The title "Années de pèlerinage" refers to the Bildungsroman "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and there are numerous other literary allusions throughout the suite. Liszt wrote the following introduction to all three "Années de pèlerinage" suites: "Having recently travelled to many new countries, through different settings and places consecrated by history and poetry; having felt that the phenomena of nature and their attendant sights did not pass before my eyes as pointless images but stirred deep emotions in my soul, and that between us a vague but immediate relationship had established itself, an undefined but real rapport, an inexplicable but undeniable communication, I have tried to portray in music a few of my strongest sensations and most lively impressions." Most movements are prefaced by captions: I. Chapelle de Guillaume Tell - "All for one - one for all." II. Au lac de Wallenstadt - "Thy contrasted lake / With the wild world I dwell in is a thing / Which warns me, with its stillness, to forsake / Earth's troubled waters for a purer spring." (Canto 3 LXVIII - CV of Byron's "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage") IV. Au bord d'une source - "In the whispering coolness begins young nature's play." (from Schiller) V. Orage - "But where of ye, O tempests! is the goal? / Are ye like those within the human breast? / Or do ye find, at length, like eagles, some high nest?" (Canto 3 LXVIII - CV of "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage") VI. Vallée d'Obermann - "Could I embody and unbosom now / That which is most within me,--could I wreak / My thoughts upon expression, and thus throw / Soul--heart--mind--passions--feelings--strong or weak-- / All that I would have sought, and all I seek, / Bear, know, feel--and yet breathe--into one word, / And that one word were Lightning, I would speak; / But as it is, I live and die unheard, / With a most voiceless thought, sheathing it as a sword." A lovely recording, featuring playing of incredible subtlety and colour, and generally an excellent showcase of the kind of joyous virtuosity that Trifonov is known for. Every piece here is elevated by the playing: The dolorous arcs of No.1, the fulsome, evasive waywardness of No.2, the delicate, No.3, the firefly sketch that is No.4, the melting, multihued warmth of No.5, or rapid-fire bedazzling textures of No.6. Franz Liszt composed his "Orpheus" in 1853-4, numbering it No. 4 in his cycle of 12 symphonic poems written during his time in Weimar, Germany. It was first performed on February 16, 1854, conducted by the composer, as an introduction to the first Weimar performance of Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera "Orfeo ed Euridice". "Orpheus" is one of four symphonic poems Liszt composed as character sketches of men of creative genius, heroism or legend. (The other three poems are Tasso, Prometheus and Mazeppa.) In his preface Liszt describes an Etruscan vase depicting Orpheus, then extols civilizing effect on humanity. This reference to the ennobling effect of Orpheus and his art may have been derived from the Orpheus depicted by the Lyon philosopher Pierre-Simon Ballanche in "Orphée" in 1829. "Orpheus" is not a long work and takes the form of a gradual crescendo followed by a quiet ending which returns to the mood of the opening. Unlike many of Liszt's other symphonic poems, the music here remains largely contemplative. For this reason, it became a favorite piece of Liszt's son-in-law, the composer Richard Wagner. Formally, "Orpheus" is a modified sonata form with a secondary key area containing two themes. The second theme lacks the energy of the first, remaining a static motif hovering over oscillating major and minor harmonies. Nevertheless, it contains an especially poignant quality. This theme is presented by various solo instruments to a primarily harp accompaniment. The orchestration, together with the style, suggests an interpretation of this theme as Orpheus' voice. The ethereal, chromatic ascent in the final bars attenuates any decisive closure that could be expected from a more conventional harmonic resolution. Combined with the closing theme of the second group, this ends the work as a cryptic vision which recalls the final moments of Ballanche's story. There the story's narrator, Thamyris, witnesses Orpheus disappearing into the clouds, leaving mankind the task of developing his teachings of civilisation. Franz Liszt composed his Prometheus in 1850, numbering it No. 5 in his cycle of symphonic poems when he revised it in 1855. The work is based on the Greek myth, Prometheus. In 1850, Franz Liszt composed an overture and eight choruses with orchestra accompaniment for Johann Gottfried Herder's Der entfesselte Prometheus (Prometheus Unbound), a mythological work of thirteen scenes meant as a sequel to Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound. This was to be performed for the Herder Festival scheduled for August of that year in Weimar. Liszt gave indications for the orchestration, and from these notes Liszt's helper Joachim Raff produced a score which was used in the first performance. This concert commemorated the unveiling of a monument to Herder on August 24, 1850. In 1855 Liszt revised both the overture and the choruses, which resulted in the expansion of the overture to a symphonic poem and the choruses to a concert stage work. The work that was composed to illustrate the imprisonment, pain, hope, and the final triumph of Prometheus turned out to be incomprehensible to the contemporary public due to the many dissonances that accompany the piece. The choral parts ended too soon and were unusable, while the overture acquired own life thanks to the multiple intentional executions and direction from Hans von Bülow. Horror show thrills did not originate in Hollywood -- in fact, the "dream" or "nightmare factory" of movie production was anticipated in its most lurid artifacts by nineteenth and early twentieth century opera. Pacts with the devil, the undead, demoniac possession, the strutting Devil himself were part and parcel of early Romanticism, from the lofty philosophical heights of Goethe's Faust (which gave rise to a number of musical works quite apart from the evergreen of Gounod's Faust, Boïto's Mefistofele, and Mahler's "Symphony of a Thousand") to Weber's classic Der Freischütz, premiered in 1821, with its stunning Wolf's Glen scene, and Marschner's Der Vampyr in 1828, which influenced the young Wagner. All are possessed by demon-crossed lovers and rife with plot complications turning up again every season in spates of predictable B movies to gorge an apparently inexhaustible appetite. Eugène Scribe, that master of the operatic hot property, cobbled together a libretto potpourri of the genre for the wealthy Meyerbeer who composed the most phenomenally successful operatic spectacle of the century, the first "grand" opera, Robert le diable, premiered at the Opéra on November 22, 1831, to such earth-shaking success that it is credited with making the fortune of that moribund institution. Robert, son of the devil Bertram by a mortal woman, is led into temptation by his father at every turn, though ultimately saved by the love of a good woman (a theme very dear to Wagner). The third act features an epitome of poor taste that thrilled generations of opera-goers as Bertram summons the ghosts of nuns who violated their vows to dance a Valse infernale. Liszt, an avid opera fan, transcribed this waltz in 1841 as Réminiscences de Robert le diable -- Valse infernale, which he performed for the first time at a recital in the Salle Erard on March 27, 1841, creating a furor -- it sold out the same day it was put on sale by his publisher, Maurice Schlesinger. Schlesinger, at that time, was tossing journalistic assignments and musical hackwork to the obscure Richard Wagner, then in perilous financial straits in Paris. At an all-Beethoven fundraising concert on April 25, with Berlioz in command of the orchestra and Liszt the featured soloist, a clamorous audience refused to allow the program to proceed until Liszt at last consented to perform the Valse infernale. Reviewing the event for the Dresden Abendzeitung, Wagner snarled "Some day Liszt in heaven will be summoned to play his Fantasy on The Devil before the assembled company of angels."
