3 of German Conductor Kurt Masur's Most Pivotal Moments in History

Описание

Kurt Masur, considered one of the last “old-style maestros,” was a famed German conductor who rebuilt the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and led Leipzig’s Gewandhaus.
His musical prowess was well-documented, and July 13’s Google Doodle commemorated what would have been his 91st birthday.

Outside of his professional acclaim, Masur was involved in major political conflicts throughout his life, including World War II (when he was forced into a German militia), the rise and fall of communist East Germany, and the aftermath of 9/11 while he served as director of the Philharmonic.

Wagner Concert in Leipzig 1988 DDR 3 - Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ('Wach Auf' and Finale)

Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Conducted by Kurt Masur 1988 Fernsehen der DDR Final part of the Leipzig Wagner concert features the greatest 'Wach auf!' I have ever heard, the Rundfunkchor are simply magnificent here and provide a thrilling conclusion to what was a supremely satisfying concert in the GDR. The writer and composer Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) was born in the city of Leipzig in Saxony. The city of his birth paid tribute to one of its most famous sons in 1988, then part of the German Democratic Republic, with an all Wagner concert from the New Gewandhaus concert hall, rebuilt by the GDR government and opened in in 1981. Kurt Masur conducts, with soprano Karan Armstrong and bass-baritone Theo Adam singing excerpts from Tristan und Isolde and Meistersinger, with equally stunning contributions from the Leipzig Radio Choir.

Magnificent Counterpoint in the Finale of Mozart's Jupiter Symphony

Richard Atkinson analyzes the magnificent counterpoint in the finale of Mozart's Jupiter Symphony, no. 41 in C major, K. 551, culminating in the coda, during which 5 of the previously introduced themes are combined at once, in five-part invertible counterpoint. This is a fair use educational commentary that uses excerpts from a recording by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, directed by Sir Neville Marriner.

Mendelssohns - Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor (op. 25) , Yuja Wang, Kurt Masur (Full)

Kurt Masur (direction) Yuja Wang (piano) Verbier Festival Orchestra Mendelssohn piano concerto opus 25 Mendelssohns Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor (op. 25) was written in 1830--1, around the same time as his fourth symphony (Italian), and premiered in Munich in October 1831. He had already written a piano concerto in A minor with string accompaniment (1822) and two concertos with two pianos (1823--4). The three connected movements — Molto allegro con fuoco in G minor Andante in E major Presto—Molto allegro e vivace in G major use several relatively new formal techniques in their brief span — for example, the piano enters very soon after the opening of the first movement, with little of an orchestral tutti to contrast with.[1] The concerto quickly obtained popularity, and contains many sections of improvisation, one of Mendelssohns specialities. ===================== 王羽佳 門德爾松 - 鋼琴協奏曲 庫特·馬祖爾

Kurt Masur - A Life in Music

Kurt Masur - A Life in Music

To celebrate his 80th birthday, Kurt Masur led "his" Gewandhaus Orchestra in a special gala concert in June 2007. For his birthday concert, Masur, currently principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France, chose a varied, celebratory programme with works by composers highlighting his conducting career in the United States, France and Germany. The night progressed with works by Bernstein, Bizet and Brahms and -- as a special present - a song from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, sung by entertainer Harald Schmidt. At Kurt Masur's wish, the popular German TV entertainer, a former church musician, hosted the show, demonstrating his quick-witted humour and general knowledge of all aspects of music. Abounding in energy, alert as ever, Masur has been untiringly lending new impulses to the entire orchestral repertoire. From 1970 until 1996 he did so as Gewandhaus Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, a position that has almost come to be identified with his name. He is still Conductor Laureate of the ensemble; the fact that he chose the orchestra for his birthday celebration expresses his gratitude and respect for the orchestra that accompanied him during momentous and troubled times. Kurt Masur had an eventful life - he was famously swept into politics as a peacemaker when the Berlin Wall was about to fall. He was recently awarded Germany's Great Cross of the Legion of Honour with Star and Ribbon -- the highest state honour given by the Federal Republic. EuroArts joins the round of congratulations with this DVD -- an homage to a great artist and credible humanist.
