end, who hit two free throws to send the game into a second overtime period. Since this was billed as Jordan's last All-Star game there was a lot of hype going in and all eyes were on him. Vince Carter was more or less shamed into giving up his starting spot to him. Players were getting him the ball trying to get him buckets but he actually had a sub-par performance by his standards, needing 27 shots to get his 20 points. But this shot is just another example of Jordan's superhuman ability to consistently rise to the occasion and deliver in pressure situations. Like Marv Albert said, crunch time "is Michael Jordan time".

NBA Greatest Duels: Allen Iverson vs. Tracy McGrady (2004)

NBA Greatest Duels: Allen Iverson vs. Tracy McGrady (2004)

http://www.change.org/petitions/nba-commissioner-david-stern-allow-allen-iverson-to-play-in-nba-again-and-retire-like-a-great Pls sign the petition!!! Allen Iverson regained his scoring touch in time to save the Philadelphia 76ers. Still struggling with his shooting following a knee injury, Iverson scored 26 points -- his most in more than a month -- in Philadelphia's 87-82 victory over Orlando on Monday night. Iverson has only been back a week after sitting out 10 games because of a bruised right knee. But he has a while to go to regain his All-Star form. "My rhythm is way off. I'm struggling," said Iverson, shooting 37 percent in five games since returning. "It's frustrating that it's taking so long for my game to come back. But by being in the league eight years, I've been through struggles and I know how to play while struggling." Philadelphia took control midway through the third quarter with 11 straight points to go up 68-60. Orlando's Keith Bogans stopped the run with a jumper despite being knocked down, but Iverson seized the momentum back with his lone 3-pointer of the night. Iverson shot 9-for-29, 1-for-4 on 3-pointers, with seven assists and six turnovers. The last time he topped 20 points was Dec. 5, when he scored 35 in a victory in Miami. The 76ers are 3-2 since Iverson returned. "The games we lose, it hurts worse," Iverson said. "But in the games that we win, I don't think about it." Samuel Dalembert set career highs with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He fouled out late in the game, but only after his block of Tracy McGrady's driving dunk with 2:54 remaining blunted Orlando's comeback. Dalembert, who blocked three shots, started because Derrick Coleman missed his 12th game of the season with a left knee sprain. "Samuel was great in terms of defending the rim," 76ers coach Randy Ayers said. Glenn Robinson added 19 points, and Kenny Thomas and Eric Snow each added 13. Thomas also tied his season high with 16 rebounds. The 76ers missed 14 of 17 shots in the fourth quarter, including their last 10, with their final field goal coming on Dalembert's jumper with 7:32 remaining. But they made eight of 10 late free throws to hold off the Magic. Orlando has lost seven of eight and missed a chance to move into a tie with Atlanta for the league's worst record. McGrady scored 32 points for Orlando, including 10 of the Magic's 16 in the fourth quarter. He also had 10 rebounds. Less than 17 seconds remained when Orlando closed within a possession on McGrady's layup. But Snow hit two free throws and McGrady missed a 3-pointer with 8.9 seconds to go. McGrady missed all nine of his 3-point tries, shooting 13-for-30. "Shots were going in and out, good shots," McGrady said. "I'd take those shots any game. It just wasn't our night on the offensive end." Bogans added 20 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line. He opened Orlando's scoring with a 3-pointer, but the Magic shot 1-for-17 beyond the arc after that. "I guess I had an 'on' game tonight," said Bogans, 2-for-5 on 3-pointers. "I made shots, but I can't speak for anybody else." Orlando shot 36 percent -- 26.2 percent after halftime. The 76ers jumped out to an early 11-point lead by making 11 of their first 20 shots -- despite six misses from Iverson. Dalembert made all four of his shots in the first quarter while grabbing seven rebounds. Game notes Philadelphia got no scoring from its bench until Greg Buckner's free throw with 5.7 seconds left to play ... NBA commissioner David Stern attended the game. Stern is in Florida for a sporting goods show in Orlando and the league's marketing meetings in Boca Raton. ... Philadelphia is 14-4 when holding opponents 86 points or less. ... During a second-quarter break in the action, McGrady amazed the crowd with a trick shot. He tossed up a rainbow from behind the backboard that bounced off the top of the glass before falling through the hoop.
