Inside Flex—Amazon's Army Of Everyday Delivery People (HBO)

Inside Flex—Amazon's Army Of Everyday Delivery People (HBO)

Amazon just had its best Prime day ever. The company sold more than 100 million products over a 36-hour period, bragging in a press release that it was the “biggest shopping event in Amazon history.” But a massive shopping event like Prime Day is only in possible in part because of Amazon’s Flex program, which recruits everyday people to deliver Amazon packages for a modest wage. That's because the most expensive part of delivering a package is getting it from a local warehouse to a customer's doorstep. Amazon’s Flex program helps reduce that cost by hiring delivery drivers as independent contractors. VICE News followed a married couple in Phoenix, AZ, who use Flex as their primary source of income. “[Flex] saved our lives,” Beverly Karpinski, 64, told VICE News. “For three months we had no income except for my husband’s social security check, and one day I was on Craigslist and I saw Amazon was hiring independent delivery drivers.” Karpinski and her husband, Ed, both signed up for Flex and have been delivering packages for more than a year. In Arizona, the Karpinski’s make about $18 an hour before expenses. You don’t need any qualifications to drive for Flex: just pass a background check and have a valid driver's license. Due to the driver’s independent contractor status, Amazon doesn’t provide any benefits like healthcare or paid time off. Amazon says Flex drivers across the country make $18-$25 an hour, but that doesn’t include gas or car maintenance. Amazon declined to provide any details about how many Flex drivers Amazon hires, or how many fulfillment centers across the country support Flex, but an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company leverages its malleable Flex workforce in order to compensate for Prime Day. The spokesperson also confirmed that the delivery route given to Flex drivers is generated by an Amazon algorithm. Amazon's 14 Leadership Principles via Jeff Bezos

Amazon's 14 Leadership Principles via Jeff Bezos

Are you looking for a job? If you're watching this video, you're part of a small percentage of people that care about the values and principles of their employer; this is a well known success factor in employee performance and tenure. However, you're competing with many others that apply in bulk for the same position; so how do you capitalize on your time investment? Be proactive! when applying And during interviews, be sure to let recruiters and hiring managers know that you watched this! --- 1. Customer obsession: start with the customer and work backwards; work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust; pay attention to competitors, but keep obsessing over customers 2. Ownership: think like an owner, long term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results; act on behalf of the entire company, not just for your own team; never say “that’s not my job" 3. Invent and simplify: expect and require innovation and invention from your team and always find ways to simplify; be externally aware, always look for new ideas from everywhere, and don’t be limited by “not invented here" 4. Leaders are right a lot 1:52 : you have strong judgment and good instincts; you seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm your beliefs 5. Frugality 3:50 : accomplish more with less. Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency and invention. There are no extra points for growing headcount, budget size or fixed expense 6. Hire and develop the best 5:01 : raise the performance bar with every hire and promotion; recognize exceptional talent, and willingly move them throughout the organization; develop leaders and take seriously your role in coaching others 7. Earn trust 5:05 : listen attentively, speak candidly, and treat others respectfully. Be vocally self-critical, even when doing so is awkward or embarrassing; leaders do not believe their or their team’s body odor smells of perfume; benchmark yourself and your team against the best. 8. Insist on the highest standards 7:42 : you have relentlessly high standards - many may think these standards are unreasonably high; you are continually raising the bar and driving your team to deliver high quality products, services and processes; defects do not get sent down the line and problems are fixed so they stay fixed 9. Bias for action 11:34 : speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking. 10. Learn and be curious 11:34 : you are never done learning and you always seek to improve; you are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them 11. Have backbone. Disagree and commit 13:26 : respectfully challenge decisions when you disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting; have conviction and be tenacious; do not compromise for the sake of social cohesion; once a decision is determined, commit to it. 12. Dive deep 13:26 : operate at all levels, stay connected to the details, audit frequently, and be skeptical when metrics and anecdote differ. No task is beneath you. 13. Think big 16:04 : thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. Think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers. 14. Deliver results 16:04 : focus on the key inputs for your business and deliver with the right quality and in a timely fashion; despite setbacks, rise to the occasion and never settle

Booster Fuels Wants To Be The Amazon Prime Of Gasoline

Booster Fuels Wants To Be The Amazon Prime Of Gasoline

Booster Fuels is an on-demand gasoline delivery company. Companies with big parking lots partner with Booster so you can park in their lots, leave your fuel door open, tell the app you want some gas and go about your day. If Booster Fuels CEO Frank Mycroft has his way, gas stations will one day be obsolete. His start-up, founded in 2014, is filling up cars in parking lots, so drivers don't have to wait in lines or make extra trips. Booster is now operating across twenty U.S. cities, and in the parking lots of at least 300 different companies, Mycroft said. The service is available in Orange County, the San Francisco Bay Area and the Dallas - Fort Worth region. Booster generates $180,000 in revenue daily, according to Mycroft, and has already delivered fuel more than 1 million times to customer cars. To make delivery possible, Booster designed a tanker truck that can navigate the tight lanes of parking lots. The trucks can both load up fuel and deliver it, cutting out the costs of the middle man and allowing the start-up to procure fuel wholesale from providers like Exxon and Shell. Facebook, PayPal, Pepsi and others offer the service for employees. They give the company access to their employee parking lots, and help make sure their workers know about the service. » Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Amazon Wants to Pay You $300,000 Per Year to Delivery Amazon Packages

Amazon Wants to Pay You $300,000 Per Year to Delivery Amazon Packages

Have you heard about this new Amazon Program? Amazon is enlisting the public to start a delivery business to deliver Amazon packages. About two weeks ago Amazon rolled out a new program for "Delivery Service Partners" or (DSP's). For $10,000 Amazon will help you start a business operating a fleet of 20 Amazon delivery vehicles and employing 100 people. You'll deliver Amazon Prime packages. This program just recently opened up. Starting a business for 10K is pretty attractive, as there's not many "real businesses" with equipment that you can get started for 10k. Initially this kind of peaked my interest, however knowing how Amazon is and how they operate I have a feeling the fleet owners in the end are not going to wind up making all that much money. In this video we break down what this program is, how it works, and with the limited information we have we kind of break down how realistic that $300,000 per year claim is. ********************************** Business Inquiries, Sponsor a Video, or Just Wanna Say What's Up... Amazon Disrupts The Last Mile!

Amazon Disrupts The Last Mile!

Today, I want to tell you a story. It’s about a sleeping giant that wakes up very hungry and decides to eat its partner. But, unlike the praying mantis, there won’t even be any sex before death… We live in an age of disruptive technology. Where Uber can become the world’s biggest taxi company without owning any cars and Airbnb can become the world’s biggest hotel chain without owning any bricks and mortar. Unless you’ve been living in a hermetically sealed underground bunker these last five years, you’ll know that the only growth area in shopping these days is online. Who’d ever have imagined that people would buy shoes and clothes based on minute images on a screen without trying them on? What I find amazing is that people think it’s less hassle to order three pairs of shoes, try them all on and send two back than it is just to go to the shoe shop in the first place. And of course it creates a whole new set of demands on the logistics that deliver and collect all these packages. And that’s the biggest issue for the retailer. It all boils down to the customer experience. However fancy your website, however slick your one click check out might be, it can all fall apart if the post office or the courier screws up the delivery. As happened to Amazon last Christmas. It’s one thing having a late delivery on something you’ve ordered for yourself. But what if it’s a present for someone you love? The only good Christmas present is one that’s there to be opened on Christmas morning. If it arrives three days late, she may already have sent the dear John text that kills your beautiful relationship. Not the customer experience Amazon were hoping to give you. So they've taken matters into their own hands. Amazon’s massive distribution centres are already like something out of a sci-fi movie. They’ve got a hundred and twenty of these mega centres filled with orange Kiva robots that long ago replaced human pickers and packers. But now Amazon are taking their ownership of the logistics process to the last mile, all the way to your front door. Their big, hairy audacious goal? Same day delivery. Maybe even one hour delivery. That’s what you call instant gratification. They’ve already disrupted cloud computing with Amazon Web Services. If you’re a shareholder in Royal Mail, UPS or Fedex, it’s time to start worrying. The cost of deliveries is rising faster than sales, causing Amazon to lose one point two billion pounds on distribution in their most recent quarter. They’ve launched Prime Now in twenty cities including London, with new delivery hubs to support them. They’ve hired a network of freelance delivery drivers in the Amazon Flex programme while in America they’ve ordered thousands of truck trailers to take goods from the main distribution centres to smaller local sorting offices. Will customers pay enough for rapid delivery to cover all these new costs? Or, like me, would they rather wait a few days and get free delivery? Is this a real attempt by Amazon to take over from the big courier companies? Or just a way of flexing their muscles to get faster service and lower prices? Amazon deliveries already account for four per cent of UPS’s overall business, around two billion dollars worth of revenue. I imagine you get your own account manager when you spend that much. But I imagine the meetings might be getting a little bit tetchy when UPS realise that their biggest customer is starting to steal their lunch. If you’re betting on the existing players reaping all the benefits of delivering the online shopping boom, be very careful out there!
