Описание

Dejian Zeng spent 12 hours a day attaching one screw to iPhones. As part of his summer project, the NYU grad student went undercover for 6 weeks at a Pegatron factory in Shanghai. He lived on-site in a dorm with 7 other people and got to experience what really goes into making the popular mobile device. He tells us what it was like.

How I Made My Own iPhone - in China

How I Made My Own iPhone - in China

I built a like-new(but really refurbished) iPhone 6S 16GB entirely from parts I bought in the public cell phone parts markets in Huaqiangbei. And it works! How much did it cost? Answer here: https://youtu.be/-KucQDXnKws I've been fascinated by the cell phone parts markets in Shenzhen, China for a while. I'd walked through them a bunch of times, but I still didn't understand basic things, like how they were organized or who was buying all these parts and what they were doing with them. So when someone mentioned they wondered if you could build a working smartphone from parts in the markets, I jumped at the chance to really dive in and understand how everything works. Well, I sat on it for nine months, and then I dove in. Well, firstly, we are all human, and secondly, when hundreds or thousands of people work on a product, someone will surely make a mistake. Just imagine, what if, for example, someone brought a MacBook to the launch of a new Microsoft product and put it in the most visible place? Yes, it would be a real scandal! In any case, here we have ten of the most epic fails of the big companies.

The Incredible Story of The PayPal Mafia

The Incredible Story of The PayPal Mafia

Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/neoscribe Like all great origin stories, The PayPal Mafia is an origin story that deserves to be told and retold. From Social Media to the auto and aerospace industries, the impact of the PayPal Mafia is amazing, serving as the launching point for six members to become billionaires. The story of PayPal actually begins with palm pilots. If you are too young to remember these, Palm Pilots was a specific brand of a device called a personal digital assistant, or PDAs. Before the smart phone era, PDAs were cutting edge handheld PCs with the ability to connect to the internet, they were truly awesome for the time and were getting popular by the late 1990’s. And it was in 1998, Peter Thiel and Max Levchin decided to develop technology to allow person to person payments via the use of PDAs, namely Palm Pilots. You see, back in those days, sending money to someone was inconvenient compared to today. You were limited to cash or writing a check, and if you were far apart you would have to send it through the mail. Over the years, credit and debit card infrastructure expanded but they were limited to merchants. So, with Thiel and Levchin’s idea, people could beam money from one another through an app on their palm pilots essentially creating a digital wallet. Thiel graduated from Stanford and worked as a lawyer and former derivatives trader in New York before he moved back to SF to start a hedge fund. Upon his return, Thiel delivered a guest lecture and that’s where he met Levchin. Levchin’s migrated from the Soviet Union to Chicago when he was 16 in 1991. He went on to the University of Illinois where he studied to become a computer scientist. After college, he founded an automated marketing software company called NetMeridian which he ended up selling to Microsoft. Musk was a child prodigy from South Africa, he taught himself how to code around 10 years old and at 12 he developed a video game called Blastar and sold the code for $500 which is around $1300 today. By February 1999, at the age of 27, he sold his first start up Zip2 to Compact for $307 which he received $22 million. And a month later Musk and his friend and business partner Greg Kouri founded X.com, the first, online bank. SOURCES: **Books: The PayPal Wars by Eric M. WHY DO WE FLY SO SLOWLY?

WHY DO WE FLY SO SLOWLY?

TechZone ► https://goo.gl/Gj3wZs Perhaps you've heard that lately planes are flying way too slow. After all, if you can launch a Tesla into space, why not make planes a little faster? Some people think that it is the fault of lazy engineers and designers who don't want to create something better. It is an interesting opinion, but the answer to today's question is a little more complicated. So, are you ready to discover why modern aircraft are slow? Fasten your seat belt and put your seat in the upright position. Have a pleasant flight and... let's get it on!

Vietnam Interviews

■ VIET FAMILY INVITE ME TO THEIR HOME: https://youtu.be/6_JubkLPlEk ■ SAIGON, VIETNAM: Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam's most populous city, rivals that of other Asian countries for sheer size and have also started to catch up in terms of tourism arrivals. 11 million foreigners visited the country during the first 11 months of 2017. Wandering around downtown Ho Chi Minh though, and especially whilst hanging out in the city's Walking Street, or the traditional backpackers area if you will. I can't help but wonder where they all are? In similar Walking Streets be it in Thailand or the Philipines you're bound to run into more foreigners than locals. That is far from the case though in Saigon. And in all honesty, that doesn't bother me one bit. It's infinitely better to be one of a few as opposed to one of too many. I therefore thoroughly enjoyed this night out in Saigon, chatting with locals and wandering around taking in the sights and sounds. ■ PODCAST: https://www.patreon.com/haraldbaldr

Why Do We Boil Lobsters Alive?

Why Do We Boil Lobsters Alive?

Whenever you enter a restaurant, you're putting your health in someone else's hands. Thousands of people get sick from food poisoning each year. But thankfully chefs can take steps to minimize the risk. One of those ways? Boiling lobsters alive. Turns out, those unusual tanks of live lobsters in restaurants isn't just there so you can have a plate of fresh lobster. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is a transcript of the video: If you walked into a kitchen and saw a pig cooked alive on the stove, you’d probably be horrified and lose your appetite. Yet, this is how millions of lobsters meet their fate in American kitchens each year. Some people even relish choosing which lobster’s time is up at restaurants or markets across the country. But is a lobster really any different from other animals we eat? Why do we boil lobsters alive? And why do places even sell live lobsters? Turns out, this seemingly barbaric way of cooking lobsters could actually save your life. Humans were boiling lobsters alive thousands of years ago. The first recorded case came from recipes attributed to the famous Roman Cook Caelius Apicius in the first century. American chefs later adopted the process by 1880, when they discovered that the dish looks and tastes better when the animal is boiled alive. It wasn’t until later that we realized this also reduces the risk of severe food poisoning. That’s all because of these little guys. They’re a type of Vibrio bacteria. And they thrive on the decaying flesh of lobsters and other shellfish. If a lobster dies, you only have a few hours before these bacteria show up to the party. And once they’re in, it’s nearly impossible to get rid of them. Even cooking the lobster meat won’t kill all of the bacteria. So it’s safer to just keep the animal alive right up until you serve it. If Vibrio bacteria end up in your system, it’s not pretty. You can experience abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and sometimes even death. Luckily, there’s a pretty good way to tell if that meat has gone bad. Just smell it. You can easily smell the ammonia that is released when the body starts to decompose. So boiling lobsters alive save us from a world of pain, but what about the lobsters? For starters, lobsters don't scream when you boil them. In fact, they lack lungs and don’t even have the proper biological equipment to form a scream. What you hear is air and steam escaping from the shells of their simmering suppers. In any case - we don't do this to chickens or pigs because it’s pretty obvious that they can feel pain. For lobsters, it’s less clear if their primitive nervous systems and brains even know what pain is. When a lobster thrashes around in the pot does that mean it’s in agony? Or is it simply a reflex response to the boiling water, but not a conscious action? No one really knows, so more research is needed. Regardless, some say this uncertainty is exactly why we should think twice. Anil Seth: With lobsters, we just don't know if they can feel pain. There’s a thing in ethics that we call the Precautionary Principle, when not knowing we should err on the side of caution. If there is the potential for something to have the ability to suffer, we should treat that possibility very seriously. So boiling lobsters, not a very good idea. New Zealand and Switzerland certainly agree. They’ve gone so far as to make it illegal to boil lobsters alive. Should America follow suit?

Inside Hong Kong’s cage homes

Inside Hong Kong’s cage homes

When houses are the size of parking spaces. Follow Johnny on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johnnywharris/ Follow the Vox Borders watch page: https://www.facebook.com/VoxBorders/ Sign up for the Borders newsletter: http://www.vox.com/borders-email With original music by Tom Fox: https://m.soundcloud.com/user-416166523 Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin. 10 Things Americans Do That Confuse The Rest Of The World!

10 Things Americans Do That Confuse The Rest Of The World!

Top things Americans do that confuse everyone else! These are the confusing and weird customs of americans and things americans do that confuse the rest of the world! #5. “Hollywood Smile”-- Another place that foreigners think Americans are wasting water is at the Dentist’s office. While dental hygiene in other countries may not be as bad as it is stereotyped to be, like in England, they aren’t quite as obsessed with attaining or maintaining the perfect smile in the way that Americans have. Where Americans have been known to spend thousands of dollars on braces and whitening procedures in order to get a pearly white Hollywood grill many foreigners are content with crooked and discolored teeth as long as they aren’t falling out or making them look like Nosferatu. Most foreigners from first world nations care about their teeth, they just haven’t become indoctrinated with the intense beauty standards American society has made a part of its culture in regards to dental perfection. In many countries, having a brighter than normal smile that is unnaturally straight is viewed as superficial to the point of being unattractive or off-putting. #4. “Dining Out”-- Tipping your server and taking home leftover food. Two habits that are so ingrained in the American dining experience that they can be hard to kick, but rest assured if you try doing these outside of the US you are sure to draw confused looks and reveal your Stars and Stripes. In most Asian and European countries a service charge is either already included in your bill or it is not customary to leave a tip. In many places if you do try to tip you can offend your waiter, this is because a tip can be seen as a person having pity on their server or offering some sort of charity. In some countries giving good service is expected whereas in the United States the food industry has become a sort of meritocracy. Foreigners see this as absurd, why should a server be rewarded for something they should be doing in the first place? However, In places where tipping is insulting waitstaff aren’t ridiculously underpaid like they are in the U.S. The other habit that can draw the scoffs of onlookers at a restaurant outside the United States is asking for a ‘doggy bag’ or ‘to-go box’. In many countries, especially European ones the idea of saving a hot meal at a restaurant in order to reheat it and eat it at home is a disgusting prospect. Many dining cultures believe that the food is meant to be eaten exactly how it is prepared by the chef or cook at that moment, not to be consumed after the various sauces and meat juices congeal or have their perfect grilling or baking sullied by your microwave. A lot of the reason that Americans have developed this custom of bringing scraps home with them is due to portion sizes being generally much larger in the States than elsewhere. This may be a result of capitalist consumers becoming obsessed with getting their money’s worth causing restaurants to have slowly battled to stuff people’s gullets.

12 Things You Didn’t Know The Purpose Of

12 Things You Didn’t Know The Purpose Of

12 Things You Didn’t Know The Purpose Of ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Have you ever wondered why manufacturers place small plastic discs inside of soda bottle caps? Or why all jeans seem to have randomly placed metal studs? There are so many little details that we overlook when it comes to everyday objects. Sometimes we assume that they have no purpose at all, and that they exist for purely aesthetic reasons. Other times we guess, correctly or otherwise, at what they might be designed to do. More often than not, they do have a specific purpose or use, and it is simply that we are ignorant of this fact. We’d bet that these are 12 things you didn’t know the purpose of; 12. The Stripes on Your Headphone Jack The rings on your headphone jack are neither for decoration nor grip, as some people may assume; they are, in fact, sections of insulation designed to protect the wiring that allows sound to be carried to both headphones. 11. Nail Cuticles If you pay any attention to your nails and hands, you will most likely know what your cuticles are. This hard strip of skin at the bed of your nails may seem to be a useless chance of nature, but in actual fact, they are key to the health of our nails. 10. Notebook Margins Believe it or not, the purpose of the margins in your notebook has nothing to do with getting criticisms from your professor or notes from your editor! Certainly, the margins are now used for noting corrections or making suggestions, but this was not always so. Historically, books and notes were most likely to be damaged by rodents 9. The Plastic Disc Under Your Soda Lid That little blue disc of plastic under your soda cap? It’s not just there to print codes or prize giveaways on; it’s a pressure seal that performs the vital function of keeping the liquid and gas in, and the air around you out. 8. The Raised Bumps on the “F” and “J” Keys Take a look at your keyboard. You may have noticed that the F and J keys have raised dots or bumps. If you spend a lot of time using a computer, you will definitely have noticed, but you may not know what they’re for. 7. The Diamond Shape on Your Backpack Those diamond shapes on your backpacks are also known as lash tabs, lashing squares, or pig snouts! That’s right – they have a name and a reason for being there. Lash tabs are not just included in the design for decoration; they pay homage to a time when backpacks were mostly used by hikers and climbers. 6. The Hole in Your Chupa-Chups Stick There is more than one theory about why the hole at the end of the Chupa-Chups stick exists. Some people say it’s there to counteract a potential choking hazard, others that it’s there for children to whistle through once they finish. The truth is a little more mundane (though close to the first speculation). 5. The Hole in Your Ballpoint Pen It’s common knowledge that the hole in the lid of your ballpoint is to prevent choking should you accidentally swallow it, but what about the hole in the middle of the pen shaft? Have you noticed that before? 4. The Blue and White Erasers Everyone heard that the blue half of these erasers was meant for “rubbing out” ink. Of course, when we tried it, the eraser did little more than smudge the ink and ruin the paper. So, what is that blue half of this eraser for? 3. The Soft Inner Lining of Your Underwear So, you’ve probably noticed that there is a second lining of a sort in your underwear. This secondary lining, made of soft, tissue-like cotton, is called a gusset and is required if underwear is to meet the necessary health standards. 2. The Unexplained Studs on Your Jeans Have you noticed the metal studs that seem to randomly dot the seams of your jeans? Well, they too have a specific purpose and history. When Levi Strauss first began making jeans, they were primarily worn by miners and farmers; manual laborers, in short, were his main consumer base. 1. The Thick Cylinders Found on Electrical Cables The correct name for these nifty little guys is “ferrite core” or “choke”, and they are not just a design feature with a mundane or purely aesthetic purpose; they have a very important, very high-tech function. So, did you know the function of these 12 everyday items, or was this as much of a surprise to you as it was to us?
