Hushabye - The Mystics

Hushabye - The Mystics

The Mystics are a singing group which began in Brooklyn, New York, USA in the late 1950s. The group was known as The Overons, a quintet that, when signed to Laurie Records, consisted of Phil Cracolici (b. 1937, lead), Albee Cracolici (b. 1936, baritone), George Galfo (b. 1939, second tenor), Bob Ferrante (b. 1936, first tenor), and Al Contrera (b. 1940, bass). Under the direction of their manager, Jim Gribble, The Overons became The Mystics when each group member wrote a name they liked on a slip of paper, placed the papers in a hat and Al Contrera's choice was drawn.

Paul Whiteman, Bing Crosby - Make Believe (1928)

Make Believe Words by: Oscar Hammerstein II, music by Jerome Kern From the Broadway Musical "Showboat" Paul Whiteman Orchestra, Bing Crosby, vocal Recorded Jan. 27, 1928 Paul Whiteman was an important bandleader starting in 1919 and was a leader in development and popularization of dance music in the 1920s. His title, "King of Jazz," was somewhat misleading, but it was semi-jazz for the general public, though he gave many jazzmen hot solo spots. Bing Crosby was born May 3, 1903 in Tacoma, Washington, grew up in Spokane and attended Gonzaga University. He teamed up with Al Rinker as a novelty singing dou, and then was hired by Paul Whiteman in late 1926. Harry Barris joined the duo and they formed the trio known as the Rhythm Boys. In 1930 the trio joined Gus Arnheim at Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles and shortly after, Bing launched his career as a single. Show Boat opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 27, 1927 with Norma Terris as "Magnolia", Howard Marsh as "Gaylord" and Helen Morgan as "Julie." It ran for 572 performances. It has been revived numerous times--most successfully by Hal Prince in 1994--and spawned several film versions including the 1936 film with Irene Dunne and the 1951 version with Ava Gardner and Howard Keel.

Crosby's trademark warm bass-baritone voice made him the best-selling recording artist of the 20th century, having sold over one billion records, tapes, compact discs and digital downloads around the world. The first multimedia star, from 1931 to 1954 Crosby was a leader in record sales, radio ratings, and motion picture grosses. His early career coincided with technical recording innovations such as the microphone. This allowed him to develop a laid-back, intimate singing style that influenced many of the popular male singers who followed him, including Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes, and Dean Martin. Yank magazine said that he was the person who had done the most for American soldiers' morale during World War II. In 1948, American polls declared him the "most admired man alive", ahead of Jackie Robinson and Pope Pius XII. Also in 1948, Music Digest estimated that his recordings filled more than half of the 80,000 weekly hours allocated to recorded radio music. Crosby won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Father Chuck O'Malley in the 1944 motion picture Going My Way and was nominated for his reprise of the role in The Bells of St. Mary's opposite Ingrid Bergman the next year, becoming the first of six actors to be nominated twice for playing the same character. In 1963, Crosby received the first Grammy Global Achievement Award. He is one of 33 people to have three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in the categories of motion pictures, radio, and audio recording. Crosby influenced the development of the postwar recording industry. He became the first performer to pre-record his radio shows and master his commercial recordings onto magnetic tape. Through the medium of recording, he constructed his radio programs with the same directorial tools and craftsmanship (editing, retaking, rehearsal, time shifting) used in motion picture production, a practice that became an industry standard. In addition to his work with early tape recording, he helped to finance the development of videotape, bought television stations, bred racehorses, and co-owned the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. On October 14, 1977, he sustained and died from a heart attack while playing golf in Alcobendas, Spain. A plaque was placed at the golf course in his memory. 1950 HITS ARCHIVE: Play A Simple Melody - Bing & Gary Crosby

Play A Simple Melody (Berlin) by Gary Crosby and Friend, with Matty Matlock's All-Stars (CD audio source) This happy tune dates back to the early songwriting years of Irving Berlin and his 1914 score for the Broadway musical "Watch Your Step," which starred famed dancing couple Vernon and Irene Castle. I'm also posting a vintage 1916 track of "Simple Melody" performed by early 20th century recording artists Billy Murray and Elsie Baker. Both this and the "Sam's Song" flip (also posted) were strong top-5 hits for Gary Crosby "and Friend," making it an easy ride to the million-sales mark--the final 'gold record' that Bing recorded for his long-time Decca label. Bing Crosby & The Andrew Sisters - 12 Days Of Christmas (Decca Records 1951)

Bing Crosby & The Andrew Sisters - 12 Days Of Christmas (Decca Records 1951)

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas carol that enumerates a series of increasingly grand gifts given on each of the twelve days of Christmas. Although first published in England in 1780, textual evidence may indicate the song is French in origin. The twelve days in the song are the twelve days starting Christmas day, or in some traditions, the day after Christmas (December 26) (Boxing Day or St. Stephen's Day, as being the feast day of St. Stephen Protomartyr) to the day before Epiphany, or the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6, or the Twelfth Day). Twelfth Night is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "the evening of the fifth of January, preceding Twelfth Day, the eve of the Epiphany, formerly the last day of the Christmas festivities and observed as a time of merrymaking." Although the specific origins of the chant are not known, it possibly began as a Twelfth Night "memories-and-forfeits" game, in which a leader recited a verse, each of the players repeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so on until one of the players made a mistake, with the player who erred having to pay a penalty, such as offering up a kiss or a sweet. This is how the game is offered up in its earliest known printed version, in the children's book Mirth without Mischief (c. 1780) published in England, which 100 years later Lady Gomme, a collector of folktales and rhymes, described playing every Twelfth Day night before eating mince pies and twelfth cake. The song apparently is older than the printed version, though it is not known how much older. Textual evidence indicates that the song was not English in origin, but French, though it is considered an English carol. Three French versions of the song are known. If the "partridge in a pear tree" of the English version is to be taken literally, then it seems as if the chant comes from France, since the red-legged (or French) partridge, which perches in trees more frequently than the native common (or grey) partridge, was not successfully introduced into England until about 1770. The song was imported to the United States in 1910 by Emily Brown, of the Downer Teacher's College in Milwaukee, WI, who had encountered the song in an English music store sometime before. The earliest well-known version of the music of the song was recorded by English scholar James O. Halliwell in 1842, and he published a version in 4th edition The Nursery Rhymes of England (1846), collected principally from 'oral tradition'. In the early 20th century, English composer Frederic Austin wrote an arrangement in which he added his melody from "Five gold rings" onwards, which has since become standard. On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: A Partridge in a Pear Tree On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the sixth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the seventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 7 Swans a Swimming, 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the eighth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 8 Maids a Milking, 7 Swans a Swimming, 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the ninth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 9 Ladies Dancing, 8 Maids a Milking, 7 Swans a Swimming, 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the tenth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 10 Lords a Leaping, 9 Ladies Dancing, 8 Maids a Milking, 7 Swans a Swimming, 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 11 Pipers Piping, 10 Lords a Leaping, 9 Ladies Dancing, 8 Maids a Milking, 7 Swans a Swimming, 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 12 Drummers Drumming, 11 Pipers Piping, 10 Lords a Leaping, 9 Ladies Dancing, 8 Maids a Milking, 7 Swans a Swimming, 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

Bing Crosby & Gary Crosby - Sam's Song

Father and son join forces on the sprightly little number called "Sam's Song". I believe that the original issue of this record listed "Gary Crosby (And Friend)" on the label. Gary made a few recordings on his own in the 1950s (one album on the Verve label) but had nowhere near the success of his iconic Dad in the recording studios! Bing would have been a tough act to follow for ANY son with show business aspirations! Uploaded with Free Video Converter from Freemake http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

Till We Meet Again (Bing Crosby & Patti Page)

Bing sang this rare duet with Patti Page in 1952. In the following year (i.e. 1953), Patti Page also sang the same song as a solo version. I write the lyrics below: Smile the while you kiss me said adieu, When the clouds roll by I' ll come to you. Then the sky will seem more blue, Down in lovers lane my dearie. Wedding bells will ring so merrily, Every tear will be a memory. Wait and pray each night for me, Till we meet again.

The original version was No. 1 on the US charts for 11 weeks on it's original release.
