(Sept. 15) A United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket will launch NASA's ICESat-2 satellite to measure ice sheet elevation and ice sheet thickness changes linked to climate change, along with measurements of Earth's vegetation biomass. It will lift off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 8:46-9:26 a.m. EDT (5:46-6:26 a.m. PDT; 1246-1326 GMT).
(Sept. 26) A United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket will launch a classified spy satellite (NROL-71) for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
(Sept. 28) A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch the SAOCOM 1A satellite for CONAE, Argentina's space agency, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
(Oct. 4) NASA astronauts Andrew Feustel and Ricky Arnold and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev will undock their Soyuz MS-08 spacecraft from the International Space Station and land in Kazakhstan.
(Oct. 9) The Draconid meter shower will peak before dawn on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
(Nov. 16) A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch a Dragon cargo spacecraft from Cape Canaveral, Florida for a cargo delivery mission to the International Space Station.

It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010. The rover completed its planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that resulted in higher power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function effectively over twenty times longer than NASA planners expected following mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features. Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol prime mission) were published in a special issue of the journal Science. On May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was not the first of the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based theoretical and practical simulations, and finally programming the rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to free itself. These efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA officials announced that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its location in soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research from its current location. The rover continued in a stationary science platform role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the Memorial Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV. Hope you enjoyed it!

Oscar wants to know: "What would be the easiest proof that the Earth isn’t flat, that I could come back with whenever I get challenged on this issue?" Thaller sets the record straight. That’s a hard thing for me to even start talking about because there are so many proofs that the Earth is round, it’s difficult to know where to start. And it’s not okay to think that the Earth is flat. This is not a viable argument. I have friends who have been on the International Space Station, they have orbited the Earth once every 90 minutes; I've had personal experience with people who have been up in space and can see with their own eyes that the Earth is round. And of course, we‘ve taken all of these amazing pictures from space; they’re so beautiful, all those pictures of the Earth. So I don’t really know what’s going on right now with this 'Earth is flat' thing, but I will tell you that this is one of the things I really enjoyed teaching my own astronomy class about because there are proofs all around you. It is not difficult to know that the Earth is round. In fact, people have known of this for way more than 2,000 years. The ancient Greeks actually had a number of really elegant, wonderful proofs that the earth was a sphere. So let’s start from the simple to the slightly more complicated. One of the things you can see yourself, with a pair of binoculars, is if you actually go out to a lake and there are boats on that lake, the farther away a boat is the more the bottom of the boat will disappear, and you’ll basically just see the mast of the boat. And as a boat goes farther and farther away the last thing you will see is the very top of the mast of that boat, and that’s because the boat is actually going over the horizon that’s curved—and that means that as it goes farther and farther away you see less and less of the bottom of it, and more of the top of that. You can see that with binoculars by an ocean, by a lake, it’s really easy. That wouldn’t happen if the Earth were flat—you would simply see the boat getting smaller and smaller and smaller as it went farther away, but you’d be able to see the whole thing with the same proportions. Now, another way that you can tell that we’re on a sphere is to think about how there’s something called the tropics on the Earth, and the tropics are places near the equator of the earth were sometimes the sun is overhead in the sky. This was actually something that the Greeks used, not only to prove that the Earth was round about 2000 years ago, but they actually measured the circumference of the Earth, accurate to within just a couple percent. 2,000 years ago we’ve known that the Earth was round. There was a really brilliant Greek scientist called Eratosthenes, and Eratosthenes noticed that there was a town called Syene, and on a certain date the sun would actually shine straight down to the bottom of a well. That meant the sun was directly overhead; you could look down a well and see the sun shining back at you. And on the very same date, farther away in the city of Alexandria, that didn’t happen. The sun was not directly overhead, it was a slight angle, and all that Eratosthenes did was he measured the difference in the angle of the sun. It was straight overhead in Syene; in Alexandria it was a little bit less than overhead, and he rationed that that change in angle from one city to another was probably indicative of us being on a curved surface, and you could make all kinds of measurements even between those two cities and see that the angles were different—the sun was at a different place in the sky. Using this, he actually measured the circumference of the Earth, and he got it right 2,000 years ago. So another really simple proof is that on any given date, at different cities and different places around the world, the sun is at different angles in the sky. That wouldn’t happen if the Earth wasn’t round.

A sonda Kaguya foi o passaporte de entrada do Japão no seleto grupo de países que também tinham enviado sondas para a órbita lunar nos anos finais da década de 2000 (EUA, China e Índia). Dados da missão Kaguya: - Data de lançamento: 14 de setembro de 2007. - Local: Tanegashima Space Center (TNSC). - Veículo de lançamento: Foguete H-IIA. - Massa total: 2914 kg. - Parte da massa: 2 pequenos satélites de comunicação, com 50 Kg cada, medindo cada um 1m X 1m X 0,65m. - Inserção em órbita lunar: 03 outubro de 2007. - Órbita operacional: circular e polares, numa altitude de 100 Km. - Final da missão: 10 de junho de 2009. Segue a explicação da Nasa: A fotografia feita pelo Curiosity é uma combinação de dezenas de imagens fotografadas pelo robô e montadas em um mosaico. A última foto é uma montagem de 92 imagens feitas com a câmera, chamada de Mali, que possui uma lente macro (capaz de capturar objetos a uma pequena distância). As fotos são feitas em sequência e, depois, unidas para compor o panorama final. Por isso, não é possível ver o braço mecânico nas imagens, embora a sua sombra apareça sobre o chão. NASA released its first incredible video of our closest look at Saturn yet

On April 26, the Cassini spacecraft flew closer to Saturn than ever before — between the gap that separates the planet from its rings. Since then, Cassini has been transmitting dozens of images of Saturn's surface. Here, NASA has compiled all the images into one, incredible video that reveals exactly what Cassini saw. One of the sights that surprised scientists most was the sharp edges of Saturn's hexagon and its central vortex. Saturn's hexagon is a giant cloud system on Saturn's north pole, and it contains a central vortex. The sharp edges scientists saw in these latest images suggests that the cloud system and its vortex are not mixing with their surroundings. But what's preventing the clouds in the hexagon from mixing with the clouds right next to it is a mystery. This first dive marked the beginning of the end for Cassini. For the last 13 years, Cassini has explored Saturn and its moons. But its time will come to an end this September, when it will enter Saturn's atmosphere and burn up.
