The disc features one song from every year of Schubert's creative life, performed by a variety of distinguished artists. http://www.oxfordlieder.co.uk/schubert-project http://www.stonerecords.co.uk http://pangolinsteatime.com Translation: The Elfking Who rides so late through the windy night? It is the father and his child. He holds the boy, Warm and safe. Son, why do you hide your face in fear? Father, do you not see the Elfking? With his crown and train? Son, it's just the mist. Come with me, lovely child We'll play games There are flowers on the beach and My mother has golden clothes Father, can't you hear What the Elfking is promising me? Be calm, my boy -- It's only the wind in the leaves. Lovely boy, will you come with me? My daughters will wait on you My daughters will sing and dance for you and rock you to sleep. Father, do you not see The Elfking's daughters there? Son, it's the old willows shining In the moonlight. I love you -- I'm aroused by your beautiful form And if you won't come, I will take you by force Father, father, he has grabbed me. The Elfking has hurt me. The father shudders. He rides fast, the groaning boy in his arms, Anxious, he reaches the farm. In his arms, the boy is dead. (Translation by Daniel Norman)

Antonio Vivaldi - The Four Seasons

Antonio Vivaldi - The Four Seasons

Antonio Vivaldi The Four Seasons Full HD (Italian: Le quattro stagioni) is a set of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi Full Concert. Composed in 1723, The Four Seasons is Vivaldi's best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces of Baroque music. The texture of each concerto is varied, each resembling its respective season. For example, "Winter" is peppered with silvery pizzicato notes from the high strings, calling to mind icy rain, whereas "Summer" evokes a thunderstorm in its final movement, which is why the movement is often dubbed "Storm." The concertos were first published in 1725 as part of a set of twelve concerti, Vivaldi's Op. 8, entitled Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (The Contest between Harmony and Invention). The first four concertos were designated Le quattro stagioni, each being named after a season. Each one is in three movements, with a slow movement between two faster ones. At the time of writing The Four Seasons, the modern solo form of the concerto had not yet been defined (typically a solo instrument and accompanying orchestra). Vivaldi's original arrangement for solo violin with string quartet and basso continuo helped to define the form. Richard Wagner - Lohengrin - Prelude

Richard Wagner - Lohengrin - Prelude

Lohengrin is a romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition. The opera has proved inspirational towards other works of art. Among those deeply moved by the fairy-tale opera was the young King Ludwig II of Bavaria. 'Der Märchenkönig' ('The Fairy-tale King') as he was dubbed later built his ideal fairy-tale castle and dubbed it "New Swan Stone," or "Neuschwanstein", after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig's patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity to compose, build a theatre for, and stage his epic cycle, the Ring of the Nibelung. The most popular and recognizable part of the opera is the Bridal Chorus, better known as "Here Comes the Bride", often played as a processional at weddings in the West. The first production of Lohengrin was in Weimar, Germany on 28 August 1850 at the Staatskapelle Weimar under the direction of Franz Liszt, a close friend and early supporter of Wagner. Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, Leonard Bernstein, Orchestre National de France

1st movement - "Day Dreams -- Passions" 00:00 2nd movement - "A Ball" 13:40 3rd movement - "Scene in the Countryside" 20:30 4th movement - "March to the Scaffold" 37:30 5th movement - "Dream of a Witches' Sabbath" 42:30 Berlioz's own descriptive rogramme note from 1845 on the Symphonie fantastique (English translation by Michael Austin): The composer's intention has been to develop various episodes in the life of an artist, in so far as they lend themselves to musical treatment. As the work cannot rely on the assistance of speech, the plan of the instrumental drama needs to be set out in advance. The following programme* must therefore be considered as the spoken text of an opera, which serves to introduce musical movements and to motivate their character and expression. *This programme should be distributed to the audience at concerts where this symphony is included, as it is indispensable for a complete understanding of the dramatic plan of the work. [HB] Part one Daydreams, passions The author imagines that a young musician, afflicted by the sickness of spirit which a famous writer has called the vagueness of passions (le vague des passions), sees for the first time a woman who unites all the charms of the ideal person his imagination was dreaming of, and falls desperately in love with her. By a strange anomaly, the beloved image never presents itself to the artist's mind without being associated with a musical idea, in which he recognises a certain quality of passion, but endowed with the nobility and shyness which he credits to the object of his love. This melodic image and its model keep haunting him ceaselessly like a double idée fixe. This explains the constant recurrence in all the movements of the symphony of the melody which launches the first allegro. The transitions from this state of dreamy melancholy, interrupted by occasional upsurges of aimless joy, to delirious passion, with its outbursts of fury and jealousy, its returns of tenderness, its tears, its religious consolations -- all this forms the subject of the first movement. Part two A ball The artist finds himself in the most diverse situations in life, in the tumult of a festive party, in the peaceful contemplation of the beautiful sights of nature, yet everywhere, whether in town or in the countryside, the beloved image keeps haunting him and throws his spirit into confusion. Part three Scene in the countryside One evening in the countryside he hears two shepherds in the distance dialoguing with their 'ranz des vaches'; this pastoral duet, the setting, the gentle rustling of the trees in the wind, some causes for hope that he has recently conceived, all conspire to restore to his heart an unaccustomed feeling of calm and to give to his thoughts a happier colouring. He broods on his loneliness, and hopes that soon he will no longer be on his own... But what if she betrayed him!... This mingled hope and fear, these ideas of happiness, disturbed by dark premonitions, form the subject of the adagio. At the end one of the shepherds resumes his 'ranz des vaches'; the other one no longer answers. Distant sound of thunder... solitude... silence... Part four March to the scaffold Convinced that his love is spurned, the artist poisons himself with opium. The dose of narcotic, while too weak to cause his death, plunges him into a heavy sleep accompanied by the strangest of visions. He dreams that he has killed his beloved, that he is condemned, led to the scaffold and is witnessing his own execution. The procession advances to the sound of a march that is sometimes sombre and wild, and sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a dull sound of heavy footsteps follows without transition the loudest outbursts. At the end of the march, the first four bars of the idée fixe reappear like a final thought of love interrupted by the fatal blow. Part five Dream of a witches' sabbath He sees himself at a witches' sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of shades, sorcerers and monsters of every kind who have come together for his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, outbursts of laughter; distant shouts which seem to be answered by more shouts. The beloved melody appears once more, but has now lost its noble and shy character; it is now no more than a vulgar dance tune, trivial and grotesque: it is she who is coming to the sabbath... Roar of delight at her arrival... She joins the diabolical orgy... The funeral knell tolls, burlesque parody of the Dies irae,** the dance of the witches. The dance of the witches combined with the Dies irae. **A hymn sung in funeral ceremonies in the Catholic Church. [HB]

Beethoven, Sinfonía Nº 3

Beethoven, Sinfonía Nº 3 "Heroica". Wiener Philharmoniker, Christian Thielemann
