Urban Exploration: Exploring Gargantua - Torontos Largest Storm Drain

As far as I know, this is the largest storm trunk sewer in Toronto. Stretching from north of Finch Avenue to the intersection of Bayview Avenue and York Mills Road, the Wilket Creek Storm Trunk Sewer grows to become a round pipe more than 4m in diameter, and then splits into a pair of rectangular concrete ducts of similar dimensions. This size is punctuated by a series of minimalist chambers where ceiling grilles cast light into the drain's enormous spaces and allow water to drain from the flood plain above it.

Sections of this storm trunk sewer were probably installed as early as the 1960s, but the bulk of the work to bury Wilket Creek appears to have been performed around 1970-1972. Initially a flood control project, it became a drain as a result of concerns expressed by neighbouring homeowners about the safety of their children and their properties. It is notable also that a neighbouring stream to the northeast is also called Wilket Creek -- there is said to have been a clerical error in 1960; the original Wilket Creek is the eastern one, while the creek that runs through this drain was previously known as Milne Creek.

Subscribe for more crazy videos! So as you see, I do pretty strange and dangerous things... I don't recommend it but draining is really fun. Here is my small list of advice for those of you who wish to try and also a checklist of the gear and equipment I recommend for all of you. 1. Bring the necessary gear: backpack, flashlights, gloves, etc. 2. Try to always bring a friend. Its safer and is more fun to share the adventure. 3. Consider the risks of what your exploring, it is not a joke. It can be dangerous. 4. Be careful around any wild animals, they can attack. 5. Never explore during a rain storm... flash floods. 6. Bring extra batteries or flashlights. Trust me it sucks having the only flashlight burn out. 7. Always carry food and water... in case you get lost. 8. Always know where the drain entrance is in case you have multiple tunnels. 9. Use skateboards in smaller drains. Its faster and easier. 10. 10 Unusual Abandoned Places in Canada

10 Unusual Abandoned Places in Canada

From abandoned islands, to obscure hidden places, these are 10 UNUSUAL Abandoned Places in Canada Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 10. Cole Island Location - British Columbia 9.Bankhead Location - Alberta 8.The Guild Inn Location - Ontario Locally known as The Guild, this abandoned place was once an impressive hotel in Scarborough Toronto. Since 1914, the property has switched owners many times. It was even used as a Foreign Mission House for the Roman Catholic Church. What's more impressive than the buildings, is the 90 acres around them. The families that owned the property combined many different architectural styles to create gardens that could rival any property in Europe. For a long time everything on the property was abandoned, nowadays, the gardens serve as a great spot for intimate weddings, and there have been major talks about reviving the hotel too. 7.Stanley Park Zoo Location - British Columbia 6.Val Jalbert Location - Quebec. My French is not great; so lets just get it out of the way; Val Jalbert is located in Quebec and it is listed as a ghost town. Its easy to see why with photos like this one. The village sprung to existence because of the successful pulp mill in the area. What is a pulp mill you ask? Its an integral part for the creation of PAPER AND STUFF! You take some wood chips add some magic and then you have FIBERBOARD ! The village was founded in 1901 and by 1929 all the homes in the area were boarded up and everyone was ordered to leave…. In the 1960s the location was transformed into a public park. YAY ! Now everyone can enjoy the nature and check out the homes of the workers that used to work in the mill. 5.Celanese Power House Location - Alberta 4.Grain Elevators Location - Alberta This is not just one site, the countryside of Alberta seems to be littered with dilapidated grain elevators. Like this one in Herronton, a very small town near Calgary. Or this one in Brant. Grain elevators commonly refer to buildings that store grain, but they can also refer to what we see in these pictures, towers containing bucket elevators that load up containers with grain. Locals have tried to preserve as much as they can, and have even started the Alberta Grain Elevator Society ! 3.Camp 30 Location - Ontario 2.Partridge Island Location - New Brunswick This island has quite a long history, located within the city of Saint John, the island was first used as a quarantine station in 1785. It also had a lighthouse and military post on it. During the Irish Potato Famine it is estimated that around 30,000 people passed through the island for processing, with around 1200 actually dying there. And by 1890, 78,000 immigrants passed through the island a year. The most famous part of the island is the Celtic cross dedicated to those who passed on the island. There was a museum near the cross that operated until 1995. Since then, the island has become almost a rite of passage for teenagers in the area. With so much to explore, its easy to see how you can be attracted to the haunting past of the land. 1.Queen of Sidney Location - British Columbia

Tokyo's Flood Tunnel

Tokyo's Flood Tunnel

Tokyo, a city built on the coast, intertwined with water has put in place a flood system you’ll have to see to believe. On this episode we bring you Tokyo’s flood tunnels. Global oceanic city Tokyo has so much water access including cancels and waterways within the city that a grand plan was put in place to protect the city from flooding. There are 8 rivers that run through Tokyo all capable of flooding during a typhoon. In the 1950s - 1960s typhoons flooded and destroyed the low lying old downtown of Tokyo. Based on Tokyo’s geographical location disaster in many forms can strike at any moment. Over 38 sq miles or 100 sq km of the city is below sea level which was made worse by rapid construction in the 1960s and 70s. Water was extracted causing the are around Koto-ku to sink further down 2.2 feet or 70 cm. Tokyo’s annual rainfall of 60 inches or 1530 mm hasn’t changed that much over the years but the pattern in which the rain falls has. In recent decades that rain pours heavy and hard putting people’s homes at risk of flooding. Over 80 years ago an artificial waterway was dug, walled with concrete and armed with gates to control the rate of flow away from east Tokyo. Overtime more gates were added but eventually Tokyo devised an idea to build an enormous structure underground to soak up typhoon flood water at outrageous volumes. This came after the 1991 catastrophic flood that submerged 30,000 homes and left dozens dead. 3 billion dollars and 13 years later the Metropolitan Outer Area Underground Discharge Channel was completed. 5 stories tall this massive chamber is so long it’s length is greater than the height of this building, Fountain Place in Dallas. Outfit with dozens of pillars, each one weighs in over 500 tons. As the rivers start to fill up water is diverted into this surge tank which will then be redirected to the man made river that exits the city. Being the largest of its kind in the world, this surge tank sees water fill up inside 7 to 12 times a year. How this is possible is a 3.7 mile or 6 km network of huge pipes all positioned to take in water when the flow is too high that carries it through the pipes back to the surge tank. 4 Oversized turbines converted from aircraft engines can pump 13,000 cubic gallons or 50 cubic meters of water per second each. All this flood water is pumped into 1 of 5 mega cylinders that spans 20 stories deep into the ground. These tubes are so big the space shuttle could fit inside. Designed to absorb the anticipated water volume of a once in 200 year flood, these cylinders angle the water so that is spins around the outside of the tubes to avoid a crashing impact at the bottom. As water fills up it will be pushed over to the surge tank than out to the main exiting river. All the soil pulled from where the chamber and tanks are place was used to build up and strengthen the riverside dycks. Since its implementation the flood tunnels and chamber have reduced flood damage in Tokyo by 90% which has led to other countries to come up with their own plans to build similar tunnels in their major cities. Exploring an Abandoned Dream Mansion - Ontario Canada

Exploring an Abandoned Dream Mansion - Ontario Canada

I have been to this location 3 times, once in May of 2013 and not a access point could be found, again in April of 2014 and I was very lucky to find an open door. I made a choice to return in June of 2014 just to see how things changed. This video is a combination of 2 visits. You can see the changes that happened in the short time between visits. Such a huge house, with features I have not seen in any regular house. A dance studio, grand staircase and my favorite was the elevator. It appears the house either had some salvaging done or looters took advantage of the imminent demise of this house. And I guess as long as it doesn't end in the trash, I don’t care either way. The property and landscape were clearly cared for and judging by the size of the garage on the back part of the property, I am going to guess they had an bad ass RV. Sadly not a lot of artifacts around for insight into who they people were who owner this places, but judging by all the affluence of this house..they had lots of $$$ Oddly I could not find a lot of info on the owners of this house, but what is very obvious is that it was in the way of “progress”. This house, at some point was someones dream home, and it wasn't that long ago. During the explores you can hear the tractors all around while I walk the outside of the house As of last week, it has been demolished. Jan 2 2016 Update - https://twitter.com/DaaDeeOh/status/683376421767671808 So I have learned that there are MANY conspiracy theorists who like to come up with many reasons why this house is being reno'd and not being demolished. HEre are links to several sites confirming the demo and government ownership. The house is gone, will never stand again. It is now a section of the 407 ETR Toll Highway that crosses the top of Durham Region. BID FOR TENDER - (Who will demo the house all legal like) https://ontariotenders.bravosolution.com/esop/toolkit/opportunity/opportunityDetail.do?opportunityId=24439&_ncp=1451737508816.70745-1 Viewer donbeckham posted this added info for your pleasure... The property is at 6225 Coronation Rd and was owned by Salah Abdelati. It was approximately 4.8 hectares. The Ministry of Transportation initially expropriated approximately 1 hectare of the 4.8 for works associated with the eastern expansion of Highway 407. The parties agreed subsequently that a full buyout was appropriate and they entered into a property purchase agreement pursuant to s. 30 of the Expropriations Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. E. 26 Abdelati subsequently commenced a claim seeking compensation for market value of the subject lands, among other matters, and equivalent reinstatement. Equivalent reinstatement means equivalent accommodation. Section 15 of the Act, which deals with equivalent accommodation states: Upon application therefor, the Board shall, by order, after fixing the market value of lands used for residential purposes of the owner under subsection 14(1), award such additional amount of compensation as, in the opinion of the Board, is necessary to enable the owner to relocate his or her residence in accommodation that is at least equivalent to the accommodation expropriated. R.S.O. 1990, c.E.26, s.15. That's going to be one hell of a house they have to put him in until he can find another "Dream Home". Please end this argument. Exploring a HUGE underground drain network

Exploring a HUGE underground drain network

It's amazing to see what we walk above every day, not knowing what lies beneath. Stumbled upon a HUGE underground drain network in North West England. Spent a good 3 hours underground. Have cut alot of footage where there's nothing particularly of note. Keen to get back and see how far I can get.

PGA Masters Abandoned Golf Course and Abandoned Mansion PGA tiger woods masters 2019 pga tour urbex

PGA Masters Abandoned Golf Course and Abandoned Mansion PGA tiger woods masters 2019 pga tour urbex With the PGA Masters 2019 Golf Championships happening this weekend I thought what better time to post this abandoned golf course and abandoned mansion! The golf course and all surrounding property is now abandoned, closed in 2017 to make way for residential housing. The Abandoned Golf Course had been in existence since the 1920s. It had more than 150 members, and regularly hosted weddings and other functions. The land is vast, surrounded by a river snaking through and around, it was strange to walk though so much large empty and quiet land to get to the clubhouse and the old historic heritage. The golf course greens were overgrown with grass stretching out onto the path build for gold carts.  Inside the clubhouse, vandals have made their way in with spray paint.Across the street in the old mansion, formerly used for wedding receptions and accommodations, was in pristine condition. The vandals had not yet made their way into this beautiful old historic brick mansion! So, this abandoned golf course will never be host to the PGA Masters, and the local golfers will have to drive a bit further to find a place to escape for a day and a round of golf. Stormwater Management & Stormwater Detention Systems | Stormtrap

Stormwater Management & Stormwater Detention Systems | Stormtrap

For more information about Stormwater Management click here: http://stormtrap.com StormTrap: An Engineered Stormwater Management Solution. StormTrap maximizes storage volume while minimizing your project footprint. With StormTrap, you can reduce runoff volume from your project site, protect waterways, maintain water quality, and hold stormwater for harvesting or reuse. With the newly improved patented StormTrap design, your installation will be even more cost effective and efficient compared to traditional systems. Plus, StormTrap comes with a lifetime warranty that is unmatched in the industry and it's available in custom sizes from 1 foot 1 inch to 11 feet 4 inches. The truly amazing aspect of StormTrap comes down to the clock. As you've seen a StormTrap module can be set into position in less than ten minutes. When we slow it down, the systems key advantages become obvious. StormTrap provides the maximum detention volume within the smallest possible footprint. As it's entirely modular, StormTrap can be quickly and easily customized to meet each projects requirements. With less associated construction costs, due to the smaller foot print, StormTrap becomes more efficient, with both space and project funds. Over the past decade, StormTrap systems have been efficiently installed in thousands of projects worldwide, delivering significant immediate and long term saving when compared to other systems. In fact, StormTrap delivers savings across the design, installation, and maintenance phases of every project. The StormTrap engineering team beings each project with saving by delivering a full set of design drawings within 48 hours of obtaining project details. Savings continue because the modular components can be installed quickly and efficiently with traditional construction equipment. And for easy maintenance, StormTrap provides total void space that creates an easily accessible detention system. StormTrap eliminates the need for above ground ponds. Instead the system stores runoff in large underground chambers until the stormwater is released at a controlled rate. This creates more useable land and a safer environment for the public. And, as it's an extremely flexible system, StormTrap can easily be built around existing structures, building foundations, and trees to minimize your project costs and maximize detention volumes. Water quality is vastly improved with StormTrap because the filtration process employs EPA proven bio-retention vegetated filter strips and sand filters. These remove pollutants like phosphorous and heavy metals. Additionally, the StormTrap system has integrated filtration elements that send runoff water through the native soil to efficiently reduce pollutants and contaminants. And, with its oil and water separator, StormTrap eliminates oil, grease, fats, and other hydrocarbons that can cause serious damage to the environment. We'll customize the StormTrap filtration features to target your contamination challenges so that we ensure the perfect fit for you project. We can even customize our sedimentation capabilities to remove the projects specific particle sizes. Together, we'll ensure that streams, rivers and wetlands are preserved. StormTrap installations can remain completely contained and watertight. Or, they can allow efficient stormwater infiltration. For example, we offer infiltration to recharge ground water as well as water harvesting application to collect and reuse stormwater for irrigation or for grey water use inside buildings. StormTrap can also offer low impact development solutions for your job site and can help your project reach lead certification, while it delivers critical efficiencies to your project. StormTrap is also equipped with an impressive manufacturing pedigree. All StormTrap materials are made of high-strength pre-cast concrete produced in steel forms in a controlled environment and manufactured in a facility certified by the National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA). As a result, the cost effective system is extremely strong, low risk, and fully trafficable to HS-20, HS-25, and fire truck traffic loadings. Heavy duty designs are also available. As an additional time and cost savings, StormTrap can be installed with a minimum 6 inch cover. The system will not deflect during construction loading and it will allow for rapid backfill. It also will not suffer creep, which contractors experience with some light-weight systems. Backed by the StormTrap unmatched lifetime warranty, our 100% structurally-independent design provides peace of mind for engineers, owners, and developers. Each system maximizes storage volume while minimizing the project footprint and maintaining water quality, all while saving time and money. With StormTrap, you can control the powerful impact of weather, drop by drop, inch by inch. Rain runoff will follow your command. StormTrap is the water management solution for your projects success. Master the storm with StormTrap.

Mr Christie Factory Toronto Urban Exploration Video Gallery

Mr Christie Factory Toronto Urban Exploration Video Gallery

Urban Exploration: A trip through the now demolished Mr Christie Factory in Toronto, Ontario http://www.freaktography.com/mr-christie-factory-toronto/ On November 1, 2012 it was announced that Mondelēz Canada would be closing the Mr Christie's plant at Lake Shore Boulevard West and Park Lawn in Toronto. This decision would put 550 people be out of work, but rumour had it that the plant would be torn down and replaced by condos. “With the facility's aging infrastructure, and underutilized manufacturing capacity, further investment is not a viable option. Therefore, we have determined it is best to close the facility because it no longer supports our strategy of making the most efficient use of our manufacturing assets.” The 625,000 square-foot factory has been churning out Oreo cookies, Ritz crackers and other snack foods since 1948. Area residents and drivers along the Gardiner Expressway often noticed a sweet smell in the air when cookie production was in full swing. The bakery was shuttered in 2013 and with it, 550 jobs were lost. Immediately, speculation began about the property's future. Would it become high-rises and if so, how many and how fast? The property owner at the time, Mondelez Canada Inc., ambitiously suggested 27 high-rises could be built on the 27-acre property – a proposal that put the Humber Bay Shores neighbourhood and city hall on the defensive. Since then, there has been little movement either in official plans or on the site. But, just recently, demolition workers began taking down the former factory, sparking new discussions about the site's future. Standing in the way of any development for the past four years has been the site's zoning as employment, which the city seems intent on keeping. Mondelez applied to rezone the property, but the city denied it and has been fighting the former owner's appeal at the Ontario Municipal Board. As of January 2018, the site has been entirely demolished and now awaits further clean up and future development. I explored this abandoned factory in January of 2015, here are those photos Check out some of my most popular video uploads...
