Glenn Gould's U.S. Television Debut: Bernstein Conducting Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor

Glenn Gould's U.S. Television Debut: Bernstein Conducting Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor

Performing the first movement of Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052, with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic. Gould's performance begins at 18:03. Originally aired on January 31, 1960 on CBS Television as part of its Ford Presents series, this program was entitled "The Creative Performer." The entire show is actually three performances — by Gould, the soprano Eileen Farrell (singing the "Suicidio!" aria from *La Gioconda*), & Igor Stravinsky (conducting the last three scenes of his ballet *The Firebird*) — punctuated with scintillating musicological lectures by Maestro-Professor Bernstein, who is arguably the star of the show. Though I recommend watching the program in its entirety, here's a time-stamped playlist, in case you'd like to jump to any given section: 1. Leonard Bernstein, on the vagaries of score notations: 0:00 - 12:56 2. Leonard Bernstein, intro to Gould: 12:57 - 18:02 3. Glenn Gould: 18:03 - 27:08 4. Leonard Bernstein, intro to Farrell: 27:09 - 33:46 5. Eileen Farrell: 33:47 - 38:24 6. Leonard Bernstein, intro to Stravinsky: 38:25 - 40:05 7. Igor Stravinsky: 40:06 - 51:06 8. Closing Credits: 51:07 - 52:24 Thanks go to two intrepid Gouldians who did the heavy lifting to track down, acquire, & beautifully digitize this rare masterpiece. Without them, we wouldn't be here enjoying it.

Rachmaninoff plays Piano Concerto 3: http://youtu.be/2uqZhnqHMAg Join me on Facebook: http://fb.com/classicalmasterpieces The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff between the autumn of 1900 and April 1901. The second and third movements were first performed with the composer as soloist on 2 December 1900. The complete work was premiered, again with the composer as soloist, on 9 November 1901, with his cousin Alexander Siloti conducting. This video contains all three movements played by Rachmaninoff. This piece is one of Rachmaninoff's most enduringly popular pieces, and established his fame as a concerto composer. *UPDATE I know there has been a lot of controversies about who's playing second and third movements. Personally I got this recording from a CD which said it was Rachmaninoff who was playing, so I decided to upload it on youtube. I'm not exactly sure who's playing second or third movements but am definitely sure its Rachmaninoff who's playing the first.

Aaron Copland: The Tender Land Suite (1949) [DDD]

Aaron Copland: The Tender Land Suite (1949) [DDD]

Elgin Symphony Orchestra conducted by / Orquesta Sinfónica de Elgin dirigida por Robert Hanson. I. Introduction & Love Music / Introducción y Música de Amor (0:00) II. Party Scene / Escena de la Fiesta (10:15) III. Finale: The Promise of Living / Final: Promesa de Vida (15:05) Aaron Copland (1900-1990) is one of the most famous American composers; his music has been heard all over in political as well as in public events, and it has been since honored or parodied by several composers after him. His opera The Tender Land was actually intended to college and university performers, yet he submitted it to the NBC and to the (now defunct) New York City Opera only to become a tremendous flop. Nonetheless, the opera contains a subtle social critic against McCarthyism, from which Copland became a victim for his leftist associations two decades before this political occurrence. The Star Wars Suite - The Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Live)

The Star Wars Suite - The Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Live)

On June 2017, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) hosted three orchestral concerts called Galaxymphony which included some of the soundtrack from various space and sci-fi movies. This is their version of some of the Star Wars soundtrack across all seven movies. The concert was hosted by Jakob Stegelmann and conducted by Antony Hermus. The performance was orchestrated by The Danish National Symphony Orchestra with help from the 'Camerata' and 'Hymnia' choirs. As told in the video, the host, Jakob Stegelmann, is very passionate about the Star Wars films and therefore evidently the main event of the concert. Therefore, I have shared this extra long video (what a horror it was to render) for you to enjoy. TIMESTAMPS: [00:00] - Introduction by host Jakob Stegelmann [05:10] - Star Wars Main Title Theme [10:57] - Anakin's Theme and Love Theme [16:39] - Duel of the Fates [21:21] - Luke and Leia [27:40] - Imperial March [31:22] - Yoda's Theme [35:49] - Finale and Throne Room [45:08] - Tribute to Carrie Fisher by host Jakob Stegelmann [46:10] - Princess Leia's Theme [52:25] - End Monologue by host Jakob Stegelmann [53:06] - Encore: Cantina Band *SUBTITLES ARE AVAILABLE* Sorry for the crackling sounds, something must've happened rendering it. The original soundtrack of Star Wars was scored by John Williams. No copyright intended. All rights go to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Danmarks Radio).

Glenn Gould and Leonard Bernstein: Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor (BWV 1052)

Glenn Gould and Leonard Bernstein: Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor (BWV 1052)

This clip is absolutely sensational: as education, composition and in performance. Glenn Gould was 28 years old here. For the impatient, Gould's performance begins at 5:08, but I strongly encourage you to watch Leonard Bernstein's fascinating introduction. This film originally aired in 1960 on CBS Television as part of its "Ford Presents" series. The entire film in high quality (of which this clip is a small part) was painstakingly hunted down by YouTuber erp65 and his friends. It can be found here, and I urge you, I really DO urge you, to see it in its entirety: https://youtu.be/9Nx09pigZRI I have sought erp65's permission to cross-post, as a courtesy, but I have not yet heard back. Meanwhile, my abject enthusiasm got the better of me. This film has to be promulgated far and wide. This was erp65's entire intention here, and we owe him and his friends enormous thanks. Igor Stravinsky - Symphony in Three Movements

Igor Stravinsky - Symphony in Three Movements

Symphony in Three Movements, for orchestra (1945) I. ♩ = 160 II. Andante - Interlude (L'istesso tempo) (9:56) III. Con moto (16:33) Berliner Philharmoniker Pierre Boulez Igor Stravinsky completed his Symphony in Three Movements in 1945. The first movement was begun in April 1942, and the final work was completed a few months after the end of World War II. During this time the composer was engaged in contract negotiations to write film scores. Among the film moguls interested in commissioning Stravinsky was Louis B. Mayer, then president of MGM. Stravinsky had already written music before the projects were scrapped, and much of it found its way into Symphony in Three Movements. The outer movements involved wartime news footage, and the central movement was written for the appearance of the Virgin Mary in the film The Song of Bernadette, based on the Franz Werfel novel. To integrate the different groups of material, Stravinsky chose to feature the piano and harp in separate, concertante roles in the first two movements, and then combined them in the third movement in an extended fugal arrangement. The symphony is a great balancing act, weaving together disparate musical ideas. The outer movements are explosive, indicative of the film score style common to American war footage. Ironic artifice, a signature sound in his music, is particularly understated in this symphony. Likewise, the middle movement, originally intended for the Virgin apparition, is suitably wrought with veneration, though perhaps not to the extent that would have please the film's producers. Stravinsky was not the sort of composer who gushed excessively, if at all. His Symphonies of Wind Instruments was an elegy of Debussy's passing, a composer and friend of enormous importance to Stravinsky, but any lamentations in the work are under total control. It was not in his character to express his feelings musically, and in fact, felt that musical was incapable of "expressing" anything. That being the case, for him to depict Bernadette's shock and amazement at encountering the Mother of Christ would have sounded unnatural. The central movement is not rhapsodic or indicative of a human soul overwhelmed in the presence of a divine being. It is contemplative music, subtle and understated, and free of amazement. The outer movements are somewhat more successful in capturing the intended spirit of war footage. They feature tumultuous blasts of brass and driving rhythms but again the composer seems removed from the excitement and concern the music is supposed to convey, instead sounding rather bizarre and exotic. The focused intensity of a believer in either war or religion was too singular a nuance for Stravinsky to sustain for an entire film score. Ultimately, the result of this forgivable failing was an excellent and memorable symphony. [allmusic.com] Art by Jiro Yoshihara
