How to Expand Your Wireless Range Using an Old Router

How to Expand Your Wireless Range Using an Old Router

Check out this video to learn how to configure an old router to expand the wireless in your home, garage, pole barn, or greenhouse. I have used this process for many years both professionally and in my own home. This is a great use for that older router that you may have replaced with a new one or picked up from a garage sale or resale shop. Routers have become almost disposable after a few years so they come cheap. The newer routers will offer a better wireless extension and also better security so if you can find one that is at least 2007 or newer that is preferred. Using an old router to expand your network is a cheap and easy way to at least double the wireless range in your home. It is also a great way to get wireless to outbuildings or other areas that are outside of your home's wireless signal. This method does require that you have an Ethernet cable run from your main wireless router in your home to the location where you would like to setup the second router (access point). In our home I have one wireless access point configured on each floor and staggered from one end of the home to the other. This means that no matter where I ma in the house I can always connect to a nearby access point and have full signal strength. No buffering, no lag, and in most cases speeds as fast as a wired Ethernet connection. Here are the basic steps to follow but I would recommend watching the accompanying video to fully understand the process. 1. Reset router to factory default settings 2. Take note of your current network configuration (192.168.1.X 3. Create a new ip address for the access point 192.168.1.220 (example) 4. plug a computer into the newly reset router 5. log into the router using the default ip - normally 192.168.1.1 6. Configure the wireless network name and security 7. Turn off DHCP (take away the router's ability to assign ip addresses) 8. Configure the router to the previously picked ip address - 192.168.1.220 (example) 9. Connect the router to an Ethernet cable coming from your main router. Tip - Do not use the "WAN" port at all on this new access point. Now I know that someone is going to say it so I will answer this question up front. Yes, you can just plug the router into your existing setup using the WAN port on the second router without changing any settings on the router. This will work in most cases however you are setting yourself up for problems down the road as this is not the correct way to configure a second wireless router on an existing network. This is what is called double NAT or network address translation and is like having a double firewall. This will not allow any computers connected to the secondary router to communicate with wireless printers, other computers, will block many gaming sites, vpn's and other connections. Although it is easier and may work for basic internet browsing it will be slower and will cause other issues down the road. TP-LINK TL-WA860RE N300 AC-Passthrough WiFi Range Extender Review

TP-LINK TL-WA860RE N300 AC-Passthrough WiFi Range Extender Review

I have to admit that the TP-Link TL-WA86ORE N300 AC-Passthrough WiFi Range Extender is one cool little gadget that works exactly as advertised. Essentially what you do is plug it into a room in your home that does not get very good existing WiFi signal and it extends and boosts the strength of the signal in that area. It can also be used in areas that are hard to install physical internet wires, could save money from installation, and frankly will save you a lot of hassle. It is relatively easy to use and comes with its own short Ethernet cable for easy hook up to any existing WiFi. It has two antennas that are able to move for increasing strength (which did not seem to be an issue for me). It come with a small approximately 10 page booklet "easy instruction guide" but install is pretty simple, all you have to do is connect the unit via Ethernet cable to your router then push the "lock" button on the device to lock in your WiFi signal for later use. After that you simply plug in to a wall socket in an area with poor signal. The indicator lights will blink for a few moments before turning green letting you know that the Extender is on and ready for use. I used this device in my mother-in-law unit which got terrible strength and it took me from 2 bars to 100%! I also got next to no WiFi signal in my garage (directly under my mother-in-law unit) and now I get much better reception there as well. A few of the other things that are great about this device are that they added a extra outlet right on the outside of the model so that even while in use it does not take away outlet space. Also the Ethernet port on the bottom (which is used for set-up) can also be used. This came in very handy for me especially because it allowed me to hook up cable TV in my mother-in-law unit without having to have the building wired. All I had to do was hook the cable box up to the Ethernet port on the WiFi range extender. Awesome! Not something I was necessarily wanting it for but definitely an added bonus. I would guess that if you wanted to hook up older computers that do not use WiFi signals in different rooms of your home this may possibly work for that as well. On a scale of 1-10 I would give this product an 11! I was very impressed and would recommend to anyone.

Winegard ConnecT 2.0 - WiFi Extender & 4G Modem: First Look and Product Overview

Winegard has a great reputation as the leading provider of both satellite and over-the-air TV antennas designed for RV use. But despite some initial excitement, we ended up being underwhelmed by Winegard's 2016 entry into the RV internet gear market. The original Winegard ConnecT was expensive, the cellular version was tied to a very limited and pricey data plan, and the physical unit was an ungainly beast that looked like an ugly inverted stool on your RV roof - seemingly destined for a inevitable disastrous encounter with a tree branch. Winegard must have been paying attention. Last November Winegard announced a completely redesigned ConnecT 2.0 model - and they've let us know that the new model has started shipping this week. WiFi Radiation - Dangers of WiFi - See It Measured - How To Remediate WiFi Radiation

PLEASE SUPPORT my EMF Safety Zone Channel! - EMF Meters, Consulting, Resources: https://emf-protection.us - eBay store for EMF meters and related products at the lowest prices: http://www.ebaystores.com/healthyjoyfulsustainableliving Join me on Twitter for educational updates! https://twitter.com/EMFSafetyZone / @EMFSafetyZone Although this video was uploaded in 2012, don't even think it is not still perfectly valid and important at this time! It is even more valid considering all the clinical research proving the dangers of wireless radiation! This video provides a simple, yet profound lesson. The radio frequency radiation being transmitted from your wireless router or modem is extremely toxic and detrimental to your health. Notice how high the measurements are on the RF meter! Most of us are living and working in this type of RF radiation exposure every single day and night. The fix, or remediation is simple. Plug your modem or router into your computer using an Ethernet connection (hardwire), and "disable" the wireless function on your modem or router. This is very important for the health and safety of all those in your home or office. If you need to use the wireless function, then turn it on for a short time, do your task or watch your movie, then disable it once again. Never leave your wireless internet on all night as it will cause sleep disturbances which lead to even worse health issues. The fix is simple! Ethernet cord and disable the wireless function. And no, that is not a cell phone on my desk in the charger, it is an iPod. My cell phone sits in my car. I don't even know my cell number and I make about 2 to 3 calls a month on it, if that many.

WiFi Range Extender - WiFi Booster explained - Which is the best?

Here is the WiFi extender that I recommend https://amzn.to/2N6pSH3 What is a WiFi extender - WiFi booster? A wifi extender is what extends the range of a wireless signal from a wifi router. It acts like a bridge between a wifi router and a wifi device, that is outside the range of a wifi router. It's also known as a wifi booster. NETGEAR WiFi AC1200 Range Extender (EX6200)

Converting Cheap Router to Wireless AP Instructions

Converting Cheap Router to Wireless AP Instructions

Extend your WiFi network's range by adding a cheap second wireless router and configuring as a wireless AP (Access Point) to boost your existing network distance. 1, Disable the DHCP Server. This will turn off routing capability of AP. 2. Assign an IP address within main router's subnet but outside the DHCP range (i.e. 192.168.1.2). 3. Assign different wireless channel (1, 6 or 11 only) with same SSID and password. 4. Connect network cable and any other wired computers to LAN port only. Do not use WAN port. In this tutorial I have a DD-WRT firmware on a Linksys (Cisco) WRT54G v8.0 router. Using a cheap router is better than buying a dedicated wireless access point as you save money and get more capability (has built in 4-port switch hub). For maximum coverage and range you can add a third wireless AP. NOTE: I added annotations to video to fill in gaps and errors. If you cannot see the annotation try different web browser as they will help.

Netgear N300 WiFi Range Extender

Netgear N300 WiFi Range Extender

Nobody likes WiFi dead spot around the home as every device needs to be connected these days. One way of preventing this is with a device like Netgear's WiFi Range Extender which boosts your current WiFi setup filling in the gaps. The N300 is plugs in to a mains socket and works by pairing up with your current WiFi and then repeating the signal out as a new WiFi zone, so you could place it on the edge of your coverage and then it will broadcast the signal further out. What it doesn't do is create a separate network so you can connect to the extended network and still browse devices and services on your current network which is important if you are using things like DLNA. A nice feature is that there is an Ethernet port on it so you can use it as a wireless adapter for devices that don't have WiFi. It supports 802.11.n and should work with any WiFi router. Configuring is straight forward you either you WPS or via a web browser, all it needs to know is your current network's password. It's a simple device that does exactly what you expect. The actual range you get is very much dependent on the type of building you are in, if you have dead spot in your house or office this is well worth looking at for £29.99 Have a look at this video for how it works in practice.

Wireless-n WiFi Repeater / WiFi Extender - WiFi Repeater router, Setup & Review - No Name

Wireless-n WiFi Repeater / WiFi Extender - WiFi Repeater router, Setup & Review - No Name

In this video see a No Name / Brandless Wireless-N WiFi repeater and/or WiFi Range Extender setup, repeater configuration and review. I bought this off of ebay for $12.00. See me do a WiFi repeater installation and see how to setup a WiFi extender for a WiFi booster of your existing WLAN network. Watch how to setup Wireless-n WiFi repeater and have a wireless amplifier extender pushing your signal out another 30 to 50 feet from your existing wireless router. It's not hard for anyone to learn how to install WiFi extender and get WiFi repeater setup instructions simply by viewing my video in just a few minutes. It's not hard to figure out where to place WiFi extender after you watch my how-to video. Get more range for your WLAN network at home and office with a wireless range extender. This wireless-N WiFi repeater extended my WiFi Netgear router sigal further than I expected it to do. I was able to get a consistent wireless signal outside on my porch and patio using my tablet, mobile phone and laptop. Is this WiFi repeater going to last for the long run? I don't know. It was made in China but just about everything is today. So for $12 why not give it a try. Cheaper than paying $79 plus tax at your local Walmart or Office Depot with a brand name on it that was also made in China! So far I've been using this for a few days and it has work good as a WiFi router range extender or wifi range router repeater extender booster if you like to use that long phrase instead. For me it's just a WiFi repeater that repeats my fair to good signal for a longer distance. Like on the other end of my house or even in my neighbors house. Yep for real!. Some important things to remember are: 1) If your WiFi repeater is to close to your main router, they will compete against each other's signal since they are both on the same WiFi channel, 1,6, or 11. So you must distance the WiFi extender far enough away to so the channels don't overlap each other. This will only slow down your LAN/WLAN. Hence, defeating your reason for installing a Wireless-n WiFi repeater to begin with! 2) I believe in surge protectors. Put your wireless repeater on one. Protect it against power outages and AC surges. You might just call it network or electronic insurance, just like car insurance or auto insurance for your box. I know it was only $12.00 but you do want it to last for a while, right? Don't let the power company kill your new WiFi repeater extender during the night or day when you are not home. 3) Set up can be done by a laptop, computer desktop/tower, tablet or cell phone with WiFi connectivity with an Internet Browser. But it can also be done by a hard wired RJ45 LAN cable too. See my last note for instructions on how to use a RJ45 cable for setup. BTW: Don't allow yourself into thinking that this is a WiFi router. A WiFi repeater router, a network WiFi repeater extender are two entirely different dogs. A router routes internet information and the other extends and/or repeats the information on a network that a router routes from the Internet out onto your network. Think of this device more as a WiFi range extender. Some times it's also refer to as a router range extender, a repeater extender, wifi booster extender or wireless router extender. But they all just repeat your wireless signal halfway between your wifi router and where you want to set up shop. How to Expand Your Wireless Range across your house or yard using this cheap made in China no name no brand Wireless repeater for all your computer devices including cell phones. Steps for Hard Wired Setup & Hook-up: Here's how to go about setting it up, if you don't have a laptop or computer connected via WiFi, in other words, your computer is connected by way of a hard wired RJ45 LAN cable. Keep in mind that the following procedure is based on you having at least a WiFi router & modem plus the repeater unit: 1) Plug the WiFi Repeater/Extender into a AC wall socket and wait a minute or two. 2) Than connect your computer with the WiFi Repeater by using the enclosed RJ45 LAN cable (you will need to get one if your unit did not come with a RJ45 LAN cat5/6 cable) one end plugs into the RJ45 port on the left side of the repeater and the other end goes into your RJ45 port on your computer. 3) To complete the setup, follow my video steps starting at opening up a web browser and type 192.168.10.1 One more last thing. This may not necessary be the best wireless range extender but it's one of the lowest price repeaters I've ever come across that actually works GREAT. Some New Information as of 01/14/2017 The other day while surfing the around the internet I found something interesting over at Walmart.com. It seems that even Walmart is getting in on the act. I just Googled wifi repeater walmart or wifi extender walmart, and sure enough they are selling something very similar to the wifi Extender/Repeater seen in my video review that I bought off eBay. Check it out if you are curious.

It allows a router's wireless network to be expanded using multiple access points without the need for a wire to connect them, as is traditionally required. 1 = connect your 2nd router or login or go to admin panel of your 2nd router. 2= go to wireless. 3= wireless setting. 4= select channel (must be 1st and 2nd rouer same channel number). 5= Enable WDS Bridging. 6=click survey. 7= select your 1st router wifi network connect. 8=give 1st router password. How to use a spare router as a range booster for your Wifi Network

How to use a spare router as a range booster for your Wifi Network

I have made an updated version of this video that is more clear to understand. See it here: https://youtu.be/vMXSH4SRIuA Please note that this won't work for all routers. It will work on most Linksys routers, which, in my opinion, are the best you can get. This video will show you how to use your older wireless router in conjunction with your new router (via a long ethernet cord to another part of your house) to boost your network's wireless signal throughout your house. Note: You will have to end up with 2 different wireless networks BUT they are both on the same internet network for you to use for internet access. You will need to connect them via a long Ethernet cable from a client port on the first one to a client port on the second router. The 2nd router's DHCP server will need to be turned off as the first router will be assigning local IP addresses and the second router MUST have the option to change from "gateway" to "router", or a similar option, for this to work. On a standard linksys admin or configuration page, it is under "advanced routing". PS: I'm sorry about the quality of this video/details left out. I put it together really fast. Some details are in the annotations. I also didn't expect this to get this many views.
