People From Around The Globe Met For The First Flat Earth Conference (HBO)

Conspiracy theories are nothing new, but in the age of the internet, they spread like “chemtrails” in the wind. The theory that the world is flat, for example, gained so much popularity online that this year 500 people gathered for the first ever International Flat Earth Conference. The belief that the world is flat has kind of been around forever, but it picked up steam in 2015 with a rash of online communities, YouTube videos, podcasts, and even songs preaching the gospel. At some point, Kyrie Irving of the Boston Celtics started talking about it too, which really seemed to blow the lid off the heliocentric model. So, the time was right for the Flat Earth International Conference, the first of its kind, held at the beginning of November outside of Raleigh, NC. Sold out since May, the conference brought together hundreds of people who had before only really interacted online. It was an opportunity for believers to network, share research, meet thought leaders, find a flat-earth compatible mate, show off various NASA parody t-shirts, and talk shit about Neil deGrasse Tyson. VICE News was there for it all. As one attendee told us, “it gets pretty deep.” We'll let you be the judge. What Would Happen If The Moon Disappeared

What Would Happen If The Moon Disappeared

Our moon is on the move. Each year, it drifts an estimated 1.5 inches further away from Earth. And in the process, Earth's rotation is actually slowing down. What if one night, the moon simply disappeared? Would we miss it? A full moon is on average 14,000 times brighter than the next brightest night-sky object, Venus. So without it, every night would be as dark as a new moon. And star gazing would be spectacular. But by the next morning, you'd begin to realize just how important the moon is for life on Earth. To start, between the sun, Earth's rotation, and the moon, the moon has the largest influence on Earth's tides. Without it, high and low tides would shrink by an estimated 75%. This would jeopardize the lives of many types of crabs, mussels, and sea snails that live in tidal zones and disrupt the diets of larger animals who rely on them for food, threatening entire coastal ecosystems in the process. Within a few decades, we would start to see mass population declines in the sea and on land. One of the largest spawning events in the world occurs in the Great Barrier Reef. Each November in the days following the light of a full moon, coral colonies across the reef — spanning an area larger than the state of New Mexico — release millions of egg and sperm sacs within nearly minutes of one another. Scientists are certain that the full moon plays a role in the timing, but exactly how remains a mystery. On land, animals like these Red Crabs also use lunar cues to reproduce. After living most of their lives in the mountains, millions of adult crabs migrate down to shore. And then, only during the last quarter of the moon, females release their eggs into the sea. Now, the moon may not hold as much sway over human reproduction. But without it, something else we care equally about would change — the weather. Tides and tidal currents help mix cold arctic waters with warmer waters in the tropics. This balances temperatures and stabilizes the climate worldwide. Without the moon, weather forecasts would be practically impossible. The average difference between the hottest and coldest places on Earth could grow to life-threatening extremes. But none of this compares to the biggest change that we would have coming over the next millennia. Right now, Earth tilts on its axis at 23.5º mostly due to the moon's gravity. If the moon disappeared, Earth's axis would wobble between anywhere from 10 to 45º. Some experts estimate that Jupiter could help keep Earth's tilt from reeling completely out of control. But even just an extra 10º tilt could wreak havoc on the climate and seasons. In the past, Earth's tilt has changed by about 1-2º, which scientists think could have caused Ice Ages in the past. It's hard to know what a 10º or 45º tilt would do but probably nothing good for most life on Earth. The moon isn't just imperative for life on Earth today. Experts believe that it may also have played a key role in the formation of life more than 3.5 billion years ago. Turns out, the moon isn't just a beacon of light in the night sky. Its existence is crucial to the delicate balancing act that makes life here possible. Mercury - Mercury isn't only the closest planet to the sun, it's also the smallest one in our solar system. With temperatures ranging from -195 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit, and nearly constant meteorite impacts, it’d be a hard place to live. Venus - With surface temperatures averaging around 900 degrees Fahrenheit,Venus is the hottest planet in the Milky Way. And, much like its namesake, the Roman goddess of beauty, it’s a real stunner. Mars - Similar in size to Earth, the red planet has discernible seasons and average temperatures ranging from -195 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Jupiter’s Moon Europa - First things first, you couldn’t live on Jupiter. The planet is not only a hotbed of storms but made almost entirely of gas. But, scientists think that one of its moons, Europa, might be a good place for human life. Saturn’s Moon Titan - Because of its rings, people consider Saturn the jewel of our solar system, but like Jupiter, there’s no way we could live on it. The planet’s largest moon, Titan, is a different story, however. Uranus’ Moon Miranda - Let’s talk about Uranus, or one of its moons at least. While a few of the planet’s 27 moons would be suitable for settlement, NASA scientists agree that Miranda is one of the better options. Neptune’s Moon Triton - As another gas planet, Neptune doesn’t have much of a surface to speak of. Pluto - Taking roughly 248 years to make one revolution around the Sun, Pluto is a frigid, unforgiving planet. Kepler 186-F - In 2014, NASA uncovered one alien planet that seemed particularly ripe for human habitation: Kepler 186F. Tatooine - Home to both Luke and Anakin Skywalker, Tatooine is integral to the Star Wars plot lines. While this desert planet is as geographically interesting as a brown paper bag, its sky is a different story. Instead of one star, it has two.

The nicknamed Planet Nine is a theorised, but undiscovered large world that could potentially be hiding in the fringes of the solar system. Astronomers studying the Kuiper belt have predicted the possibility of the 9th planet because certain gravitational anomalies in the outer solar system can be explained if, this enigmatic world exists. If the unnamed planet is lurking beyond the orbit of Pluto, then astronomers believe that it could be 10 times the mass of Earth and may have an orbit 20 times further from the sun than Neptune. Because Planet Nine has not been discovered it remains a hypothetical object and until our telescopes find and directly observe it, we can only Imagine what this mysterious planet looks like. But science suggests three possibilities, it is either a massive rocky super world made of the same material as Earth, a huge Icy object much like Pluto or another giant gas planet potentially resembling something like Neptune. So if we first assume that this mysterious, currently undiscovered object is a solid world just like the Earth, and we had the technology to travel to and explore its surface, what would it be like to stand on a rocky, Planet nine? The exploring astronauts would have to wear special space suits as Planet Nine is theorised to have an elongated orbit that lasts around 15,000 years and travels as far out as 1,200 AU from the sun, making the surface of this world extremely cold, possibly - 226 degrees Celsius (-374 degrees Fahrenheit). There suits may also have to protect them from the planets intense gravity that could be many times that of Earths. Looking across the surface of a rocky Planet Nine the explorers might see a bizarre volcanic world, that is scared with fire. They might observe a dark landscape made up of canyons, rocky mountains and huge volcanoes as far as the eye can see. Ice and snow would probably blanket the world due to the atmosphere being so cold that it condenses and settles to the surface. Because the predicted planet is so large, it might still have a lot of internal energy and heat that would cause regular volcanic eruptions to spew lava out on to the rock, causing a subtle red glow across a frozen landscape. As the lava reaches the surface of Planet Nine it would freeze in the cold of space, possibly forming a type of black glass known as Obsidian. Billions of miles away from the sun, the explorers might only be able to see parts of this mysterious world, as its surface would only be lite by the dim glimmer of distant stars flickering away in a constant nights sky. If Planet Nine does exist and is a rocky world, it would be as inhospitable as you could ever imagine. It’s understandably difficult for scientists to try and predict what a planet’s made of or what it looks like when you can’t even be sure it’s there. But the problem with a rocky Planet Nine is that the early inner solar system probably didn't have enough material to form Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars plus a super rocky planet that may of been ejected out into deep space. So could it instead, be a giant world made of ice, maybe a massive Pluto like planet that formed in cold dark region known as the Kuiper belt? Find out in part 2 of what would it be like to stand on Planet Nine. Cosmic Journeys - Mars: Earth that Never Was

Cosmic Journeys - Mars: Earth that Never Was

Did Mars long ago develop far enough for life to arise? If so, does anything still live within Mars' dusty plains, beneath its ice caps, or somewhere underground? In 1964 the Mariner Four spacecraft flew by Mars and got a good look. What it saw looked more like the Moon than the Earth. Then, in the mid-1970's, two lander-orbiter robot teams, named Viking, went in for an even closer look. The landers tested the soil for the chemical residues of life. All the evidence from Viking told us: Mars is dead. And extremely harsh. The mission recorded Martian surface temperatures from -17 degrees Celsius down to -107. We now know it can get even colder than that at the poles. The atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide, with only traces of oxygen. And it's extremely thin, with less than one percent the surface pressure of Earth's atmosphere. And it's bone dry. In fact, the Sahara Desert is a rainforest compared to Mars, where water vapor is a trace gas in the atmosphere. On Earth, impact craters erode over time from wind and water... and even volcanic activity. On Mars, they can linger for billions of years. Earth's surface is shaped and reshaped by the horizontal movement of plates that make up its crust driven by heat welling up from the planet's hot interior. At half the width and only 11% the mass of Earth, Mars doesn't generate enough heat to support wide-scale plate tectonics. Nor does it have the gravity to hold a thick atmosphere needed to store enough heat at the surface to allow liquid water to flow. Nonetheless, some areas that looked to Viking-era scientists like craters and volcanic areas, were later shown to be riverbeds, lake bottoms, and ocean shorelines. If water once flowed on Mars' surface, where did it all go? This was the scene at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in 2004. The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity had just bounced down on the Red Planet. When the excitement died down, the rovers were set off on one of the most remarkable journeys in the history of planetary exploration. Missions like this could one day pave the way for a day when we'll view images from a real astronaut's camera. Opportunity had come to rest in a small crater near the equator, at a spot called Meridiani Planum. Here, in plain view, on a nearby crater wall, its camera revealed exposed bedrock, the first ever seen on Mars. Not far away, the rover found layered rocks on the face of a cliff. On Earth, they typically form as sedimentary layers at the bottom of oceans. And at every turn, Opportunity rolled across tiny, smooth, round pellets. They became known as "blueberries" because they appeared purplish-brown against Mars' rust-colored surface. Initially thought to be volcanic in origin, they turned out to be iron-rich spherules of the type that form within cavities in the mud at the bottom of an ocean. Drilling into rocks, the rover inserted a spectrometer to read the mineral content. The readings showed significant amounts of sulfate salt, a tracer for standing water. That wasn't all. Spirit's broken wheel, dragging behind it, exposed soils saturated in salt. Clearly there once was water on Mars' surface, but how long ago? And, if there is anything left, where would you find it? One possible answer: the North Pole. From orbit, this region seemed to be covered in frozen CO2 - what we call dry ice. But was there water ice below the surface? Enter Phoenix, a lander that touched down near the North Pole in early 2008. Radar readings from orbit, taken by the Mars Express mission, hinted at the presence of ice just below the surface. The Phoenix lander's descent thrusters blew away the top layer of soil, allowing its camera to snap pictures of what looked like ice. Scientists instructed the robot to conduct a simple experiment: reach out and dig a trench, then watch what happens. As expected, clumps of white stuff appeared. A couple of days later, it was gone. Vaporized. That means it can't be salt or frozen CO2, which is stable in the cold dry temperatures of the Martian pole. So it had to be water, the first ever directly seen on Mars. There are indications that the North Pole was actually warm enough in the recent past for water ice to become liquid. The Mars Reconaissance Orbiter, or MRO, used radar pulses to peer beneath the surface of the ice cap. These data reveal that the ice, just over a mile thick, formed in a succession of layers as the climate alternated between warm and cold. Our planet avoids mood swings like this in part because its spin is stabilized by a massive moon. Mars' spin is not, so it can really wobble, with the pole tilting toward the sun for long periods. New observations by the MRO spacecraft show that these wobbles can lead to dramatic releases of CO2, and warming periods due to an increase in the greenhouse effect.

Solar System Video

Solar System Video

Solar System Video showing the 8 planets of the Solar System orbiting the Sun. As we move out from Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, towards the gas giant planets of the outer Solar System, each of the planets take longer to orbit the sun. The planets in order of size are; Mercury Mars Venus Earth Neptune Uranus Saturn Jupiter When listed in terms of distance from the Sun, the order is as follows; Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune. All of the planets orbit the Sun in an anti-clockwise direction. Most also rotate on their axis in an anti-clockwise direction. The exceptions to this rule are; Uranus - Which rotates on it's end like a bowling ball Venus - Which rotates clockwise, but very slowly. Venus rotates so slowly that a day on planet Venus is longer than a year! The planet with the fastest rotation in Jupiter, which rotates every 10 hours. So fast that it causes the planet to flatten out a little. In this Solar System video, the distance between the planets is not to scale. In the real Solar System the distances are vast. The size of the planets in this Solar System video is also just an indication of their relative size. In reality Jupiter is many more times the size of the Earth. The planets would also not create shadows on each other as they do in this video. Other bodies that exist in the Solar System but are not included in this Solar System video include, The Dwarf Planets (of which Pluto is one), The asteroid belt (which sits between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter), and the Ort Cloud (which sits beyond the orbit of Neptune) I hope you find this Solar System useful. Feel free to use it for educational purposes in your classroom when teaching kids about the Solar System.

NASA | A View From The Other Side

NASA | A View From The Other Side

A number of people who've seen NASA's annual lunar phase and libration videos have asked what the other side of the Moon looks like, the side that can't be seen from the Earth. This video answers that question. The imagery was created using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data. This video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/goto?4253 Like our videos?
