Glenn Gould's U.S. Television Debut: Bernstein Conducting Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor

Glenn Gould's U.S. Television Debut: Bernstein Conducting Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor

Performing the first movement of Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052, with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic. Gould's performance begins at 18:03. Originally aired on January 31, 1960 on CBS Television as part of its Ford Presents series, this program was entitled "The Creative Performer." The entire show is actually three performances — by Gould, the soprano Eileen Farrell (singing the "Suicidio!" aria from *La Gioconda*), & Igor Stravinsky (conducting the last three scenes of his ballet *The Firebird*) — punctuated with scintillating musicological lectures by Maestro-Professor Bernstein, who is arguably the star of the show. Though I recommend watching the program in its entirety, here's a time-stamped playlist, in case you'd like to jump to any given section: 1. Leonard Bernstein, on the vagaries of score notations: 0:00 - 12:56 2. Leonard Bernstein, intro to Gould: 12:57 - 18:02 3. Glenn Gould: 18:03 - 27:08 4. Leonard Bernstein, intro to Farrell: 27:09 - 33:46 5. Eileen Farrell: 33:47 - 38:24 6. Leonard Bernstein, intro to Stravinsky: 38:25 - 40:05 7. Igor Stravinsky: 40:06 - 51:06 8. Closing Credits: 51:07 - 52:24 Thanks go to two intrepid Gouldians who did the heavy lifting to track down, acquire, & beautifully digitize this rare masterpiece. Without them, we wouldn't be here enjoying it.

Stokowski Rehearsal - Rachmaninoff 'Paganini Rhapsody' - Jerome Lowenthal, piano

Stokowski Rehearsal - Rachmaninoff 'Paganini Rhapsody' - Jerome Lowenthal, piano

In February 1968, Leopold Stokowski and his American Symphony Orchestra gave the opening concert in the new Madison Square Garden building. The programme included Beethoven's 'Leonore' Overture No. 3, Barber's 'Adagio for Strings' and Rachmaninoff's 'Paganini Rhapsody' with Jerome Lowenthal at the piano. Television cameras were on hand for one of the rehearsals and material was provided for two programmes. One consisted of just rehearsal excerpts and the other was a documentary entitled "Stokowski at 88." In this segment we see Stokowski rehearsing Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," a work he and the composer had premiered in 1934, making the first recording shortly thereafter. What will probably astonish the viewer are some of Stokowski's tempos. These are much faster than those he adopted on the composer's own recording and it is a tribute to Jerome Lowenthal that he manages to keep up with the conductor's hell-for-leather speeds! It is possible that Stokowski had his eye on the clock and that rehearsal time was running short, causing him to put the accelerator on to avoid going into expensive overtime. Not only were the aforementioned works on the programme but so too were Schubert's 'Unfinished' Symphony, a Bach transcription and Ravel's 'Bolero'! On the other hand, if the same tempos were adopted in the concert then both soloist and conductor must have agreed that this was the way the piece should go! Also up loaded here are other rehearsal excerpts, from the Beethoven 'Leonore' Overture and Barber's 'Adagio for Strings.'

Traces to Nowhere - The conductor Carlos Kleiber, with English subtitles (HD 1080p)

Traces to Nowhere - The conductor Carlos Kleiber, with English subtitles (HD 1080p)

Carlos Kleiber was one of the legendary conductors of his time, famous for his infrequent, but supreme interpretations. He had an unusual small repertoire for a major conductor, focusing on only a few symphonies, piano concertos and operas, and demanded unusually long rehearsals. Yet he managed to pull the finest efforts from his musicians because he made them believe in the music as much as he did. On the 11th July 2004 Carlos Kleiber got into his car and drove from Munich, via the Alps, to his holiday home in the remote Slovenian village of Konjsica. There he wrote a final letter to a friend in which he bid farewell to the world. A short time later the conductor, increasingly plagued by illness and suffering, was found dead. The documentary ‘Traces to Nowhere – The conductor Carlos Kleiber’, represents the first film dedicated to the enigmatic personality of the conductor. The film follows in the traces of Kleiber’s final journey and, by means of the recollections of friends and others who knew Kleiber – including the first and only interview with his sister Veronika Kleiber – portrays a conductor as renowned for his difficult personality as his brilliant work. Eric Schulz’ film contains not only impressive shots of Kleiber himself but also most illuminative statements of the said friends and companions. Featuring Veronika Kleiber, Michael Gielen, Plácido Domingo, Brigitte Fassbaender, Otto Schenk, Alexander Werner, Manfred Honeck, Otto Staindl, Klaus König, Karl Friedrich Mess, Anne Kirchbach, Martha Scherer a.o.

Rehearsing and conducting the Overture to Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner with the Süddeutsche Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra Available Subtitles: English, Spanish, French 0:00 1st Rehearsal 30:31 2nd Rehearsal 43:36 Performance This video recording provides us with a portrait of a man whose conducting technique contrasts fascinatingly with that of other conductors in the series. Sir Georg Solti's rehearsal and performance of Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture with the Süddeutsche Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra is a fine illustration of this conductor's insistence on absolute precision, his energetic style and his close familiarity with the score. Karajan: Dvorak Symphony No.8 Rehearsal

Herbert von Karajan conducting a dress rehearsal of Dvorak's Symphony No.8 in Japan 1973, with the Berlin philharmonic orchestra. It's mostly a standard run through of the symphony's more tricky passages, where a strong sense of balance between the instruments is key.
