What Happened When I Ate Nothing But

What Happened When I Ate Nothing But "Healthy" Fast Food For A Week

America has an obesity problem, but there are more 200,000 fast foods restaurants dotted throughout the country. Customers have been moving towards places with healthier menus, and many traditional chains are adding items to address this. I tried eating these "healthy" fast foods for an entire week. I had every meal at McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Burger King, Subway, Dunkin' Donuts or Chick-fil-A. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Kevin Reilly: Fast food is cheap and convenient. But hidden in between the burgers and tacos are some "healthy" options: salads, grilled chicken, yogurts, oatmeal, power burritos. Doesn't sound too bad, right? I spent a week eating nothing but these "healthy" fast foods and I lost six-and-a-half pounds. But even though I lost about a pound a day, it didn't really go well. I live in New York City, a place with every possible food you could want. Eating healthy here, it's a breeze. But across America, there are more than 200,000 fast food joints, and they're bringing in more than $200 billion a year in sales. And no matter where you go, you're never far from a place like McDonald's or Taco Bell. But in recent years, consumers want better, healthier choices, and the traditional fast food places have been losing customers to those fast casual healthy options. The rules were pretty simple: Eat every major meal at a national fast food chain and stick to the healthy options. McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Dunkin' Donuts, Subway, and Chick-fil-A; nothing but them for a week. Yeah, I lost almost seven pounds, but let's take a close look at the numbers. On a normal day, I'm eating around 2,500 calories. An adult man should be having about 2,400 to 2,600 calories a day. But on this fast food plan, my calories plummeted. Most of these meals came in under 400 calories, and that was one of my first problems. I'd eat and just a couple hours later, I was starving. And I had days when I didn't eat more than 1,000 calories. Now, some of these meals were really good. My favorite was this grilled chicken market salad from Chick-fil-A. It had blueberries, strawberries, apples; it was delicious and it was actually healthy. However, a lot of the other salads from Burger King, McDonald's, and Wendy's were loaded with salt, often more than 50% of what I needed for the entire day, from a salad. In fact, excess salt was a problem the entire week. I thought I had hit the jackpot with Taco Bell's al Fresco menu. They take off all the cheese and mayo-based sauces and replace it with lettuce and pico de gallo. One night I got tacos, another night I got a power cantina burrito, and these were meals with more protein than usual. So, I felt like I was getting enough food. They were good, too good. It was all salt. In fact, just one burrito had almost as much salt as I needed in just one day. The American Heart Association says we should limit our sodium to about 2,300 milligrams a day, but the ideal is closer to 1,500 milligrams a day, especially for a person like me with high blood pressure. But if you look at my sodium intake, it was high every day, yet I was barely getting the calories I needed. If I wanted to keep the sodium down, I was starving. If I wanted to feel full, salt through the roof. You see, that's an issue in the fast food industry. Wendy's even acknowledges on their website that there's going to be a trade-off between salt and flavor. It was weird. I didn't feel healthy at all throughout the week, even though I was eating healthy foods and losing weight. And on the last day, I had this massive headache that was just infuriating. These places, they're supposed to be tasty, cheap, and convenient. But it wasn't cheap. Every healthy option was expensive, but left me hungry. For eight grilled nuggets and this tiny kale salad at Chick-fil-A, $12. For the power Mediterranean salad at Wendy's, it was almost $8, yet I could get a cheeseburger, nuggets, fries, and a soda for only $4. That brings me to another problem. Walk into McDonald's and you get hit with that sweet, sweet french fry smell, and I had to get a salad. Would I recommend this to anyone? Nope, unless you're stuck on the road with no other options. Though there was a bright spot: breakfast at Subway. They have these egg-white-and-cheese sandwiches, which I got covered in spinach and peppers. And let me tell you, it was good. But after all this, I just want a cheeseburger.

The Incredible Story of The PayPal Mafia

The Incredible Story of The PayPal Mafia

Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/neoscribe Like all great origin stories, The PayPal Mafia is an origin story that deserves to be told and retold. From Social Media to the auto and aerospace industries, the impact of the PayPal Mafia is amazing, serving as the launching point for six members to become billionaires. The story of PayPal actually begins with palm pilots. If you are too young to remember these, Palm Pilots was a specific brand of a device called a personal digital assistant, or PDAs. Before the smart phone era, PDAs were cutting edge handheld PCs with the ability to connect to the internet, they were truly awesome for the time and were getting popular by the late 1990’s. And it was in 1998, Peter Thiel and Max Levchin decided to develop technology to allow person to person payments via the use of PDAs, namely Palm Pilots. You see, back in those days, sending money to someone was inconvenient compared to today. You were limited to cash or writing a check, and if you were far apart you would have to send it through the mail. Over the years, credit and debit card infrastructure expanded but they were limited to merchants. So, with Thiel and Levchin’s idea, people could beam money from one another through an app on their palm pilots essentially creating a digital wallet. Thiel graduated from Stanford and worked as a lawyer and former derivatives trader in New York before he moved back to SF to start a hedge fund. Upon his return, Thiel delivered a guest lecture and that’s where he met Levchin. Levchin’s migrated from the Soviet Union to Chicago when he was 16 in 1991. He went on to the University of Illinois where he studied to become a computer scientist. After college, he founded an automated marketing software company called NetMeridian which he ended up selling to Microsoft. Musk was a child prodigy from South Africa, he taught himself how to code around 10 years old and at 12 he developed a video game called Blastar and sold the code for $500 which is around $1300 today. By February 1999, at the age of 27, he sold his first start up Zip2 to Compact for $307 which he received $22 million. And a month later Musk and his friend and business partner Greg Kouri founded X.com, the first, online bank. SOURCES: **Books: The PayPal Wars by Eric M. Why Do We Boil Lobsters Alive?

Why Do We Boil Lobsters Alive?

Whenever you enter a restaurant, you're putting your health in someone else's hands. Thousands of people get sick from food poisoning each year. But thankfully chefs can take steps to minimize the risk. One of those ways? Boiling lobsters alive. Turns out, those unusual tanks of live lobsters in restaurants isn't just there so you can have a plate of fresh lobster. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is a transcript of the video: If you walked into a kitchen and saw a pig cooked alive on the stove, you’d probably be horrified and lose your appetite. Yet, this is how millions of lobsters meet their fate in American kitchens each year. Some people even relish choosing which lobster’s time is up at restaurants or markets across the country. But is a lobster really any different from other animals we eat? Why do we boil lobsters alive? And why do places even sell live lobsters? Turns out, this seemingly barbaric way of cooking lobsters could actually save your life. Humans were boiling lobsters alive thousands of years ago. The first recorded case came from recipes attributed to the famous Roman Cook Caelius Apicius in the first century. American chefs later adopted the process by 1880, when they discovered that the dish looks and tastes better when the animal is boiled alive. It wasn’t until later that we realized this also reduces the risk of severe food poisoning. That’s all because of these little guys. They’re a type of Vibrio bacteria. And they thrive on the decaying flesh of lobsters and other shellfish. If a lobster dies, you only have a few hours before these bacteria show up to the party. And once they’re in, it’s nearly impossible to get rid of them. Even cooking the lobster meat won’t kill all of the bacteria. So it’s safer to just keep the animal alive right up until you serve it. If Vibrio bacteria end up in your system, it’s not pretty. You can experience abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and sometimes even death. Luckily, there’s a pretty good way to tell if that meat has gone bad. Just smell it. You can easily smell the ammonia that is released when the body starts to decompose. So boiling lobsters alive save us from a world of pain, but what about the lobsters? For starters, lobsters don't scream when you boil them. In fact, they lack lungs and don’t even have the proper biological equipment to form a scream. What you hear is air and steam escaping from the shells of their simmering suppers. In any case - we don't do this to chickens or pigs because it’s pretty obvious that they can feel pain. For lobsters, it’s less clear if their primitive nervous systems and brains even know what pain is. When a lobster thrashes around in the pot does that mean it’s in agony? Or is it simply a reflex response to the boiling water, but not a conscious action? No one really knows, so more research is needed. Regardless, some say this uncertainty is exactly why we should think twice. Anil Seth: With lobsters, we just don't know if they can feel pain. There’s a thing in ethics that we call the Precautionary Principle, when not knowing we should err on the side of caution. If there is the potential for something to have the ability to suffer, we should treat that possibility very seriously. So boiling lobsters, not a very good idea. New Zealand and Switzerland certainly agree. They’ve gone so far as to make it illegal to boil lobsters alive. Should America follow suit?

How I Made My Own iPhone - in China

How I Made My Own iPhone - in China

I built a like-new(but really refurbished) iPhone 6S 16GB entirely from parts I bought in the public cell phone parts markets in Huaqiangbei. And it works! How much did it cost? Answer here: https://youtu.be/-KucQDXnKws I've been fascinated by the cell phone parts markets in Shenzhen, China for a while. I'd walked through them a bunch of times, but I still didn't understand basic things, like how they were organized or who was buying all these parts and what they were doing with them. So when someone mentioned they wondered if you could build a working smartphone from parts in the markets, I jumped at the chance to really dive in and understand how everything works. Well, I sat on it for nine months, and then I dove in. 20 Things Proving That Japan Lives In 3018

What's so special about Japan? 🇯🇵 Anyone who visits Japan will be amazed by something, like robots working as hotel staff or vending machines on every corner! 😮 We’ve collected 20 outstanding innovations proving that Japan must be living in 3018! TIMESTAMPS: Super toilets 0:50 Rice paddy art 1:27 Grooming dogs into cubes 2:07 Hello Kitty melon 2:38 Shoes designed like a bullet train 3:06 Expectations meet reality in Japan 3:36 Ice cream in a fish-shaped cone 4:08 Black fries 4:38 Portable ashtrays 4:55 Braille on beer cans 5:20 The most organized luggage pickup 5:40 Glow-in-the-dark tattoos 6:04 Park-and-Lock umbrella 6:30 Unattended produce stands 6:50 The country of vending machines 7:14 Multi-level parking lots 7:48 Capsule hotels 8:16 Seagaia Ocean Dome 8:44 Robot-run hotel 9:09 Smart bra 9:41 #smarbra #japandesign #japaneeseinvention Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Toilets in Japan, like their gadgets, are technologically advanced and user-friendly. Even the simpler ones still have built-in sinks on the tank and heated seats. - The Japanese love everything that’s cute (or “kawaii” as they call it), like cats and anime characters with their large, adorable eyes. As for their pooches, the latest craze in Japan is to groom their dogs into perfectly trimmed cubes. - High speed trains in Japan are designed like, well, a bullet, hence the name! These things can go up to 198 miles per hour and are known for their punctuality, comfort, safety, and efficiency. - In Japan, they consider food preparation an art. A classic example is the glass display that showcases a restaurant’s dishes. In Japan, when you order food, it’s the same as what’s advertised! - Most of us like our fries hot, crisp, and…black?! Nope, these charcoal-black fries aren’t burnt; they’re special fries made from a spicy black potato that you can buy at a café & bar in Kyoto. - Inclusive Japanese brewers stamp the word “beer” in Braille on top of their cans, and they do it entirely out of sheer concern! - Tattooing is a form of art in its own right, but Japan gave it an exciting twist. Known as “blacklight tattoos” or “UV tattoos,” this awesome ink uses a UV reactive fluoresce dye and comes to life when under UV light. - “Mujin hanbai” or “unmanned stores” are a common site at roadsides in Japan. They’re a nice way for farmers to get rid of extra stock yet still make a nice coin for it. - Japan is almost the same size as California, so they have to utilize the limited space they have. One of their solutions is intelligent parking systems started in 1965 by the Japan Parking System Manufacturers Association. - If you wanna go to the beach but hate getting sunburned, then The Seagaia Ocean Dome is your answer for an unforgettable summer getaway. This is one of the world’s largest indoor waterparks and artificial beaches. - “Smart bra” “knows” what its wearer feels and opens only when a woman is with someone she’s really into. Steve Jobs Fired Me 5 Times And I Still Loved Working With Him

Andy Cunningham helped launch Apple's original Macintosh. She is the founder and president of Cunningham Collective and author of the book "Get to Aha!: Discover Your Positioning DNA and Dominate Your Competition." I’m Andy Cunningham and I run a marketing consulting company called Cunningham Collective and I've just written a book about positioning, which is a big practice in the marketing field. It's called "Get to Aha!" The first time Steve fired me was actually probably the most traumatic because I thought it was going to be the last time I would ever work with him and he called me into his office, or into a conference room I should say, and his CFO was sitting there and he looked at me and he said, "I'm going to cut off my contract with you. I think the work you're doing is terrible and we’re just going to stop it right now so that's it, you're fired." And of course I was taken– you know I was emotional. I was much younger. I didn't cry but I was on the verge of it and I didn't really know what to do so I said, "Okay, well you know you owe me $35,000 and so I’ll arrange you know for you to—" he goes, "I'm not going to pay you that because your work wasn't worth it." And I was just kind of taken aback so I left the room and I called my mentor who is a man named Regis McKenna and Regis said to me, "Well, if you want to get paid by Steve Jobs you’re going to have to have something over him." And I said, "I don't have anything over Steve Jobs, you know that Regis. And he said, "No, you do." And I said, "What is that?" He goes, "In your relationships with the business press." And I said, "Oh I get it." So I went back and I got in a meeting with Steve because I was friendly with his CFO— she got me a meeting. I walked in there to the meeting, which he took, which was amazing, and I said, "Steve you owe me $35,000. I need that money. I have a start-up company. I need to make payroll and I want you to give me a check for what you owe me." And he said, "I'm not going to do that." And I said, I said, "You have to do that," and he said, "Why?" And I said, "Well, just so you know Steve I get about 30 or 40 phone calls a week from the business press that we've made relationships over the last couple of years asking me what kind of a guy you are to work with and I currently tell them very nice things." And he wrote me a check immediately and then he hired me back. Steve got angry with everybody that worked with him. He was very impatient. He had a vision of what it was that you were supposed to be accomplishing and if you didn't do it fast enough or you didn't do it right enough, he definitely got angry. He threw things at people, nothing heavy, but he threw wads of paper at people, swore at people, criticized their clothing. He did all those things. So what it did to certain people is it caused us to push even harder and try to be even better, but for some people it destroyed them. Fortunately for me, I was one of the first types and I am forever grateful to him actually for the experience because now I am so much better at what I do than I would have been without him.

The US’s other Debt Crisis - VisualPolitik EN

The US economy is going through a fabulous moment. After 10 years of uninterrupted economic growth, the great American engine is working at full speed: industrial production, the SP 500 and exports are at record highs while unemployment is at its lowest level in 20 years. However, the US economy has another face of which we’ve already talked about here in VisualPolitik: the public debt and the federal government deficit are out of control. However, the federal government isn’t the only debt and credit addict. In this video, we’ll talk about the other debt crisis that looms over the American giant. The Terrifying Truth About Avocados

While junk food and meat are often painted in a very negative light by the booming healthy food industry, fruits vegetables and salat are praised for being natural and good for the environment. CEO Proved His Bulletproof Cars Work By Sitting Inside One And Taking Shots From An AK-47

Texas Armoring Corporation produces a range of armoured passenger vehicles, they can even upgrade your current car. To fit the armouring they take each car apart piece by piece, then cover each area in military grade armor. The fuel tank is coated in ballistic nylon and many other parts are wrapped in steel. Special run-flat tires are fitted and the vehicle is reassembled. They offer different levels of protection, the cheapest costing around £46,000, which would stop a handgun bullet. The top level could cost you over £360,000, and would include a siren, strobe lights, electroshock door handles and even a smoke screen.
