Pfsense is the best way to turn an old computer into a top shelf router. This video is really in-depth and nerdy... just a warning.

The views & opinions in this video are 100% my own and do not express the views & opinions of Microsoft. I was laid off from Microsoft on 7/17/2014 along with thousands of other talented people. I had an amazing 15 years at Microsoft and I will honestly miss working there and I'm still in shock over being laid off. Do not ask me to reveal Microsoft secrets or ask me questions about future projects! I take my NDA very seriously and would never violate it. The emotions and opinions in this video are based on public knowledge and NOT internal information. I would ask that you please respect that. When I say "I don't agree with the direction Microsoft is going" I'm only speaking from public knowledge of 18,000 people being laid off. I have no knowledge of the companies internal strategic direction nor would I share it if I did so please do not ask. I also would like to state that Microsoft is a great company and they are doing their best to ensure the 18,000 employee's that were laid off have enough of a buffer to go out and find a new job. They are doing more then they are required to by law and for that I commend them. It's little cancellation when I was planing to give my life to that company and I'm still upset but people need to know that they are doing their best to ensure people are taken care of during their transition and this is why I am not 'mad' at them. Also I would like to clarify in the video that when I say 'I have a few months to figure things out' that doesn't mean my resources will be exhausted in a few months. Microsoft is taking care of us for a period of time to allow us to transition. It just means I will start the job hunt at that point if progress is not being made on my own. I would never do anything last minute or exhaust my resources without another plan and jeopardize my family. An Old Computer Turns Into A FreeNAS Device Part 1

This was the Keykeeper's old computer. It had been sitting since 2005 when he got a newer one (a Deskpro EN, not that you were wondering or surprised to hear that). I held onto it, waiting for the perfect project. And finally it came--this computer has now become a FreeNAS device providing "Time Capsule" services to Macintosh computers running Mac OS X 10.5. This part talks about the hardware and what I changed or added.

Know How... 5: Resurrect an old PC with Linux

Hosts: Iyaz Akhtar and Leo Laporte Get the know how to take your old PC and give it a new life. There a multitude of Linux distros out there, but today Leo & Iyaz took a look at Ubuntu and Puppy Linux. Instructions: Pick a Linux distro and download an ISO. We featured Ubuntu, Damn Small Linux, and Puppy Linux. Install your ISO to a bootable device. How to create bootable CD: Mac OS X Instructions | Windows 7 Instructions. How to create a bootable USB key: There are two easy options to create a bootable USB key and both are free. We recommend UNetbootin, which is cross platform, but we had issues with the OS X version. Alternatively, there is the Windows-only Pendrive Linux. Boot your PC into Linux by accessing the boot menu. You might have to click F12 or something similar. Enjoy your distro. Should I Use An SSD On A pfSense Router For Caching?

Should I Use An SSD On A pfSense Router For Caching?

I'm building a pfsense router using my old pc. It has 12gb ram, an i5 and a 250GB 850 EVO. Should I swap that out for a 500gb HDD? Especially since I plan to do Web caching. Another question: I used to be able to block youtube ads via my netgear router's hosts file so all my devices connected to wifi wouldn't get youtube ads. Well youtube uses https ads now so I can't. Is there any way to decrypt those packets on the router so they can still be blocked? I know there's Firefox plug-ins to block ads but I liked it better when it was centrally managed for all of my devices -Brandon C. Turn a PC into a powerful DIY router using OPNsense

Turn a PC into a powerful DIY router using OPNsense

Hi guys, My recent semi-obsession with building routers is coming to an end for the time being (until my next upgrade) with this last build - I thought I would try and take a much more straight-forward approach using a proper "old" PC and not a pile of junk like last time. For a nice easy time installing and configuring your Old PC into a router you will need : A PC which will boot from USB and has 2 or more network ports - something from within the last 8 years will probably be OK A USB stick. A dual core processor at 1Ghz with 1Gb of RAM and a 40 Gb Hard drive is good enough for a home router. (https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/hardware.html) If you have an ADSL connection you will need a modem to allow your router to talk to your ISP, I use two old routers in bridge mode for this. Some time to set things up (you can get connected and up and running in a day easily, probably a few hours) I DID spend a small amount (£18) on PCIE quad NIC, if you look around they are surprisingly cheap second hand : https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=intel%20pcie%20network%20card&rt=nc&_mPrRngCbx=1&_udlo&_udhi=30 OPNsense and pfSense are both fantastic free, open-source FreeBSD based router OSes. They both get regular updates and when configured properly are highly reliable, secure and far superior to most of the firmwares you get in consumer routers : https://opnsense.org/ https://www.pfsense.org/ You can get Rufus, the Windows software I used to burn the OPNsense USB stick from here : https://rufus.akeo.ie/ OPNsense documentation is here: https://docs.opnsense.org/ I enjoyed messing about with this, why not give it a go yourself? Building A PFSense Firewall ★Geeking Off★

Building A PFSense Firewall ★Geeking Off★

After a long battle editing this video with Kdenlive I finally got this video done. I got around to building a firewall for my Linux Server Rack project. I started off with a 1U rack mount server chassis, a Intel D2500CCE Atom Dual LAN Mini-ITX Motherboard, 2 sticks of Samsung 2GB PC-8500 DDR3 1066MHz memory, & a ADATA 32 GB SSD. I tossed it all up in the air and it came back down as a firewall. The first power supply I got was junk, it burned out after about a week of use, and I had to replace it. I been Using it now for the past month, I really enjoy using PFSense, and will never be going back to stock routers ever again.
