Always On - Flying on the world's fastest sailboat

Описание

It's called L'Hydroptere and the French concept sailboat -- with its marine style wings -- basically flies on the water. CNET's Molly Wood meets Alain Thebault, the boat's skipper, and gets an inside look at the tech that makes it glide.

The watertight-bulkhead technology of Chinese junks

The watertight-bulkhead technology of Chinese junks

UNESCO: List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding - 2010 URL: http://www.unesco.org/culture/ich/USL/00321 Description: Takes note that China has nominated the watertight-bulkhead technology of Chinese junks for inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, described as follows: Developed in South China's Fujian Province, the watertight-bulkhead technology of Chinese junks permits the construction of ocean-going vessels with watertight compartments. If one or two cabins are accidentally damaged in the course of navigation, seawater will not flood the other cabins and the vessel will remain afloat. The junks are made mainly of camphor, pine and fir timber, and assembled through use of traditional carpenters' tools. They are built by applying the key technologies of rabbet-jointing planks together and caulking the seams between the planks with ramie, lime and tung oil. The construction is directed by a master craftsman who oversees a large number of craftsmen, working in close coordination. Local communities participate by holding solemn ceremonies to pray for peace and safety during construction and before the launch of the completed vessel. The experience and working methods of watertight-bulkhead technology are transmitted orally from master to apprentices. However, the need for Chinese junks has decreased sharply as wooden vessels are replaced by steel-hulled ships, and today only three masters can claim full command of this technology. Associated building costs have also increased owing to a shortage in raw materials. As a result, transmission of this heritage is decreasing and transmitters are forced to seek alternative employment. For more kiteboarding visit http://win.gs/1fJtwmZ Watch the Story Clip: http://youtu.be/zOFSyQ3V0Ig Kai Lenny's $1,500 Kite Board vs ORACLE TEAM USA's $15 million catamaran..."It's like bringing a knife to a gun fight," said ORACLE TEAM USA grinder Matt Mitchell. Those were the comments of Jimmy Spithill, the skipper of ORACLE TEAM USA and the defenders of the America's Cup. The question was whether kite board champion Kai Lenny can outrace the new 72-foot catamaran of ORACLE TEAM USA. Pink slips were on the line when Lenny put his $1,500 board up against the $15 million boat recently on San Francisco Bay. On the same course that will host the 34th America's Cup in September, the two sides engaged in a bridge-to-bridge battle between the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge. _________________________________________________ Experience the world of Red Bull like you have never seen it before. Apache World Record Speed Run to Havana, Cuba

Apache World Record Speed Run to Havana, Cuba

http://ApachePowerboats.com/apache-star [email protected] 1-239-454-1114 APACHE STAR BREAKS WORLD SPEED RECORD – KEY WEST TO HAVANA – AUGUST 1, 2015 History was made by the crew of the Apache Star on Saturday, August 1 when the most famous offshore Deep-V race boat in US history crossed the 110 mile stretch between Key West, Florida USA and Havana, Cuba in world record time of 90 minutes. It is now the fastest crossing between Key West and Havana recorded in history. The Apache Star – a two-time World Champion, Kevlar and carbon fiber Deep-V race boat Apache 50 – shattered the previously established speed record with Apache Powerboats owner and offshore performance legend Mark McManus operating the throttles, and owner/entrepreneur Roger Kluh driving, Engineer John Pompi at the gauges, and navigator Damien Sauvage. The crossing became the first time since 1963 that an American pleasure boat with an American crew has been authorized by the US government to visit Cuba. ‘…I operated the boat as aggressively as I could within safe limits, to try to take care the wellbeing of my crew.” – Mark McManus The Crew of the Apache Star departed towards Havana Cuba at 10:15am EST from the Stock Island Marina Village in Key West. They experienced rougher than expected seas of 8-10 feet, 60 miles into the trip. The Crew arrived at the Port of Havana 1 hour and 30 minutes later, breaking all previously established records by almost 5 hours. “ When we arrived at the dock, people were singing and chanting…” – Mark McManus “The people of Cuba are a warm and happy group of people…” – Mark McManus A sudden loss in GPS signal occurred 28 miles away from the Port of Havana, all 3 GPS navigation devises on-board the Apache Star lost reception. The Apache Star crew relied on two backup navigation systems which allowed the successful completion of this historic mission. “Roger Kluh, the driver did a great job steering the boat” – Mark McManus All four members of the Crew are safely back State-side, the Apache Star is currently at the International Hemingway Yacht Club dry dock awaiting service and maintenance in preparedness for the return to Key West later this month. The previous record for the fastest Florida-to-Cuba crossing was set in 1958 by Forest Johnson, with a time of six hours, 24 minutes. This beat the original record, set in 1922 by Gar Wood. ‪#‎ApacheWorldRecord‬ #ApacheWorldRecord

Is this the future of sailing?

Is this the future of sailing?

In the spirit of progression, Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher have devised a new 6 meter catamaran that is redefining what's possible on the open ocean. It's a vessel that can reach eye-popping speeds of 36 knots while hardly being affected by the ocean conditions. How, you ask? Because it doesn't sail on the surface of the ocean, but uses a hydro-foil to lift the cat above the water and over the chop while still maintaining maximum speeds. So, we'll let you be the judge...is this the future of sailing? _ Experience the world of Red Bull like you have never seen it before. Extreme small plane landing on a ship at sea - and subsequent takeoff

Extreme small plane landing on a ship at sea - and subsequent takeoff

And subsequent takeoff from the deck with a Foxbat A22 aircraft built by Aeroprakt. With footage of six cameras including inside the aircraft. Whilst filming a plane flying close to a cargo ship that already had the nickname "aircraft carrier" due to its unique features, the "just in case something goes wrong" flat area for emergency landings just looks too good, so I cannot restrain myself and get away with landing on the moving ship. The ship was empty and very bow high which is not that visible in the video due to the camera angles, that created annoying low level turbulence and an untidy landing. Tom and Aalbert save the day by courageously helping me to take off, as the deck was slippery with salt spray. I won't do it again unless an aircraft carrier would invite me (please do !). But it worked - thanks to an amazing aircraft, the STOL Aeroprakt Foxbat A22. The ship was sailing at 9 knots speed over ground, the true windspeed was 14 knots, combined just under the full flap stall speed with just myself in the plane and full long range fueltanks. Thanks everyone for the help ! The ship is a 3,500 tonne multipurpose vessel with a total length 93 metres, deck in front of bridge 60 metres x 15 metres. The ship, due to its unique design, has twice the deck space and hold space of conventional ships of the same tonnage. It is designed for volume, not for weight. Oct 13. PS after the ship docked a few days later in Portugal its crew sent footage from more cameras by USB stick - here that video: http://youtu.be/BcQLa_25PkU. That is also better edited than the first video (sorry ... windows live moviemaker now replaced by better editing software plus I whacked the video together in just an hour on the laptop whilst travelling :-)

Subscribe to SailingNewsTV: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thesailingnewstv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnewstv.france Twitter: https://twitter.com/sailingnewstv The America's Cup is a trophy awarded to the winner of the America's Cup match races between two sailing yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America's Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. The America's Cup is the oldest active trophy in international sport.[1] The trophy was originally awarded in 1851 by the Royal Yacht Squadron for a race around the Isle of Wight in England, which was won by the schoonerAmerica. The trophy was renamed the America's Cup after the yacht and was donated to the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) under the terms of the Deed of Gift, which made the cup available for perpetual international competition. Any yacht club that meets the requirements specified in the Deed of Gift has the right to challenge the yacht club that holds the Cup. If the challenging club wins the match, it gains stewardship of the cup. The history and prestige associated with the America's Cup attracts not only the world's top sailors and yacht designers but also the involvement of wealthy entrepreneurs and sponsors. It is a test not only of sailing skill and boat and sail design, but also of fund-raising and management skills. The 2013 America's Cup will be raced in AC72 wing-sail catamarans, and will take place in San Francisco, California . SailingNews TV is the N°1 yachting and sailing channel. We filmed several yachts, including the 157ft SuperYacht "C2", owned by Ronald Perelman.. Billionaire investor and philanthropist with holdings in Revlon Group of womens cosmetics, and AM General which is the company known for the Hummer and Humvee utility vehicles. At 82m in length, "VENUS" was the direct brain child of the late Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple for many years. Jointly designed with Philippe Starck, the yacht elegantly boasts pure simplicity in line with Steve Job's desire to design private, quiet places that provided the Zen like atmosphere that he preferred. Steve was once quoted as saying, "I've tried to be inspired by the Asian idea that emptiness is more important than fullness"... Hence the famous transparent chair he designed in 1998 called "The Marie" that he believed to be an "almost perfect object", just as his idea to bring "VENUS" to life as the Elegance of Minimal. Unfortunately, Steve Jobs passed away before ever getting to see his final masterpiece come to life, but the family brought the project to completion and now "VENUS" roams the Earth in Steve's memory with a fixed crew of 22 onboard.
