The New York Times reported that on November 29, 1962, a benefit concert called "The American Pageant of the Arts" was to be held with "a cast of 100, including President and Mrs. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Leonard Bernstein (as master of ceremonies), Pablo Casals, Marian Anderson, Van Cliburn, Robert Frost, Fredric March, Benny Goodman, Bob Newhart and a 7-year-old Chinese cellist called Yo-yo Ma, who was brought to the program's attention by Casals." As biographer Jim Whiting noted, "the article was noteworthy in two respects. First, it included Yo-Yo's name in the same sentence as those of two U.S. presidents and eight world-famous performers and writers. Second, Yo-Yo had been identified in a major newspaper for the first time. It would hardly be the last. In the years since then, the New York Times alone has written about him more than 1,000 times."

It could be very easily argued (because it's true) that the music addressed by this lecture was the inevitable result of the evolutionary trajectory of all of Western music . Nevertheless the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg represent a hugely compelling intellectual/artistic achievement that could only have come from true visionary genius . Learning to hear and appreciate the free atonality 1908-1923 and 12 tone music of Schoenberg can and will allow you to hear all of music with fresh phonological ears . This is music beyond the precipice the Tao the Ching where Yang becomes Yin and Yin becomes Yang . It is nothing to fear it can re-illuminate and re-inform your musical world . It is where all of music history was heading . My god don't you want to know? This lecture ends with "The Berg Violin Concerto" ; five posts it took to get to the end . This clip is absolutely sensational: as education, composition and in performance. Glenn Gould was 28 years old here. For the impatient, Gould's performance begins at 5:08, but I strongly encourage you to watch Leonard Bernstein's fascinating introduction. This film originally aired in 1960 on CBS Television as part of its "Ford Presents" series. The entire film in high quality (of which this clip is a small part) was painstakingly hunted down by YouTuber erp65 and his friends. Bernstein is wrong on the internet. Some perspective and gentle disagreement concerning Leonard Bernstein's commentary on Beethoven's musical style, with musical examples from some of YouTube's most talented musicians. Responses and polite contradictions encouraged. This is my longest upload yet - I worked on it for months, hope you enjoy it! Here is the original video that I quote in this video. Bernstein has some interesting things to say about Beethoven, some of which I agree with. Why Not Admit There is a Problem With Math and Music? Dan Formosa at TEDxDrexelU

A unifying theme is the idea that great design requires that we first understand people. This talk is not a class in math or music. It's a discussion about challenges to understanding math and music, topics for which literacy rates are low. Both subjects can alienate us at an early age. Dan poses this as a design problem. The talk was part of a day-long TEDx event hosted by the design department at Drexel University, that carried the theme "Why Not Admit..." The audience consisted of 100 people, mostly design students. Dan's talk is about visual communication (information design) and its effect on learning. In the talk Dan draws from childhood experiences in math and music class. In math class (as with many people) the Pythagorean Theorem was presented as a formula to be memorized, but was never illustrated – something that would have been much more effective. For music, he discusses the difficulties we encounter when deciphering a notation system in which up to 16 keys on a piano are depicted within 5 lines and 4 spaces – a graphic system in which the spatial positions of notes don't map to their acoustic spacing, and sharps and flats need to be interpreted. It's an expert system, and the learning barrier is high. In accordance with the "Why Not Admit..." theme, and the fact that this is a university event for designers, this talk is asking questions, not suggesting answers. It's intended to trigger ideas to improve literacy (and maybe make anyone who has tried and failed in the past feel better about math and music.) Comment, March 16 2018: This is NOT a music class, as some viewers have assumed. It's a discussion about difficulties in understanding math and music, and a critique of the way many of us are taught – with teaching techniques that, at an early age, can make us believe we are bad at math or music. In the discussions of sharps and flats that "don't exist," and the difference between E# and F, Dan is discussing his past grammar-school challenges of connecting notes on the scale to keys on a keyboard. (That "past experience" context was apparent during the talk but may not be clear to everyone when watching the video.) Also, the Nashville number system is shown as an example of a work-around that some musicians are using, not as a proposed replacement for notation.
