Today Apple is the most profitable company in the world and it very recently became the first trillion-dollar publicly-traded company in America. And yet just two decades ago Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy; surprisingly, it wasn't Steve Jobs that saved them, but their biggest rival at the time: Microsoft. Throughout the 1990s Microsoft was expanding aggressively, achieving a staggering 90% market share in the personal computer market. Apple, meanwhile, was in rapid decline: developers were making fewer and fewer applications for the Macintosh, while Apple's license for Microsoft Office was expiring. Things were looking grim, until at Apple's yearly conference, Steve Jobs made a very surprising announcement. Steve Jobs announced Microsoft would be one of Apple's key strategic partners. Microsoft would invest $150 million into Apple in exchange for non-voting shares and in exchange would license Microsoft Office to Apple for another 5 years. The audience reaction was mixed, but ultimately this proved to be the saving grace for Apple. Without this capital infusion from Microsoft, Apple would've gone bankrupt in less than 90 days. So why did Bill Gates do it? Why did he save Apple? In truth, he wasn't doing it out of the kindness of his heart. Instead, he noticed the looming threat of anti-trust regulations. He knew the Department of Justice was getting ready to break up Microsoft on monopoly grounds, so he did his best to prop-up his competition. Essentially, he saved Apple to save Microsoft. When the anti-trust threat had been resolved in 2001, Bill Gates sold his stake in Apple and moved on. Of course, as we now know today, Apple eclipsed Microsoft (and every other tech company) and Bill Gates' original $150 million stake would've been worth over $50 billion today. He missed out on quite some gains! Under the kind patronage of Nagabhushanam Peddi, Dan Supernault, Samuel Patterson, James Gallagher & Brett Gmoser.

Why NASA Is Sending An $850 Million Drill To Mars

Why NASA Is Sending An $850 Million Drill To Mars

NASA is sending an $850 million lander to Mars. Using a drill to dig deeper into the planet than ever before, Insight will be the first of its kind to study Mars’ interior. This mission will help us learn more about the origins of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------ #NASA #Mars #ScienceInsider Following is the transcript of the video: NASA's about to break new ground like never before, by sending a giant drill to Mars. It's the largest drill NASA has ever sent to space, and it will dig deeper into Mars than ever before. The mission? Uncover clues to one of the most outstanding mysteries in our solar system. NASA's $850 million InSight Lander is the first designed to study the interior structure of Mars. Until now, NASA's landers mainly focused on exploring Mars' surface for signs of potential life. They've touched down near volcanoes, valleys, and canyons. But InSight won't be going anywhere like that, since InSight is not a rover and can't move around. NASA has one shot to land it in the perfect spot, here! Elysium Planitia, sometimes referred to as the biggest parking lot on Mars. It's one of the plainest spots NASA could find and the perfect place for InSight. For one, it's close to the equator, guaranteeing the solar panels that power InSight's instruments will work year-round for its nearly two-year mission. But most importantly, that smooth surface will make it easier for InSight's drill to bore deep into the Martian soil. The drill works like a motorized nail, hammering itself into the ground. Over the course of 40 days, the drill will reach 16 feet into the planet. That's roughly the length of a car. For comparison, NASA's Curiosity Rover only dug about half an inch deep. That's the length of an aspirin pill. As InSight digs, it will occasionally shoot out bursts of heat. By calculating how quickly that heat warms the ground around it, InSight can measure the chemical makeup of the soil. But InSight's drill pulls double duty. As it hammers away, it also sends vibrations through the ground, which are sensitive to different layers that might be hiding under the surface. For example, if Mars has underground lava flows, those vibrations will find them. But this only gives NASA clues to the shallower layers of Mars. To understand the deep inner core, InSight has another tool that will measure how much Mars wobbles on its axis. It works similar to an egg. If you spin an uncooked egg, the liquid yolk will slosh around making the egg wobble. But if the inside is cooked, there's less wobble. Similarly, how much Mars wobbles can tell us whether its core is molten liquid or solid metal. And all these clues can help scientists solve a bigger mystery of how rocky planets like Mars and Earth formed in the first place. By studying the interior of Mars, scientists can get a better grasp on how Mars has evolved over billions of years from a warm, wet world to the desolate landscape it is today. But there's an even bigger objective on the horizon. Ultimately, the more we know about our own solar system, the better we get at searching for other planets beyond our solar system that may have the potential to harbor life. ------------------------------------------------------ Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Why Apple Products Are Getting So Expensive

Why Apple Products Are Getting So Expensive

Apple has almost always had a reputation of pricing their products quite a bit higher than their competition, and this premium cost is commonly referred to as the Apple Tax. And it can be traced as far back as the original iPod in 2001, which had a starting price of $399, or about $570 adjusted for inflation. And when compared to other hard drive-based music players that sold for around $200, the iPod’s price was staggering. And when the iPhone was released in 2007, one of its biggest criticisms was its price, coming in at $499, or about $600 today, and that was with a two-year contract. And don’t forget the MacBook Air, which debuted with a $1,800 price tag. And that got you just 64GB of solid state storage. So the Apple tax is nothing new to longtime Apple users, but there has been an unusual trend upward in almost all Apple’s product categories over the past few years. And I think there’s more to that story than the Apple tax can account for.

Why Not? -------- (Note: Special thanks to Julian Jordan for the official Spanish translation, which is now available under captions.) Script for Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated By Marc Strong Around the world every day, thousands if not millions of people give presentations. Some are great, and have a powerful impact on their audiences. Others...well, let's just say they're works in progress. This is Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated Meet Jim, an aspiring professional trying to make it in the world. Jim used to give presentations like just about everyone else he knew. PowerPoint was his tool of choice. He'd use it like an outline, with a header followed by bullet after bullet, and sometimes even sub-bullets! When he wanted to be fancy, he'd add what usually turned out to be an ineffective chart or sometimes a table. And when Jim wanted to really spice things up, he'd add...yep...clip art. Unfortunately, Jim's approach would often confuse and bore people. This was a problem because he had important things to say. And because it was dimming his prospects for success. Fortunately, Jim learned a better way and didn't stay in the dark for long. Perhaps most importantly, he now focuses on the story he wants to tell. In doing so, he tries to follow a simple structure, with a clear beginning, middle, and end that links together his various points and builds to his conclusion. When formulating his story, Jim uses a simple pad of paper or sicky notes. Staying low tech at this stage helps him think more creatively and stay outside the box. He then considers what tools will help him best tell his story. Jim sometimes opts to use a whiteboard, flip charts, handouts, or even no props at all. When it makes sense for him to use PowerPoint, he tries to remember the adage that sometimes "less is more." He doesn't dumb down his presentations, but he does try to limit each slide to one key idea. Or, depending on the content, he sometimes builds an idea incrementally so it's easy to follow. He looks for visual ways to tell his story, with minimal text, photos, and clear charts and graphs. Quote: "All the so-called "Secrets of success" will not work unless you do. -Unknown" Sometimes he'll use quotes, but he tries to remember that people can't read his slides and truly listen at the same time. Jim still uses plenty of text to help him remember what he wants to say, but he hides it in his notes that only he sees (show view notes screen). Jim's new approach takes more time, energy, and rehearsal, but it's been well worth the effort. His audiences are now much more engaged and better understand and remember his presentations. And, as if that weren't enough...(congrats on the promotion)...his pocketbook doesn't mind either. (Pause) This has been Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated.

History of iOS

History of iOS

iOS is a mobile operating system that Apple created for use on their iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Now iOS is one of the world's most popular mobile operating systems despite only running on Apple’s own hardware. Compare this to the Android mobile operating system, which is licensed by Google to various hardware manufacturers and wireless carriers. Now the debate over which approach is better is a topic we’re not getting into today, because in this video, we’re going to focus on the history of iOS and its development from 2007 to 2018.
