Ex-CIA Officer Speaks Out: The Italian Job

Ex-CIA Officer Speaks Out: The Italian Job

Sabrina De Sousa is one of nearly two-dozen CIA officers who was prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced by Italian courts in absentia in 2009 for the role she allegedly played in the rendition of a radical cleric named Abu Omar. It was the first and only criminal prosecution that has ever taken place related to the CIA's rendition program, which involved more than 100 suspected terrorists and the assistance of dozens of European countries. But De Sousa, a dual US and Portuguese citizen, said she had nothing to do with the cleric's abduction and has been wrongly accused. For the past decade, she has been on a global quest to clear her name. VICE News met up with De Sousa in Lisbon, Portugal--and other key figures connected to the case--for an exclusive interview about the steps she's now taking in an effort to hold the CIA accountable for one of the most notorious counterterrorism operations in the history of the agency. The Future of Firearms Full Report | VICE on HBO

The firearms industry experienced unprecedented growth in the last decade. Fear of government regulation drove much of that growth as President Obama repeatedly tried to pass gun control laws in the aftermath of numerous mass shootings. Now, with the political landscape fundamentally changed, the industry, and gun rights advocates, are looking for new ways to expand upon their 2nd amendment rights and the bottom line -- with some surprising results. VICE takes a closer look at the future of firearms in America. This segment originally aired June 16, 2017, on VICE on HBO. The Champion Mountain Biker Turned Drug Smuggler

VICE's Red Cards meets one of downhill biking's all-time biggest names, Missy "The Missile" Giove. One of the first women to break out on the mountain biking scene in the 90s, Giove was known for her high-intensity riding style and outspoken personality. Her peddle to the meddle attitude did not always result in the safest rides, however, and Giove suffered several injuries throughout her career, eventually causing her to put down the bike. With mounting medical bills and few other options for income after her career drew to a close, Giove sought a new form of adrenaline rush by smuggling millions of dollars worth of marijuana across the country. A massive DEA operation brought Giove head to head with law enforcement in 2009, and she faced up to 40 years in jail. Nearly 10 years later, we catch up with the daredevil to learn more about her life of high stakes racing. Presented by Ryot. The Sinaloa Cartel Is Alive And Thriving Without El Chapo

The Sinaloa Cartel Is Alive And Thriving Without El Chapo

The Sinaloa drug cartel is the largest cartel in the world, and it’s estimated to rake in $3 billion a year. VICE News visited Mexico’s Golden Triangle, the stronghold of the Sinaloa cartel, just days before the extradition of drug lord El Chapo. A decade ago, Mexico declared war on the country’s drug cartels, deploying the military to dismantle them. That means destroying their drug crops. “They do the destruction by hand and also with fumigation with air force planes,” Cmdr. Cesar Augusto Bonilla told VICE News in the “Golden Triangle,” which is notorious for its marijuana and poppy production. “They collect everything that’s been destroyed, and continue to incinerate it.” These types of raids are supposed to cut into the cartel’s profits, just as the arrest of kingpins like El Chapo are supposed to cripple trafficking networks by removing their top commanders. But even after his decade-long imprisonment, and now as he faces extradition, the organization El Chapo built is very much intact. “Nothing has changed here,” the local boss said. “Drug trafficking will never end.” Read: “We visited a hidden poppy field the Sinaloa Cartel uses to produce heroin” - http://bit.ly/2jnKV93 Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Check out VICE News for more: http://vicenews.com Follow VICE News here: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vicenews Twitter: https://twitter.com/vicenews Tumblr: http://vicenews.tumblr.com/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/vicenews More videos from the VICE network: https://www.fb.com/vicevideo

The Rise of Mexican Black Tar Heroin

The Rise of Mexican Black Tar Heroin

As the rate of opioid addiction has surged in the United States, Mexico has become the world's third-largest producer of opium used to process heroin. Mexican cartels are now the primary suppliers of the drug to the US, producing a crude and unrefined form known as black tar. VICE News travels to the fertile mountains of western Mexico, where we see the beginning of the path black tar heroin takes to the US on plantations growing poppies used to make opium. We then head across the US border to witness the human cost there of the lucrative but destructive heroin trade. Guantanamo Bay's Guards Suffer From PTSD Too | VICE News Tonight Full Segment (HBO)

The Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba didn’t just take its toll on inmates. Their guards suffered as well. U.S. military personnel assigned to the Guantanamo Bay detention center suffer from high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to exclusive interviews and documents obtained by VICE News. "I had nightmares where they would somehow get ahold of me and grab my hair and slam my face off a steel door," U.S. Navy veteran Nichole York told VICE News correspondent Jason Leopold. York and fellow U.S. Navy veteran Andrew Turner describe being left in the dark about their mission prior to deployment, working 12-hour days, living in fear and isolation, and finally being diagnosed with PTSD. Turner said he came forward in part so other service members assigned to Guantanamo would know they aren't alone. "I don't want them to be afraid." Six years after leaving Guantanamo Bay, York says she's still afraid of the detainees she was assigned to care for. "My fear is them finding me." 11 Survival Tips from a Former Secret Agent

11 Survival Tips from a Former Secret Agent

A former secret agent is sharing his advice on how to get through any critical situation. It's always fascinating to see how easily CIA agents in movies can survive any extreme situation. Well, they’re even cooler and more resilient in real life. So even if you're the safest driver ever, it wouldn’t hurt to know what to do in case of an accident. When you’re driving, you should keep your hands at 9-and-3, not 10-and-2 as they used to say. Unfortunately, dog attacks are also quite common these days. A mixture of water and ammonia, using a can of pressurized air, like those sprayable air dusters for cleaning keyboards or pepper spray or another animal’s urine will save you. If you ever find yourself in a burning building, there's a chance that you'll need to knock the door down to escape or help others. The way you see it done in the movies couldn't be more wrong! Running towards it and throwing your whole body against it can leave you with a dislocated shoulder or even broken bones. In the moment, panic often takes over, but try to suppress it and follow some important rules. To protect yourself during a shooting, you need to find a good cover. If you’ve got a gun pointed at you, it's best to behave extremely carefully to minimize any possible risks of getting seriously hurt. If a serious explosion is about to go off, your actions should be quick and precise. Finding refuge is the most important thing. In case you get locked in the trunk of a car, you can try to open the trunk's lock latch. Another option is to try to escape through the folding back seat. If the snow on the ground is really thick and you see a couple of evergreen trees nearby, then you’ve found the perfect place to build yourself a refuge to wait out the storm and warm up a bit. Music: Barge Gunnar Olsen Sci-Fi Swamp Chase - Sir Cubworth TIMESTAMPS A car crash 0:46 A dog attack 1:50 Knocking the door down in case of fire 2:50 Barricading a door 3:37 A shooting 4:23 Being at gunpoint 5:19 An explosion 6:12 Being locked in the trunk of a car 6:50 If your hands and feet are tied together 7:37 Being in water with your hands and feet tied 8:21 Making a shelter in deep snow 9:11 Bonus: secret agent must-haves 10:10 SUMMARY -When you’re driving, you should keep your hands at 9-and-3, not 10-and-2 as they used to say. If you’re a passenger in the back seat, during a collision, put your hands on the back of your head, press your forehead against the seat in front of you, and keep your knees bent at a 90° angle. -A mixture of water and ammonia is one of the best ways to scare away aggressive dogs. The most effective choice is pepper spray or another animal’s urine. -A precise and powerful enough kick with your heel will knock out any lock. -You can put rubber doorstops all around the door’s crevices or do it like in the movies: just put a bunch of heavy objects in front of the door. -To protect yourself during a shooting, you need to find a good cover. Remember that things like clipboards and hardcover books can stop bullets, so you can use them as a bulletproof vest. -If somebody is pointing a gun at your back and has ordered you to walk ahead, raise your arms and slow down so that the gun is pressed right up against your back. Then, turn around quickly, bring one arm down so that it traps the gun under your armpit, and use your other arm to attack the gunman. -Finding refuge is the most important thing. Cross your legs, open your mouth, and cover your ears with your hands. -Find the emergency pull located on the inside of the trunk, and the trunk will pop open. -To free your legs, stand up straight and point your toes out to make a “V” with your feet. Then, jump up and as you land, spread your knees really fast. If your hands are tied behind your back, you need to get them in front of you. Once that's done, press them together tightly and then quickly pull them apart. -Don't panic, take deep breaths in and quick breaths out. If you're swimming on your belly, move by bending your knees, straightening them back again, and keeping your back arched so that your head stays above water. -Find the thickest evergreen tree with low hanging branches and dig a hole in the snow along the tree trunk. Then pack the snow on the “walls” of your hideaway as densely as you can. -Some of the most popular contents in special agents' bags include a key to handcuffs, a flashlight, a gun, a pen, a compass, a razor blade, a pocket knife, a mouthguard, and some lockpicks. Revisiting the Glory Days With One of Japan's Most Violent Biker Gangs

Revisiting the Glory Days With One of Japan's Most Violent Biker Gangs

Japanese motorcycle gangs have wreaked havoc since the 1970s. Known as Bosozuku, these gangs have a violent history, raging war against rival crews and cops. Gang members roamed the highways, sometimes hundreds at a time, with an array of brutal weaponry, customized bikes, and distinct crew jumpsuits. Being part of one of these motorcycle gangs was a frantic lifestyle, one that could easily lead to grievous bodily harm, and death. Youth were recruited from their early teens to join the gangs under the mentorship of an elder. It was of utmost importance to protect the reputation of the gang, to never run from a fight, even when grossly outnumbered. In recent years, with strict laws and police cracking down, Bosozoku have become nearly extinct. Yet for those who were a part of the subculture during its heyday, Bosozoku will always provide a fond memory of the recklessness of youth. The Illegal Big Cats of Instagram

The Illegal Big Cats of Instagram

Buying illegal wild animals in Kuwait is, as one local puts it, "as easy as acquiring a cupcake." Pets have long been used as status symbols the world over, but citizens of the Gulf take the prize when it comes to keeping the most exotic, controversial species—most commonly, "big cat" cubs. International law governing Kuwait and other Gulf states forbids the import and sale of wild animals, yet the sight of supercars being driven around with a cheetah in the front seat is starting to become commonplace on Arab Instagram feeds. Although there are legal ways to bring an animal into Kuwait, paying people off along the way is easier. Lion, cheetah, and tiger cubs are in the highest demand, fetching up to $15,000 each through black market agents. More often than not, the owners have little idea how to care for these creatures, which have no history of domestication and quickly become unmanageable—even lethal—once they're fully grown. In Big Cats of the Gulf, VICE investigates the area's flourishing trade in animal trafficking and how it impacts the depleting wildcat populations of Central and East Africa. We gain exclusive access to Kuwait's biggest Instagram star of the big cat phenomenon and hear first-hand of the deadly consequences of the business—both for the animals and their owners. This Is How Easy It Is To Get Hacked | VICE on HBO

This Is How Easy It Is To Get Hacked | VICE on HBO

Since the 2016 election, the notion of hacking has become inextricably intertwined with one country: Russia. But cyber crimes emanating from Russia and Russian speaking countries have been around for years, fueling attacks like a 2014 data breach of more than 500 million Yahoo! accounts and a scheme that stole 160 million credit cards from American corporations. "If someone wants to hack you, they're gonna be able to" former NSA hacker Patrick Wardle told VICE News. And if a Russian wants to hack you, they've certainly got the tools: A 2016 report by the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that 75 percent of all ransomware was created in Russia. The apparent lack of ethical consideration in the buildup of Russian information technology and cyber security is rooted in decades of technical education under Stalin, who launched polytechnic schools to train engineers for his military-industrial complex. Russia's cyber capabilities can now be used for just about everything, ranging from digital bank robberies to tampering with critical infrastructure. "This is the website of a big online store." Kostya, an anonymous Russian hacker who agreed to show VICE News how easy it is to steal digital data. "I can get into their configurations and download their client database." Spurred by the trillions of dollars online and in a generation raised on the web, hacking from Russia and around the world is flourishing. VICE News went to Moscow to see the country’s expert hackers in action. Enforcement action has seen us tackle dealers and use intelligence to target organised crime gangs across Greater Manchester - 55 people have been arrested for possession with intent to supply spice since January 2017 in the city centre alone. In addition to this we have also arrested 90 others for being in possession of the drug, with many of these people directed to support services. Greater Manchester Police say: “It’s crucial that we continue to work with partners, including Manchester City Council’s Antisocial Behaviour Action Team, the CPS and the courts to take dealers off the streets but also with health and support services to refer users so that they can get the help that they need and ultimately help us tackle the issue. We remain committed to working together to keep Manchester safe for everyone, but we do need the continued support of the community in reporting suspicious incidents through 101, or 999 in an emergency." He's known as "the Teacher" to his 4,000 followers, who initially seem surprisingly normal. Over time, however, their unflinching belief in UFOs and the Earth's imminent demise made this group start to look more and more like some sort of strange cult. Inside the FBI Hunt for “Black Identity Extremists”

Inside the FBI Hunt for “Black Identity Extremists”

According to a leaked FBI assessment, “Black Identity Extremists” are a new group of domestic terrorists who pose a serious and violent threat to American law enforcement. The assessment is based on unsubstantiated grouping of unrelated police shootings and has drawn much public scrutiny for its apparent advocacy of racial profiling. Rakem Balogun, an outspoken black activist in Dallas, is considered the first person to be targeted as a “Black Identity Extremist”. After being detained for nearly 6 months on weapons charges, VICE met up with Rakem on the day he was released from prison to learn more about the events leading to his arrest and real-world repercussions of the new “Black Identity Extremist” label. The Battle Raging In Nigeria Over Control Of Oil | VICE on HBO

The Battle Raging In Nigeria Over Control Of Oil | VICE on HBO

Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse. Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either. “All the oil that is sold around here, the government calls illegally refined products,” local oil businessman Don Wizaro told VICE News. And when the Nigerian military raids illegal oil operations, they slash containers, releasing oil into waterways, contaminating what the main source of fishing, agriculture, and drinking water. As the government continues its assault on illegal refineries and barges carrying stolen oil, local militias are retaliating. And one of the most notorious militias is the Niger Delta Avengers. They attack pipelines and infrastructure, significantly affecting both the environment and the economy. VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni heads to the heart of Nigeria's oil production to witness firsthand the fight over the control of oil in the Niger Delta. Inside Westside Barbell, Powerlifting's Most Exclusive and Controversial Gym

In the dead center of Ohio, inside a dingy warehouse littered with weights and what looks like torture devices lies powerlifting’s most controversial and exclusive gym — Westside Barbell. Founded in 1987 by Louie Simmons, the gym is now a legend in the powerlifting and strength sports world thanks to the methods and training machines Louie has developed, and the 140 plus world records the gym has broke in competition.  However, Louie and some of his lifters hold very unapologetic stances on steroids and their use of them, and this has left the gym mired in controversy.    We traveled to Columbus, Ohio to meet with Louie and some of the lifters at Westside to talk with them about the culture of the gym, Louie’s renowned training methods and their use of performance-enhancing drugs. Russia Is Profiting Off Global Warming | VICE on HBO

Russia Is Profiting Off Global Warming | VICE on HBO

While many parts of the world are struggling from catastrophic effects of climate change, Russia is looking to capitalize on it, with the Kremlin driving a narrative that touts the economic benefits. Like more and faster access to petroleum and mineral reserves that were previously unreachable. The Northern Sea Passage, a legendary shipping lane along Russia’s Arctic coastline, has been largely inaccessible for part of the year because of dense sea ice. But now, that ice is melting, opening up a new trade route for Russia's cargo ships. Russian oil companies are already betting big on the new reserves they hope to find in the Russian Arctic, and other industries — like mining — are ramping up production since they now have faster shipping routes to many ports. “The problem of climate change is actually the problem of adaptation to climate change. This is not a tragedy,” said Nobel Prize-winning climatologist Oleg Anisimov. “Certainly some places will become unlivable, but other areas are places that will become more livable.” But the Russian people seem unaware, or unconcerned, about the environmental impacts of these climate change-related activities, like pollution from the booming factories, and wildfires in the North that destroyed million of acres of forest in a major tourism area. VICE’s Gianna Toboni visited Russia's Arctic to see just how big the country is betting on climate change. Deathbed Confession by former CIA agent on UFOs / The Anonymous Interview (Official Film Trailer)

Deathbed Confession by former CIA agent on UFOs / The Anonymous Interview (Official Film Trailer)

THE ANONYMOUS INTERVIEW (21 min 56 sec) is a film by award winning director Jeremy Kenyon Lockyer Corbell. This motion picture is an exploration into the witness testimony of a highly controversial alleged ex-CIA operative who claims, through his military and intelligence career, to have been exposed to realities and technologies of an Extraterrestrial nature. This “deathbed confession” was featured as witness testimony at the Citizens Hearing on Disclosure at the National Press Club in Washington DC last year, and has caused hot debate within the intelligence and UFO communities. THE HISTORY OF A COSMIC WHISTLEBLOWER June 6th, 1998 - Investigative journalist Linda Moulton Howe brought a witness under the pseudonym AGENT KEWPER on the radio show Coast to Coast AM. The witness claimed that through his military service, he had acquired knowledge and first hand experience with extraterrestrials and their technologies. Immediately after this report, AGENT KEWPER was warned to cease and desist all contact with Linda Moulton Howe, or to suffer the consequences. Fifteen years later, and fearing the end was near, the witness emerged from the shadows and was once again ready to tell his extraordinary story. Due to the warning received about speaking with Linda Moulton Howe, we arranged for the UFO historian Richard Dolan to conduct the interview. This is part of that story. Despite his fears, ANONYMOUS later authorized the use of his image and testimony for inclusion at the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure in Washington D.C. Our team continues to verify the claims made by ANONYMOUS. More will be revealed about this case in the final version of our film TRUTH EMBARGO.
