In this video I will explain to you with examples what Torque and HP are and how they differ from one another. How they are calculated and what each means when talking about engines. This way next time you take in your car and put it on a Dyno (Dynamometer) and get your Peak Torque and Horsepower you know they exactly mean. And while I created a video without the use of bad analogies to explain the difference between the power and torque (https://youtu.be/u-MH4sf5xkY), the comments were flooded with the inaccurate meme anyways. Unfortunately horsepower and torque shouldn't be oversimplified to a short analogy, even if neither of them are all that difficult to understand individually. In this video we'll analyze the expression, and discuss exactly why it is inaccurate, what a more accurate analogy would be, and hopefully clear up additional misconceptions about power and torque through the use of dyno plots and a comparison between a diesel engine with lots of torque, versus a gasoline engine with not much power. When To Shift Gears For The Best Fuel Economy

When Should You Shift Gears? How To Get The Best Fuel Economy When To Shift For Acceleration - https://youtu.be/zZBqb0ZJSwU EE Shirts! - http://bit.ly/2BHsiuo Recommended Books & Car Products - http://amzn.to/2BrekJm Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 When is the best time to shift gears for maximum fuel economy? In this video we look at how to drive efficient, how to drive with good fuel economy, and when to shift gears to maximize fuel efficiency. When you're accelerating and shifting through the gears, it's important to keep the engine in an optimal region where it operates most efficiently if you want to maximize fuel economy. This engine region is determined by an engine's brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC). BSFC is a measurement of the amount of fuel required to produce a certain amount of power, for a given engine load and RPM. Generally speaking, BSFC is highest in high load, low RPM regions. This video will demonstrate this by conducting a test showing fuel consumption with the engine at four different operating regions, but with the same power requirement for each - to keep a car moving at 60 mph. Check out the video for full details, and to learn when the best time to shift is! Why Don't Small Turbo Engines Get Good Gas Mileage? These small turbo engines tout the power of larger engines, but with much better fuel efficiency. You may notice however, your real world fuel economy may not always match up with the EPA numbers provided on the vehicle's monroney sticker. Why is this? Well while downsized turbos do have many advantages, such as less moving parts, less weight, better packaging, lower frictional losses, and lower pumping losses, once the vehicles start to get into boost, that efficiency can be significantly lower. This video will discuss fuel enrichment and why it's necessary for high boost engines in order for them to run reliably. Engineering Explained is a participant in the Amazon Influencer Program. Do We Really Need 10-Speed Transmissions?

Do We Really Need 10-Speed Transmissions?

Why Transmissions With Loads Of Gears Are A Good Idea When Should You Shift Gears? https://youtu.be/zZBqb0ZJSwU Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 EE Shirts! - http://bit.ly/2BHsiuo Recommended Books & Car Products - http://amzn.to/2BrekJm There are very legitimate reasons why we're seeing 10-speed automatic transmissions implemented in new cars, such as the Lexus LC500. More gears means a broader range of gear ratios without massive steps between those gear ratios. It means you can keep your car's engine closer to peak horsepower in order to achieve maximum acceleration, and it means you can put your engine in the right load and RPM range in order to maximize efficiency. This video will dive into the details of why more gears can be a good thing, even with the negative consequences such as additional complexity, frequent gear shifts, and time lost in acceleration from more frequent shifts. The Lexus LC500 pairs a 5.0 naturally aspirated V8 to a 10-speed automatic transmission, and it sounds quick beautiful churning through the gears. That's not to say the transmission isn't without flaws. Check out the video for full thoughts on 10-speed transmissions and the implementation within the LC500. Are Electric Cars The Future? - https://youtu.be/wLrvGtw8jAQ Because electric cars produce peak torque at zero RPM, you might be surprised by the acceleration they're capable of, especially at lower vehicle speeds. On the other hand, internal combustion engines need to be spinning up at a much higher speed than electric motors before they produce peak torque, especially engines like the F20C in the Honda S2000 used in this video. The cars chosen for the comparison are quite different. The Nissan Leaf has high torque, 236 lb-ft, but relatively low power at 147 HP. The Honda S2000 on the other hand has decent power, 265 whp, but low torque at just 163 lb-ft. The engine is designed to make peak power and peak torque at very high RPM, above 8,000, versus zero RPM like the Leaf. The S2000 is much lighter, however. Which vehicle will accelerate faster? I've created a simple 0-80 mph test to show how the torque delivery of each vehicle differs. Don't forget to check out my other pages below! Mazda's Secret To Efficient Turbo Engines

How Mazda Makes Turbocharged Engines Efficient In The Real World Small Turbo Engines Aren't Efficient? - https://youtu.be/9aO2vC_iMTI Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 EE Shirts! - http://bit.ly/2BHsiuo Recommended Books & Car Products - http://amzn.to/2BrekJm Mazda's 2.5L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine won a Ward's Auto 10 Best Engines award in 2017 for the CX-9. The engine is now also used in the 2018 Mazda 6. The engine produces 227 horsepower on regular gas, and 310 lb-ft of torque. It has a unique approach for downsized turbo engines, which generally result in good fuel economy at low loads, but fail to provide efficiency when the driver demands more power. Several of the clever technologies within this engine include a 4-3-1 exhaust that maximizes exhaust scavenging for turbocharged engines, while also providing two separate airflow paths to keep the turbo spooled at both low and high RPM. The engine also has cooled EGR to increase the load at which a stoichiometric air fuel ratio can be used. Check out the video for full details about how this engine provides loads of torque, but still offers good fuel economy. Engineering Explained is a participant in the Amazon Influencer Program.
