Don Bradman's Duck - Numberphile

Don Bradman's Duck - Numberphile

One of the most famous stories from the sort of cricket involves numbers, averages, and a duck. More links & stuff in full description below ↓↓↓ Archive footage courtesy of AP Archive: https://www.youtube.com/c/aparchive * Batting average list shown was current in December 2017. It includes one still active player (Australian Steve Smith) whose average will change. It is a list that uses a threshold of 20 matches minimum. Different lists use different minimums for matches, innings, or runs scored to weed out freakish cases. ** Comparing athletes, especially across sports, is notoriously difficult and more of a conversation starter than exact science. An interesting article here: https://www.statslife.org.uk/sports/1989-did-don-bradman-s-cricketing-genius-make-him-a-statistical-outlier *** A lower "not out" score in Bradman's next innings would also have made a 100+ average possible, but that's a very unlikely scenario in the "first innings" of a match. I did not want the video getting bogged down by intricacies and unlikely scenarios. In case you are curious, here is the scorecard for the next match Australia played... http://www.howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Matches/MatchScorecard.asp?MatchCode=0318 Numberphile is supported by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI): http://bit.ly/MSRINumberphile We are also supported by Science Sandbox, a Simons Foundation initiative dedicated to engaging everyone with the process of science. Ricky Ponting claims that he caught that catch 100% even though he clearly grassed it. He lost his composure when he was asked a tricky question by Indian journalist. And now Brad Haddin too joined the cheater's club by claiming wicket of New Zealand's Broom when his gloves actually dislodged bails.

Cricket highlights 1899-1938(W.G.Grace, Ranjithsinghji, Jack hobbs, Don Bradman, len hutton)

"The Lord's Taverners present 'Cricket Highlights' Commentary written by Michael Melford and spoken by E.W. Swanton." L/S of Lord's Cricket Ground - a match in progress. C/U of batsman "England's young and very successful captain" (not named but probably Peter May). 1899 footage of the "Lord's Taverners and their ladies" - a panning shot of spectators in the stand. The film's narrator describes how this documentary will show 60 years of cricketing history "From W.G. Grace to Peter May, Boer War to Cold War, Penny Farthing to Sputnik...the highlights of yesterday, of the rich period between the wars." W.G. Grace is seen practising in the nets. We then see Ranji in the crease. C/U of Jacks Hobbs, he smiles and laughs at the camera. Ranji "47 and rather plump" walks out onto the pitch (Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji). We see him walking off again: "in this hurried new world, even he didn't stay too long." Various shots of cricketers in action: Jack Hobbs, Frank Woolley and Percy George Fender. C/Us of members of the 1921 Australian team: Warwick Armstrong, Herbie Collins, (Horseshoe Collins), Arthur Mailey and Jack Gregory. Leeds - M/S of two men in suits smoking pipes standing on the pitch. Lionel Tennyson loses the toss. The teams walk onto the pitch. M/S of Bardsley and Tommy Andrews (Australian team) walking out onto the pitch. Top shots of the large crowds watching the match. Shot of a game in progress - the South African team at Lord's in 1924. Herbie Taylor's team are presented by their captain to King George V - good shot of them shaking hands. M/S of the King speaking to Herbie Taylor on the pitch. Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe are described as a "formidable new partnership" over footage of their play. M/S of the pair walking onto the pitch in Australia. Large crowds welcome the British team home after their victory. Lord's - various footage of new grandstands being built (1926?) to meet the enormous demand for seats. The board of control met to appoint test selectors - panning shot of the men seated around a table in the board room. Lord Harris was present. High angle shots of crowds at the Oval - everyone dressed in their Sunday best. Australian team's visit in 1930. M/S of Percy Chapman and Bill Woodfull walking out onto the pitch to toss. Crowds applaud. Woodfull leads the Australian team out onto the pitch. The commentator relates the story of the match over footage of Hobbs and Woolley walking out onto the pitch. Various shots of the match in progress. Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji ("Duleep") is featured, as is Woolley. C/U of Don Bradman. High angle shots of Bradman playing at Leeds Cricket Ground - Headingley. Narrator lists names of all the bowlers including Harold Larwood, Richard Tyldesley, Maurice Tate. Australia 1933 - various footage of Adelaide match. Woodfull gets hit by a fast bowl then loses his bat. Bradman ducks to miss a fast ball. High angle shots of the match "probably the most unpleasant ever played." (Presumably this is the bodyline series). 1938 - the Oval, Len Hutton reaches an historic 364. John Fingleton hobbles off with a strained muscle. Bill O'Reilly bowls. High angle of crowds applauding. Funny shot of a large man trying to squeeze through the "Ladies Gate" to see the climax of the innings. He tries to climb over the turnstile to get in. Hutton "goes on and on and on" to pass Bradman's score of 8 years before. M/S of crowd applauding. Bradman shakes Hutton's hand in congratulation. The players stop for refreshments. "They pause for drinks inside, no such good fortune outside." M/S of the large man seen earlier trying to get into a pub ("The Cricketers") - the door is locked. Bradman bowls and twists an ankle - he is carried off. Australia lose the match. C/U of the scoreboard. Footage of Bill Edrich and Denis Compton batting. Crowds invade the pitch as match ends. High angle shot of the large crowds. "The End."

The Overshadowed Genius

The Overshadowed Genius

It is often said that if Don Bradman hadn't come along, Wally Hammond would have probably been regarded as the greatest batsman of his era. His rivalry with the Don is the stuff legends are made up of, and he himself is arguably one of the most graceful, beautiful stroke-players of all time. Wally Hammond was a most exciting cricketer, perhaps the more so for the hint of an almost Olympian aloofness. He was also - and the two do not always go together - a naturally-gifted athlete who could excel at any game he cared to play; today he would be brought up as a rising football star. He had that physical stamp; he moved easily, with an ease which yet promised that, at need, he could launch himself into a tiger leap. Even as late as 1951, when he made his last first-class appearance and after he had put on a considerable amount of weight, his movement was poised, assured, and graceful. The instant he walked out of a pavilion, white-spotted blue handkerchief showing from his right pocket, bat tucked underarm, cap at a hint of an angle, he was identifiable as a thoroughbred. Strongly-built, square-shouldered, deep-chested, with impressively powerful forearms, it seemed as if his bat weighed nothing in those purposeful hands. His figures are convincing evidence of his quality. Between 1920 and 1951 he scored 50,493 runs, with 167 centuries and an average of 56.10; in Tests 7249 runs (22 centuries) at 58.45, as a bowler, 732 wickets (average 30.58); and he held 819 catches. Like Jack Hobbs, he might have achieved even more impressive figures if he had been able to play throughout his career. A natural player, he was virtually never coached until he had become a county player, when George Dennett used sometimes to advise him. Instinctively basically correct, he was sound in defence, but never defensively-minded. Like most outstanding batsmen, he was primarily a front-foot player who, with the years, operated more off the back. His great power lay in his driving, which was pure textbook in style, clean, apparently effortless but, through the combination of innate timing and immense strength, often achieving immense velocity. As a young man he was a dashing strokemaker; willing to tilt at all the bowlers of the world. He remained superbly stylish, his cover-driving, from front foot or back, utterly memorable. In those early days he cut, glanced, hooked and lofted the ball quite fearlessly. With his early maturity, he became a thinking batsmen.
