Philip Glass - Metamorphosis | complete

Philip Glass - Metamorphosis | complete

Philip Glass - Metamorphosis (1988) I made this record using an old amazing (one of my favorite instrument actually) Steinway & Sons model O grand piano. (Steinway officially stopped production of the Model O in 1924, but I guess this one was built around 1925-1926 according to serial number) "Metamorphosis One" – 00:00 "Metamorphosis Two" – 06:54 "Metamorphosis Three" – 13:59 "Metamorphosis Four" – 19:09 "Metamorphosis Five" – 26:29 /// "Metamorphosis", refers to and was inspired by the 1915 short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. While all pieces were written in 1988, some were written for a staging of Metamorphosis, while others were for a documentary film called The Thin Blue Line directed by Errol Morris. "Metamorphosis One" is played in an episode of Battlestar Galactica by Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. Within the narrative, her father composed and performed the piece. It is also played in the series finale of Person of Interest, Return 0. "Metamorphosis Two" formed the basis of one of the main musical themes in the film The Hours. It is also the song that the American rock band Pearl Jam uses as their introduction music to concerts.

Barbara Hannigan: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Barbara Hannigan: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Jan. 26, 2018 | Tom Huizenga -- In these days of wireless earbuds, streams and podcasts, the notion of people gathering to hear a lone classical singer (with a pianist) perform densely structured art songs in a foreign tongue seems almost laughably quaint. Yet the vocal recital, as a performance genre, is still alive. And one of the most memorable recitals I've witnessed in a long time sits on this page, in a condensed form, thanks to the extraordinary soprano Barbara Hannigan and her accompanist Reinbert de Leeuw. The night before this Tiny Desk concert, the two musicians gave a beautiful and intense recital at Washington's Kennedy Center. The songs, all in German, came from a heady period in Vienna, when music was transitioning from the swells of romanticism to the uncharted waters of modernism. Four of those songs make up this Tiny Desk performance. The bonus here is that these impassioned dispatches become even more intimate. Consider the opening song, Alexander Zemlinsky's "Empfängnis" (Conception). The harmonies are sweet, but almost too rich, like overripe fruit, when Hannigan sings lines like, "Und wie ich sehend meine Arme breite" (And as I open my arms with longing). You can hear the end of a musical era. An indefatigable champion of new and modern music, Hannigan (who is also a conductor) has given the world premieres of more than 80 pieces. The voice is simply gorgeous — silvery, buttery-smooth throughout the registers, with crystalline top notes emerging from thin air and charged with emotion. In Alma Mahler's "Licht in der Nacht" (Light in the Night), Hannigan taps into the mysterious sparkle of a little yellow star twinkling through black skies as de Leeuw's piano explores wayward harmonies. Hugo Wolf's "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt" (Only One Who Knows Longing) is a hymn to the yearning heart. De Leeuw explains that the key of G minor, in which the song is written, never materializes. It's all about the longing for G minor. The final song, "Schenk mir deinen goldenen Kamm" (the first music by Arnold Schoenberg to grace the Tiny Desk), offers a double dose of sensuality. Hannigan's beautiful middle register and creamy phrasing paint the scene: Jesus asks Mary Magdalene for her comb because it will remind him every morning that she once kissed his hair. Hannigan calls the song "erotic" and she delivers on that feeling when, at the end, she cries out the name "Magdalena" with a lustrous, silken tone, touched with anguish. Hannigan told the audience that her Kennedy Center recital felt like "a sacred moment of people coming together in very deep concentration." At this Tiny Desk recital, it happened all over again. SET LIST Alexander Zemlinsky: "Empfängnis" Alma Mahler: "Licht in der Nacht" Hugo Wolf: "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt" Arnold Schoenberg: "Schenk mir deinen goldenen Kamm" MUSICIANS Barbara Hannigan (soprano), Reinbert de Leeuw (piano) CREDITS Producers: Tom Huizenga, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Alyse Young; Page Turner: Suraya Mohamed; Production Assistant: Salvatore Maicki; Photo: Jennifer Kerrigan/NPR For more Tiny Desk concerts, subscribe to our podcast.

Barbara Hannigan, Mahler Chamber Orchestra - concert & documentary - Lucerne Festival 2014

Accentus Music new on DVD in May 2015: She crosses boundaries and loves to explore new territory. Barbara Hannigan is one of the most fascinating and multifacetted artistic personalities of our time. She sets new standards as a singer, conductor, and performance artist. The intimate portrait “I’m a creative animal” takes the viewer into the world of an exceptional musician – a world of both passion and discipline. Her performances possess a breathtaking intensity because of her exquisite vocal technique and virtuosity, musical and theatrical expressivity, and uncompromising engagement. In this concert with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Hannigan both sings and conducts to effortlessly build bridges linking different musical epochs. With a phenomenal performance of Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre, a work for which she is famous, she once again confirms her reputation as the performer of contemporary music – “The audience went wild.” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) CONCERT Mahler Chamber Orchestra Barbara Hannigan (soprano/conductor) Concert Hall of KKL Luzern, August 2014 Gioachino Rossini: Overture to La scala di seta Wolfgang A. Clocks and Clouds -- Gyorgy Ligeti

Clocks and Clouds -- Gyorgy Ligeti

"Clocks and Clouds" for 12-part women's chorus and orchestra. Music accompanied by the video "A Space Journey" and the original video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Un5SEJ8MyPc from the user "Impermanence". It should also be noted that the idea of pairing this work with outer-space scenery is not mine. A similar video was posted a while back, but it is no longer here. Ligeti's "Clocks and Clouds" is a relatively-short composition from 1972-1973 that takes its title from Karl Popper's 1966 philosophical essay "Of Clouds and Clocks". In this, Popper makes a compelling and easily-understood argument that scientific phenomena can be broken down into two main categories. The "clocks" are things that we can depend on such as, well, clocks. A clock can be easily measured, taken apart, and reconstructed. "Clouds", on the other hand, are things that we can only get a general, macroscopic view of -- things whose inner-workings we are unable to understand in a deterministic way. A cloud cannot be easily measured nor can it be taken apart. Furthermore, Popper argues that clouds are really made up of a cumbersome number of clocks -- so many that the whole cannot be understood completely. It isn't at all surprising that the meteorologist Edward Lorenz was making major breakthroughs in what we now tend to call "chaos theory" -- most easily defined by a sensitivity to initial conditions. Lorenz's major work in this area is known as "The Butterfly Effect" from the famous question he posed "can the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil cause a tornado in Oklahoma?" Throughout the 1960s, Ligeti was composing in two distinct styles described perfectly by Popper's essay. The "clouds" category includes works such as "Atmospheres" (1961), Lontano (1967), and the first movement from his "Cello Concerto" (1966). Examples of pieces falling under the "clocks" description are the third movement of his "Chamber Concerto" (1969) and the third movement of his "String Quartet No. 2" (1968). This "mechanical" style can be traced back to his semi-comical 1962 "Poem Symphonique pour 100 Metronomes", in which 100 metronomes are wound-up and left to unwind at various tempos. While compositions such as the "Chamber Concerto" and "String Quartet No. 2" do include both "clouds" and "clocks", they are presented in separate movements. It is in "Clocks and Clouds" where Ligeti seamlessly connects one to the other. Being one of his last works in this micropolyphonic style, it is a great summing up of a stylistic period.

Yuja Wang: Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26 (Claudio Abbado, LUCERNE FESTIVAL)

Live recording at the Lucerne Festival, Summer 2009 Concert Hall of the KKL Luzern, August 2009 Yuja Wang - soloist Lucerne Festival Orchestra Claudio Abbado - conductor Subscribe to EuroArts: https://goo.gl/jrui3M Sergei Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Opus 26 1:00 I. Andante - Allegro (8:51) 9:53 II. Tema con variazioni (9:08) 19:03 III. Allegro ma non troppo (11:53) Whenever Claudio Abbado conducts the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, music lovers are in for a very special event. Such was the case in the summer of 2009, when the charismatic Italian conductor opened Lucerne's tradition-rich Festival with a concert featuring Mahler's First Symphony and Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. In 2003 Abbado, together with Artistic and Executive Director Michael Haefliger, founded the orchestra, which consists of internationally renowned soloists and chamber musicians - just as did its model, the elite body of musicians that Arturo Toscanini gathered around hirn at the Festival's founding in 1938. lt was with this first-class ensemble that Abbado offered a vividly inspired interpretation of the Mahler. In truth - as the audience's response demonstrated - it left nothing to be desired. The twenty-two-year-old Chinese Pianist Yuja Wang likewise earned enthusiastic applause for her account of the Prokofiev Concerto, which she played with character and nuanced expression. The theme of nature served es the guiding thread for all the programming choices during the summer of 2009 - a theme with obvious relevance for the LUCERNE FESTIVAL, which is held amid one of the most beautitul landscapes of Europe: its concerts incIude unforgettable views of Lake Lucerne and Alpine panoramas. This theme, es it happens, has eminent musical significance es well: 'Like a sound of nature' is the direction Mahler inscribed at the very beginning of the First Symphony.
