Great Pacific Garbage Patch cleanup has begun | Engadget Today

Great Pacific Garbage Patch cleanup has begun | Engadget Today

An ambitious project to clean up the 88,000 tons of plastic floating in the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" has begun. On Sunday, the Ocean Cleanup Project started towing its "Ocean Cleanup System 001" from San Francisco to a trial site some 240 nautical miles (260 miles) away. Once it arrives, the wind and waves will push System 001 into a U-shape and it will slowly drift along on its own. A 10-foot long skirt hanging below will collect pieces of plastic as small as a millimeter in size, and smaller boats will later scoop them up and take them to shore for recycling. This Sea-Craft Looks Like A Plane, Has A Car's Engine, And Docks Like A Boat

The AirFish-8 is an alternative method of sea transportation, combining the technologies of aviation and marine craft.  Company Wigetworks have created AirFish-8, a boat/plane hybrid that glides on water. Due to the machines unique structure, it is able to utilise what is known as the "Wing in Ground Effect." This is when an aircraft is able to produce additional lift when flying near the ground. AirFish-8 has a V8 car engine, which runs on unleaded petrol and can travel up to 121 mph; that's three times faster than typical marine craft.  The sea-craft is currently still in a trial phase but the company hope to have it fully operational by mid-2018. _________________________________________ Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TWITTER: https://twitter.com/techinsider INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/

Underwater Lawnmowers Are Cleaning Trash Out Of Rivers

This Aquatic Weed Harvester can gather weeds and excessive amounts of trash in waterways of all sizes. Cleantec Infra made the machine that functions similarly like an underwater lawnmower. Its conveyer belt lowers into the water and cuts, collects, and stores the trash/weeds until it needs to be discharged.  The Harvester is one of many ways humans are trying to battle the growing threat of sea pollution all around the world.  _________________________________ Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Despite the vastness of Earth’s oceans, plastic pollutants are turning up everywhere, from the deep sea to the Arctic ice pack. Shockingly, researchers estimate that by 2050 the oceans will contain more plastic—by weight—than fish. As these degrading plastics leach potentially toxic chemicals into the seas, they pose a serious threat to ocean animals, as well as to humans. To combat this frightening prognosis, Hawaii—among other places—is contemplating a ban on the sale and distribution of single-use polystyrene. In this short film from filmmaker Chris Hanson, 17 Hawaiian students study the impact of plastic pollution on their local beaches in order to help create a more sustainable future for the world’s oceans. How the oceans can clean themselves: Boyan Slat at TEDxDelft

How the oceans can clean themselves: Boyan Slat at TEDxDelft

18-year-old Boyan Slat combines environmentalism, entrepreneurism and technology to tackle global issues of sustainability. After diving in Greece, and coming across more plastic bags than fish, he wondered; "why can't we clean this up?" While still being on secondary school, he then decided to dedicate half a year of research to understand plastic pollution and the problems associated with cleaning it up. This ultimately led to his passive clean-up concept, which he presented at TEDxDelft 2012. Working to prove the feasibility of his concept, Boyan Slat currently gives lead to a team of approximately 50 people, and temporarily quit his Aerospace Engineering study to completely focus his efforts on The Ocean Cleanup. The progress of The Ocean Cleanup can be followed through www.theoceancleanup.com, www.facebook.com/TheOceanCleanup, as well as www.twitter.com/TheOceanCleanup. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now twice the size of Texas and contains 1.8 trillion pieces of trash floating in the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup is an ambitious non-profit committed to removing it, and on Saturday it launches its first system out to sea from the San Francisco Bay. Dutch entrepreneur Boyan Slat came up with the idea when he was 16 years old. "I went scuba diving in Greece and I actually saw more plastic bags than fish around me," said the Ocean Cleanup CEO and founder. "I wondered, why can't we just clean this up?" He founded the organization in 2013 and the team has raised $35 million through crowdfunding campaigns and big donors like Marc Benioff and Peter Thiel. System 001 is a 600 meter long float, with a 3 meter skirt and it's designed to corral plastic and debris. The collected garbage will then be removed by garbage truck-like ships. The initial contraption will be used for testing and aims remove about 50 tons of the garbage, but the goal is to launch 60 systems to reduce the floating garbage patch by 50 percent in the next five years.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. These 10 Inventions Are Saving The Earth

These 10 Inventions Are Saving The Earth

1. This bin collects garbage from the sea. Seabin has a pump that creates a flow of water. The garbage is caught in a bag, allowing water to flow out back to sea. 2. This machine crushes beer bottles into usable sand. 200 grams of powder form each bottle is recycled to preserve beaches. 3. SaltWater Brewery created edible packaging to save sea life. The six-pack rings are made of barley and wheat. Sea life can eat the rings safely. 4. AIR-INK can turn air pollution into ink. it collects carbon soot from a car's exhaust. Then it is processed into a high-quality black ink. 5. These edible water blobs are biodegradable. The capsule is made from a seaweed extract. A greener solution to creating waste-free packaging. 6. This "Ocean Cleanup" machine has a giant floating pipe to capture plastic. The pipe moves with the waves and has floating anchors. The plastic is a; gathered in the center for a boat to remove. 7. Avani's biodegradable bags are saving sea life and reducing ocean pollution. They are made from cassava root and natural starches. Making them harmless for animal consumption. 8. This machine recycles tires. They are turned into rubber crumb for artificial grass. 9. Aquaponics combines fish farming and hydroponics. As the fish eat and grow they produce waste. The wastewater is given to plants as a fertilizer. The plants absorb the nutrients in the water and they are returned to the fish tanks. A natural process to growing food. 10. HomeBiogas 2.0 turns food scraps into cooking gas. The gas flows from the system directly to the kitchen stove. It can be fed up to six liters of waste and digest almost anything. HomeBiogas can also create fertilizer that goes back into soil. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more.
