A microscopic look at why the world is running out of sand

A microscopic look at why the world is running out of sand

Humans are using more sand than the Earth is naturally producing, and that’s a problem for the global construction industry. But it turns out that the usefulness of sand depends on the science of each tiny little grain. We went on a sand scavenger hunt to collect some samples, look at them under a microscope, and try to figure out why sand scarcity is such a problem. The high cost of free parking

The high cost of free parking

Hidden parking rules hurt our cities. Will Chilton and Paul Mackie of Mobility Lab explain. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO The cities we live in are shaped by the way we get around them. Over the past 60 years, with more and more people opting to drive cars, the need for parking spaces has increased with the boom in driving. To accommodate that demand early on, cities and towns started requiring developers to include parking with their new buildings after World War II. These policies, known as mandatory parking minimums, set precise standards for parking spaces for each building. And these parking spaces don't come cheap. The story of 'Oumuamua, the first visitor from another star system | Karen J. Meech

In October 2017, astrobiologist Karen J. Meech got the call every astronomer waits for: NASA had spotted the very first visitor from another star system. The interstellar comet -- a half-mile-long object eventually named `Oumuamua, from the Hawaiian for "scout" or "messenger" -- raised intriguing questions: Was it a chunk of rocky debris from a new star system, shredded material from a supernova explosion, evidence of alien technology or something else altogether? In this riveting talk, Meech tells the story of how her team raced against the clock to find answers about this unexpected gift from afar. Where are all the aliens? | Stephen Webb

Where are all the aliens? | Stephen Webb

The universe is incredibly old, astoundingly vast and populated by trillions of planets -- so where are all the aliens? Astronomer Stephen Webb has an explanation: we're alone in the universe. In a mind-expanding talk, he spells out the remarkable barriers a planet would need to clear in order to host an extraterrestrial civilization -- and makes a case for the beauty of our potential cosmic loneliness. "The silence of the universe is shouting, 'We're the creatures who got lucky,'" Webb says. How to improve your vision at home? How to say goodbye to your glasses without expensive surgery? Here’s a list of 5 effective home remedies that will help you improve your vision naturally and boost your eyes. These remedies you most likely have at home have proven their effectiveness over centuries. TIMESTAMPS Aloe vera 0:56 Ginkgo biloba 4:18 Green tea 5:29 Bilberry 6:41 Almonds 7:21 Music: Someways - Nicolai Heidlas is licensed under a Creative Commons license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/) SUMMARY -Aloe vera is a great source of important vitamins and antioxidants that help with white blood cell production and tissue recovery. Aloe vera is effective enough even when used alone, but we’ll spice it up with following ingredients: 1 lb of ground walnuts, 300 ml of pure honey and freshly squeezed juice from 4 lemons. -Ginkgo biloba can help relieve anxiety and boost your memory and thinking process, which is especially good for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. As for our vision, it’s great at increasing blood flow to the eyes. -Green tea is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which fight off free radicals that can cause a number of eye diseases, like glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts. -Bilberries improve nighttime vision, and help regenerate important parts of the retina, which can be damaged because of high blood pressure and diabetes. -Raw almonds are a natural source of omega-3 fatty acid, vitamin E and antioxidants, all of which are great at improving vision. What you have to do is soak 5 to 10 nuts overnight. When you wake up in the morning, peel and grind them. Secrets of the Stone Age (1/2) | DW Documentary

Secrets of the Stone Age (1/2) | DW Documentary

During the Stone Age, humans shifted from the nomadic lifestyle to the more settled life of farmers. A documentary on an important period of human history. Watch Part 2 here: https://youtu.be/XSGRd5Ve1zI Around 12,000 years ago, humans underwent a transition from nomads to settlers. That epoch, the Stone Age, produced monumental building works. Part 1 of this two-part documentary illuminates the cultural background of these structures and shows the difficulties Stone Age humans had to contend with. Until around 10,000 BC, humans lived as hunters and gatherers. Then an irreversible change began. Settlements formed. "For millions of years humans lived as foragers and suddenly their lives changed radically. This was far more radical than the start of the digital age or industrialization," says prehistorian Hermann Parzinger, president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. For a long time, scholars believed that a sedentary lifestyle was a prerequisite for constructing large buildings. Then archaeologist Klaus Schmidt discovered Göbekli Tepe in southern Turkey, a 12,000-year-old complex of stone blocks weighing up to 20 tons. Its builders were still hunter- gatherers. They decorated the stone columns with ornate animal reliefs. How these structures were used and who was allowed access to them remains a mystery. But we now know that the site was abandoned and covered over once settlements took root. Human development continued its course. The discovery of agriculture and animal husbandry led to larger settlements, a changed diet and ultimately to dependence on material goods. This social upheaval in the late Neolithic period has influenced our lives up to the present day. But experts agree that the monuments of the Stone Age prove that humans have gigantomanic tendencies and a need to immortalize themselves. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Top 10 Countries With The LARGEST Gold Reserves!

India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. 10 Fun Facts About America Even Americans Don't Know

How much do you know about the U.S.? Were you aware that the Library of Congress could have a record of some of your social media posts? Let’s see which of these 10 little-known facts about the United States will manage to surprise you the most! For example, in fact, there were actually 6 American flags placed on the moon during the Apollo landings. It’s unknown whether all those flags are still standing, but the ones that remain have most likely been bleached completely white, from exposure to radiation from the sun. Or what do you think America’s favorite drink is? Go ahead and guess down in the comments! Tea, coffee, soda, juice? If you think soda, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong since it was the top beverage choice for Americans until recently. Now, its crown has passed to…bottled water! TIMESTAMPS: Out-of-this-world flag 1:05 Americans on the moon 2:03 The greatest of the Great Lakes 2:52 The most visited museums in America 3:49 America’s favorite drink 5:03 The Library of Congress archives 6:05 “Hollywoodland” 7:09 Halloween craze 8:04 The Empire State Building lightning strikes 9:08 The Statue of Liberty 10:05 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - In the U.S., you can see the Star-Spangled Banner waving in the wind at fast food joints, standing tall in people’s yards or attached to their houses, and printed on all kinds of stuff like clothing, pillows, and coffee mugs. - If Armstrong was the first, not many people know that the last man to walk the moon was Apollo 17 Commander Eugene Cernan. - With a surface area of about 31,700 square miles, this lake is about the size of South Carolina! And with a volume of 2,900 cubic miles, Lake Superior is big enough to cover the entirety of North and South America in a foot of water. - Both museums saw around 7 million visitors in 2017, making them tied for the #3 spot on the list of the world’s most visited museums. - In 2016, Americans consumed 88.8 gallons of coffee per capita! So, now you know why your favorite coffee shop is always so crowded! - The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, holding over 167 million items like rare books, manuscripts, photographs, recordings, and plenty of other important and historic materials. - But when it was installed back in 1923, this iconic sign actually read “Hollywoodland” instead of “Hollywood.” It was originally meant to be a real-estate ad for an upscale district that was only supposed to stand for about a year and a half. - According to the National Retail Federation, more than 175 million Americans are estimated to participate in the holiday in 2018 and will spend around $9 billion. - The tallest building in America is the One World Trade Center at 1,776 feet. But for a long time, from 1931 to 1972, it was the 1,250-foot-tall Empire State Building that held this title. - A lesser known fact is that Lady Liberty looked quite different when she first arrived in New York from Paris. When the copper statue was completed and brought to America in 1886, it was more like the color of a penny. How to Properly Clean Your Glasses, Sunglasses or Camera Filters

How to Properly Clean Your Glasses, Sunglasses or Camera Filters

Watch our new video: DIY — How to Find the Proper Lens Strength for Your New Eyeglasses https://youtu.be/JnKZv55sJgM Hello and welcome to the TranslatorsCafe.com Channel! In this video I am going to explain how to clean your eyeglasses or sunglasses with or without anti-reflecting and oleophobic coating. Many people clear lenses of their glasses like this: they exhale onto their lenses and then wipe the fog off with a dirty piece of cloth. In a couple of months their plastic lenses are damaged and much to the joy of opticians they order a new pair of glasses in less than a year. When 10 years ago I started wearing reading glasses every day, I did not know how to clean them. I saw many products for cleaning and even tried several of them until I found the best way to clean my eyeglasses without scratching them — to wash them. It should be noted that when I made a research before starting making this video, I realized that the idea is not new and that many people clean their glasses this way! The first thing: never ever dry your lenses with paper towels, which contain wood fibers that can scratch your lenses. Also, never use even 100% cotton material, which can also be filled with dust, which contain abrasive particles. Although you can use special cleaning solutions, don’t do it if you don’t want to waste your money. The cost of water, drop of isopropyl alcohol and a drop of dishwasher liquid is almost zero comparing to the cost of cleaning solutions. Just wash away dust from your lenses with warm water. Then apply dishwasher liquid to both sides of the lens and rub them gently. Rinse with tap water, then do a final rinse with distilled water. The distilled water is necessary if your tap water is hard. Dry then with an air blower or with a compressed gas duster. Your lenses will be clear and clean with no scratches. So, here are the steps: Wash your hands to remove grease from your fingers. Rinse your eyeglasses with warm water to wash away dust from your lenses. Put just a little bit of dish soap between your fingers. Dish soap is designed to remove oily and greasy residue from your dishes. This is what you want to do to your glasses! You want to remove grease! Apply the soap thoroughly with your fingers in circular motions on both sides of the lenses. You can also continue applying the soap onto the rest of the frame, including the temples, bridge and nose pieces. Rinse your glasses under warm water, which will remove the soap. Do not use your fingers while rinsing. If your tap water is hard, that is, it contains dissolved minerals of calcium and magnesium, then you will need to rinse your glasses in the distilled water. After rinsing, shake or tap your glasses against your knee to remove water drops. Now use an air blower or compressed gas duster and blow all water that remained after tapping. If you used distilled water, blowing is not necessary. Water will dry without any traces of salts on the glass. All glasses and sunglasses often come with a little cloth. Opticians put this little cloth with one reason: they want you to come to them more often! Any cloth and especially paper towels and any other paper products will scratch your lenses because they contain abrasive particles. Besides, cloth and paper usually just smear dirt all over the lenses. When you use the compressed gas blower, press its trigger gently because it can “spit” liquid in the gas stream. If this happens, you will have to repeat cleaning with soap and water. You can wipe any residual water only from lens edges. A note about alcohol. Some people say alcohol can remove lens coatings and leave a fogged lens. I used isopropyl alcohol to clean particular greasy lenses and never noticed any problem. Isopropyl alcohol is also used in commercially available pre-moistened lens cloth. The same technique can be used to clean camera lens filters used when taking pictures with a DSLR camera. Wash them with dishwasher detergent, then rinse with running water, and then do a final rinse with distilled water. After that blow off all drops with an air blower. Unfortunately, this technique cannot be used to clean the front elements of your lenses. Now before we talk about a normal set of sunglasses and a pair of polarized ones and how they affect your vision we quickly need to discuss unpolarized and polarized light waves. The light emitting from the sun releases light particles, better known as Photons. These photons vibrate up and down, or side to side creating a bundle of light waves flying towards planet earth. Which means that the light provided by the sun flys in horizontal or vertical waves, therefore making the light waves unpolarized. But, the sunlight can untangle itself pretty easily. Those light particles just have to strike something, like a lake or in our case clouds, and they'll start vibrating in the same direction. Meaning all the photons start oscillating in the direction that's perpendicular to that surface. So, the light particles that bounce off a horizontal surface will then begin oscillating vertically. Meaning the reflected particles suddenly have fallen into sync reflecting as polarized light. Which brings us back to our polarized sunglasses. I admit the name was not well chosen, they should have called them "sunglasses with vertical or horizontal bars", which are able to block polarized light. So let´s say the sun light which gets reflected off a cloud, is coming vertically towards you, giving you that nasty glare. Now if you put on your polarized sunglasses with "horizontal bars" in them, they will block the vertical light waves and reduce the glare. Now you´ll think that´s great, cause pilots see sunlight reflecting clouds most of their time, so why can´t they wear polarized sunglasses? Here comes the problem! Watch the rest of the video to learn more about polarized sunglasses influence your vision in a modern airliner cockpit!
