How the oceans can clean themselves: Boyan Slat at TEDxDelft

18-year-old Boyan Slat combines environmentalism, entrepreneurism and technology to tackle global issues of sustainability. After diving in Greece, and coming across more plastic bags than fish, he wondered; "why can't we clean this up?" While still being on secondary school, he then decided to dedicate half a year of research to understand plastic pollution and the problems associated with cleaning it up. This ultimately led to his passive clean-up concept, which he presented at TEDxDelft 2012. Working to prove the feasibility of his concept, Boyan Slat currently gives lead to a team of approximately 50 people, and temporarily quit his Aerospace Engineering study to completely focus his efforts on The Ocean Cleanup. The progress of The Ocean Cleanup can be followed through www.theoceancleanup.com, www.facebook.com/TheOceanCleanup, as well as www.twitter.com/TheOceanCleanup. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Proof Faster than Light Black Budget Antigravity Technology is Real

Based on eye-witness accounts and insider information, This video takes the audience through a series of revelations as to how remarkable breakthrough technology, may have been back-engineered from recovered or captured off-world vehicles, enabled aerospace corporations to create a special access only, secret space program and develop a break-away civilization with its own goals and agenda. We are talking about Special Access Programs (SAP). From these we have unacknowledged and waived SAPs. These programs do not exist publicly, but they do indeed exist. They are better known as ‘deep black programs. Some of these vehicles are capable of fluing at mach 17 and performing manoeuvres that seem impossible.

What Comes After James Webb and WFIRST? Four Amazing Future Space Telescopes

The Hubble Space Telescope has been in space for 28 years, producing some of the most beautiful and scientifically important images of the cosmos that humanity has ever taken. But let’s face it, Hubble is getting old, and it probably won’t be with us for too much longer. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is in the final stages of testing, and WFIRST is waiting in the wings. You’ll be glad to know there are even more space telescopes in the works, a set of four powerful instruments in design right now, which will be part of the next Decadal Survey, and helping to answer the most fundamental questions about the cosmos. One thing that you have to remember from your science classes is that gases expand and contract very rapidly indeed, making this sort of engine practical. Stirling engines are not very powerful nor do they have great power to weight ratios. I know of one annual boat race that takes place in England on a river using stirling engines, and it is somewhat sedate. This Sea-Craft Looks Like A Plane, Has A Car's Engine, And Docks Like A Boat

The AirFish-8 is an alternative method of sea transportation, combining the technologies of aviation and marine craft.  Company Wigetworks have created AirFish-8, a boat/plane hybrid that glides on water. Due to the machines unique structure, it is able to utilise what is known as the "Wing in Ground Effect." This is when an aircraft is able to produce additional lift when flying near the ground. AirFish-8 has a V8 car engine, which runs on unleaded petrol and can travel up to 121 mph; that's three times faster than typical marine craft.  The sea-craft is currently still in a trial phase but the company hope to have it fully operational by mid-2018. _________________________________________ Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TWITTER: https://twitter.com/techinsider INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/

Young genius’ about to start world’s largest ocean cleanup

Young genius’ about to start world’s largest ocean cleanup

Young genius’ about to start world’s largest ocean cleanup SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR MORE CONTAGIOUSLY INSPIRING STORIES: http://bit.ly/BrightVibesSubscribe In september launches the largest endeavor to help rid our oceans of 5 trillion pieces of plastic, lead by the dutch 24 years old inventor Boyan Slat. Aged 16, when diving in greece, Boyan saw more plastic than fish in the sea. Ever since, he has dedicated his life to the ocean cleanup. Ocean currents concentrate plastic in five areas in the world: a.k.a. the world’s "Ocean Garbage Patches". The Ocean Clean Up aims to rid our oceans of plastic, starting with the largest garbage patch, located between Hawaii and California. Which is estimated to contain 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic. Here, the Ocean Clean Up will deploy its first technological solution to this growing problem. The Ocean Clean Up system creates a coastline where there are none. This artificial coastline captures the plastic after which the plastic gets taken out. The system consists of a 600-meter-long floater that sits at the surface of the water… And a tapered 3-meter-deep skirt attached below. The floater provides buoyancy to the system and prevents plastic from flowing over it, while the skirt stops debris from escaping underneath. As the impenetrable skirt creates a downward flow, marine life can safely pass beneath it. Here’s how the system captures the plastic using only natural oceanic forces. Because of wind and waves, the system moves faster than the plastic, allowing the plastic to be captured. Thanks to the shape of the skirt and the currents, the system naturally adopts in a U-shape. As it’s free floating, it automatically drifts to the areas with the highest plastic concentration and it’s fitted with solar powered lights, anti-collision systems, cameras, sensors and satellite antennas. The system actively communicates its position at all times and continuously gathers performance data. Periodically a support vessel comes by to take out the concentrated plastic, like a garbage truck of the ocean. The plastic is then transported to land, recycled and made into durable products. It is absolutely vital to clean up the large debris as soon as possible. The total mass of the pacific garbage patch is 80,000 tons. We see that about 92% isn’t micro plastic, but it’s large. Those 8% of plastic that are already microplastics, they used to be large objects as well. But because of uv lights it breaks down into these smaller and smaller pieces, becoming harder to clean up. That’s why it’s so important the we are cleaning up the garbage patch. Their models indicate that a full-scale system roll-out could clean up 50% of the great pacific garbage patch in 5 years. Combining the cleanup with source reduction on land paves the road towards a plastic free ocean by 2050. Comment #yes and share if you agree we must take better care of our planet Follow the launch on september 8 2018 of the first deployment live on theoceancleanup.com ----- Visit BrightVibes.com for more contagiously inspiring stories http://brightvibes.com Other ways to connect with us… FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/brightvibes TWITTER: https://twitter.com/brightvibes_com INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/brightvibesmedia

The LED Traffic Light and the Danger of "But Sometimes!"

You can support this channel on Patreon! Link below Around the mid-2000’s, the LED traffic light began making its way onto the scene. Recent developments in LED technology meant that energy efficient replacements for the standard incandescent lamp were beginning to appear. Municipalities rejoiced with the energy savings they provided, but in cold climates they weren’t met with quite as warm a welcome. Not producing sufficient heat to melt snow on their lenses, some drivers became confused by ambiguous signals and caused fatal accidents. This video tells the tale of why this newfound “problem” generated harsh criticism to the new technology, and explains why this reaction is entirely dumb and regressive. Despite the vastness of Earth’s oceans, plastic pollutants are turning up everywhere, from the deep sea to the Arctic ice pack. Shockingly, researchers estimate that by 2050 the oceans will contain more plastic—by weight—than fish. As these degrading plastics leach potentially toxic chemicals into the seas, they pose a serious threat to ocean animals, as well as to humans. To combat this frightening prognosis, Hawaii—among other places—is contemplating a ban on the sale and distribution of single-use polystyrene. In this short film from filmmaker Chris Hanson, 17 Hawaiian students study the impact of plastic pollution on their local beaches in order to help create a more sustainable future for the world’s oceans. Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now twice the size of Texas and contains 1.8 trillion pieces of trash floating in the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup is an ambitious non-profit committed to removing it, and on Saturday it launches its first system out to sea from the San Francisco Bay. Dutch entrepreneur Boyan Slat came up with the idea when he was 16 years old. "I went scuba diving in Greece and I actually saw more plastic bags than fish around me," said the Ocean Cleanup CEO and founder. "I wondered, why can't we just clean this up?" He founded the organization in 2013 and the team has raised $35 million through crowdfunding campaigns and big donors like Marc Benioff and Peter Thiel. System 001 is a 600 meter long float, with a 3 meter skirt and it's designed to corral plastic and debris. The collected garbage will then be removed by garbage truck-like ships. The initial contraption will be used for testing and aims remove about 50 tons of the garbage, but the goal is to launch 60 systems to reduce the floating garbage patch by 50 percent in the next five years.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. The Ocean Cleanup Technology, Explained

The Ocean Cleanup Technology, Explained

The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. Our passive systems are estimated to remove half the Great Pacific Garbage patch in just five years, and at a fraction of the cost. Our first cleanup system will be deployed in the summer of 2018. This is how it works.
