Empire Files: Buying a Slave - The Hidden World of US/Philippines Trafficking

Human trafficking is a hidden industry that brings in $150 billion in illegal profits every year. In the United States, tens of thousands are trafficked annually—the biggest clients being major hotel chains and foreign diplomats. The Philippines is one of the largest labor exporters in the world. 6,000 Filipinos—mostly women—leave the country every single day to work, because of mass unemployment and poverty. Tricked by placement agencies, thousands end up living as virtual slaves. Damayan, a New York-based organization led by Filipina domestic workers, is fighting this underground crisis. Abby Martin speaks to several members of the organization about how this exodus of women has devastated a generation of families, and how they are fighting back.

Australian pleads not guilty to child abuse charges at a Philippine court

Australian national, Peter Gerard Scully, enters a not guilty plea to five counts of rape and child abuse, his lawyer says Full story: Australian national, Peter Gerard Scully, entered a not guilty plea to rape and human trafficking charges at a court in the southern Philippines, his lawyer said on Tuesday (June 16). Scully is facing five counts of rape with sexual assault and one count of human trafficking. He stood next to his Filipino partner Carmen Ann Alvarez during the court session, who is also facing the same charges, local media said. "The five rape charges and the trafficking were read to the accused and he pleaded not guilty, so June 25 is the pre-trial. That is the date when the prosecution will present to the court, name to the court, all their witnesses, affidavits, pictures or whatever evidence. After that, then we move to trial," said Alejandro Pallugna, Scully's lawyer. Scully was arrested by Philippine authorities in February after authorities received reports of children being sexually abused inside his rented home in Cagayan De Oro City, local media reported. He was also accused of the murder of a 12-year-old girl, said local media. Pallugna confirmed Scully's pre-trial will begin on June 25.

The amphetamine, known as Captagon, is being increasingly trafficked from Syria to other areas of the Middle East, according to the UN. Captagon has been available since the 1960s and was used to treat hyper-active kids because it improved their concentration. But when taken in large doses by adults the speed-like drug masks feelings of pain, fear and hunger – and crucially makes troops feel they have super-human strength. Rebel fighter Ahmed Thalej told The Times a white powder used by Syrian regime forces turned them "into monsters". He said: "That helps them fight crazily, attack uncovered against strong positions. "They don’t even care about their wounded." Countries bordering Syria have seized millions of Captagon pills, worth hundreds of millions of pounds, in the past year alone. The Jordanian border police recovered two million Captagon pills on Sunday, after killing 12 gunmen in a deadly gun battle on the Syrian border. The country's customs also seized a staggering 16,768,684 Captagon tablets coming from Syria last year. Turkey reported discovering a massive 11million tablets near the Syrian border in November while Lebanon also seized 15 million pills in April and five tonnes in December. The Paris attackers were thought to have necked loads of Captagon pills before savagely slaughtering 130 people in November – because it could dull their human feelings and turn them into killers. The World Health Organisation put the drug on a list of controlled substances in 1986. But the drug is often used throughout the Middle East. The UN office on drugs and crime (UNDOC) said former fighters have given evidence to suggest Captagon is used by all sides of the Syrian conflict – and is making the already brutal civil war much worse. UNDOC official Masoof Karimipor said: "Fighters recount Captagon as making them feel powerful, fearless and invincible. "It’s chemical courage." Former head of the Revolutionary Council in Manbej Imaduldin Hneithel said drug taking was widespread amongst ISIS fighters. The barbaric militants take the drug despite the fact it was banned under the savage death cult’s strict rules. But Mr Karimipour claimed the growth of the illegal wartime drug economy should not come as a surprise as Syria was home to a large pharmaceuticals industry before the war. He said: "If you’re in organised crime, civil war is good for business. "The profit margins are enormous. "Each [Captagon] pill, made for pennies’ worth of chemicals, is sold on the street for dollars five to dollars 20, depending on that what the market will bear." Drugs in war are not new. The Nazis dished out an early speed drug called Pervitin to its troops. Some of Germany's worst atrocities in Eastern Europe and the occupied bits of the Soviet Union were committed by soldiers and SS brigades who were off their chops on speed. According to medical recrods, Adolf Hitler's doctor also used to supply him with cocaine, which he would then snort while making decisions about fighting the war and the fate of Europe's Jews. In the Vietnam War US marines were given amphetamines by the US government to combat tiredness in jungle warfare conditions. But many troops took larger doses than advised – as well as topping it up with other substances bought on the South Vietnamese black market. Historians say many drugged up marines commited war crimes and that this alienated Vietnamese people, driving them to secretly support America's opponents, the Vietcong who went on to win the war.

The Real Sex Traffic (Sex Trafficking Documentary) - Real Stories

The Real Sex Traffic (Sex Trafficking Documentary) - Real Stories

Check out our new website for more incredible documentaries: HD and ad-free. https://goo.gl/LwMcmY An estimated half million women are trafficked annually for the purpose of sexual slavery. They are "exported" to over 50 countries including Britain, Italy, Japan, Germany, Israel, Turkey, China, Kosovo, Canada and the United States. Misunderstood and widely tolerated, sex trafficking has become a multi- billion dollar underground industry. According to the International Herald Tribune, human trafficking is the fastest growing form of organized crime in Eastern Europe. Kidnapped and/or lured by those who prey on their dreams, their poverty, and their naiveté, Eastern European women are trafficked to foreign lands -- often with falsified visas -- where they become modern day sex slaves. Upon arrival, they are sold to pimps, drugged, terrorized, caged in brothels and raped repeatedly. For these women and young girls, there is no life, no liberty and no chance for a happy and meaningful future. The Real Sex Traffic takes us to “ground zero” of the sex trade - Moldova and Ukraine - where traffickers effortlessly find vulnerable women desperate to go abroad and earn some money. The film focuses on the remarkable story of Viorel, a Ukrainian man on a mission to find his pregnant, trafficked wife in Turkey. Our hidden cameras follow Viorel as he travels to Turkey; his only lead the telephone number of the pimp who, he believes, has Katia in his possession. To secure his wife’s release, after days of desperate efforts, Viorel poses as a trafficker and sets out to buy his wife back. We follow Viorel to his meeting with Katia’s captor and from there into the world of trafficked women. Interwoven with Viorel’s story, we meet other victims, traffickers and the families that have been torn apart by the trade in human flesh. This film is the first film to have a convicted trafficker talk openly about how trafficking works, and how women are coerced into sexual slavery. With hidden cameras, we watch as traffickers move people across borders with impunity and expose how easy it is to purchase a modern day sex slave. Sex Traffic also takes us to England and Canada where we find victims who tell harrowing tales of being repeatedly sold from country to country. Hiding her identity to protect her life, “Natasha” shares her heart wrenching story of being bought and sold from Romania to Italy and on to Germany and Belgium. Her final stop was Britain where she was put to work in a north London sauna. “Natasha” was finally freed from her nightmare in a police raid, a year after her abduction. For her part, “Eva” thought she was getting a job as a nanny in Toronto until her handlers took her from the airport to a strip club and forced her to work off her “debt”, i.e., her purchase price, before she could be set free. Sex Traffic explores the global trafficking problem through personal stories and unfettered access to traffickers and the people they use as human chattel. The documentary captures both the investigative story and the human story behind the headlines. From the villages of Moldova and Ukraine, to underground brothels and discotheques, we witness firsthand the brutal world of white sex slavery. Want to watch more full-length Documentaries? PHILIPPINES: CHILD RAPIST ECHEGARAY EXECUTION (3)

PHILIPPINES: CHILD RAPIST ECHEGARAY EXECUTION (3)

Eng/Taga/Nat Time is running out for convicted child rapist Leo Echegaray, scheduled for execution in the Philippines later on Friday. Echegaray is slated to become the first person executed in the Philippines for 23 years, following the restoration of the death penalty. Only President Joseph Estrada now has the power to save Echegaray from execution. But so far the president has refused to hear any appeal on Echegaray's behalf. A look of resignation clouded Leo Echegaray's face as he was escorted out of the prison building at dawn on Friday. He bowed his head in front of the crush of photographers and clutched a Bible as prison guards led him to the execution chamber. The 38-year-old house painter faces the death penalty for repeatedly raping his 10 year-old step daughter in 1994. Echegaray has always maintained his innocence and says he is dying for a crime that he did not commit. Echegaray is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 3 p-m local time (0700gmt) on Friday - the first execution to take place in the Philippines in 23 years. In a message he taped for his wife on February 2, Echegaray spoke of his pending execution as an end to his troubles. SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog) "Hopefully our problems will be over...this February 5, we will be in a dark place, but February 6 hopefully our lives will get better. Maybe that will be the start of a better life for us." SUPER CAPTION: Leo Echegaray's taped message to his wife Echegaray met Zenaida after his conviction and married her inside the prison last December. She has proved one of his most stalwart defenders, tirelessly lobbying for clemency for her husband. SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog)) "Life here on death row was difficult, but it became colorful when you came. You gave me the light through the dark road I was taking." SUPER CAPTION: Leo Echegaray's taped message to his wife Awaiting her husband's execution, Zenaida had bitter words for President Joseph Estrada, who has refused appeals to grant a stay in execution. SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog) "In my condition, I cannot accept it. It will be extremely painful for me if Leo dies. So if it happens, don't worry Mr. President, two lives will be lost." SUPER CAPTION: Zenaida Echegaray, wife of Leo Echegaray Yesterday, Estrada ordered prison officials to cut a hotline linking the palace and the death chamber. The line was installed to enable the president to halt the execution if he decided on a last-minute reprieve. The execution has sharply divided this mostly Roman Catholic nation. Estrada has been at the forefront of the push to bring back execution since its 1987 abolition, saying a deterrent was needed to quell the rise in violent crime. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Today's execution is proof of the government's determination to maintain law and order. Let Mr Echegaray's death serve as a strong warning against the criminal elements. In my administration we will prove that crime doesn't pay. I would like to stress is not poverty related but an act of bestiality which deserves the steepest penalty under the law." SUPER CAPTION: Joseph Estrada, Philippines President Estrada's views were echoed by pro-death penalty advocates who held a vigil Thursday night within the prison compound. They held up placards depicting the faces of crime victims and calling for justice to be done. Inside the prison chapel, anti-death penalty groups prayed as their hopes of clemency faded. But even if they fail to halt Echegaray's execution, the campaigners say they will continue their efforts to abolish the capital punishment. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Our hope at this point that eventually people will see the madness of the penalty and sooner or later, the penalty will be abolished You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/3e24fef6a0a2c7e2c4b121d6c0dfe837 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork
