Why no aquarium has a great white shark

Why no aquarium has a great white shark

Many have tried to keep a white shark in captivity. Here's why that's so difficult. There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display. Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks. By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean. In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank. Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium's director of husbandry operations, said: "We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards." Check out the video above to learn why white sharks are so difficult to keep in captivity and how the Monterey Bay Aquarium designed a program that could keep them alive. In the late '80s, the Strode family of Marion, North Carolina, became infamous for striking fear in the heart of their town. Their son Duffey, who started preaching at age 5, could be found screaming Bible verses at the top of his lungs on school grounds. His parents eventually decided to homeschool their children after Duffey was suspended from school multiple times and a petition suggesting the family should leave town received nearly 500 signatures, according to The Washington Post. Mendelssohns - Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor (op. 25) , Yuja Wang, Kurt Masur (Full)

Kurt Masur (direction) Yuja Wang (piano) Verbier Festival Orchestra Mendelssohn piano concerto opus 25 Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor (op. 25) was written in 1830--1, around the same time as his fourth symphony ("Italian"), and premiered in Munich in October 1831. He had already written a piano concerto in A minor with string accompaniment (1822) and two concertos with two pianos (1823--4). The three connected movements — Molto allegro con fuoco in G minor Andante in E major Presto—Molto allegro e vivace in G major use several relatively new formal techniques in their brief span — for example, the piano enters very soon after the opening of the first movement, with little of an orchestral tutti to contrast with.[1] The concerto quickly obtained popularity, and contains many sections of improvisation, one of Mendelssohn's specialities. ===================== 王羽佳 門德爾松 - 鋼琴協奏曲 庫特·馬祖爾

Brahms “Ye now are sorrowful”: Robert Eaton, St Paul’s Cathedral 1977 (Barry Rose)

This private recording (courtesy of Barry Rose) was made at a 1977 Sunday evensong in St Paul's Cathedral, London, conducted by Barry Rose, with John Dexter on the organ. The soloist that day was Robert Eaton, who died in the World Trade Centre, New York, on 11th September 2001 - one of the countless victims of the “9/11” attack. A plaque now hanging outside the St Paul's Song School commemorates both this momentous event and Robert's passing, and a Memorial Fund has been set up in his name, to raise money to help children through sport. If you are moved by Robert's singing, you might consider donating to his Fund at http://www.remf.org.uk This anthem is actually a single movement ("Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit") from Johannes Brahms' "A German Requiem" ("Ein deutsches Requiem") Op. 45. Ye now are sorrowful, howbeit ye shall again behold me, And your heart shall be joyful, and your joy no man taketh from you. - [Chorus:] Yea, I will comfort you, as one whom his own mother comforteth. Look upon me; ye know that for a little time labour and sorrow were mine, But at the last I have found comfort.
