If contemporary accounts may be trusted, the young Mozart must have been highly proficient on the instrument, since he too was employed as a violinist in the local orchestra during his years in Salzburg. His special relationship with the violin finds its sonatas that he wrote in the course of his life. The violin concerto, by contrast, was a genre that caught his attention only once, all five of his contributions to the medium dating from 1774/75. There are five official concertos. But, much remains unclear, however. There is also, a concerto in E flat (K.268), but its authenticity is ope to question, while the D Violin Concerto (K 271i) survives only in the form of a late transcription made in Paris in the 19th century, the original form of which can no longer be reconstructed with any certainty. Britta Sweers The violin virtuoso and conductor Josef Suk (1929-2011) is a representative of a line of Czech performing art of the past. He has developed the legacy of his excellent teachers, mainly Jaroslav Kocian and his grandfather, the composer Josef Suk, who for a long-time was a member of the famed Czech Quartet. From the beginning of his solo career Suk has also been interested in chamber playing, and was for a short time the first violinist of the Prague Quartet (1950–52), and then for a long time of the Suk Trio, which he had established in 1951. In 1961 he was appointed soloist of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Suk has a special liking for the viola, the instrument of his great grandfather Antonín Dvořák. In 1981 he became the artistic leader and conductor of the Suk Chamber Orchestra. His recordings have won various prizes, such as the Grand Prix du disque de l´Academie Charles Cros in Paris six times, in 1972 he won the Edison Prize in Holland, in 1974 the “Wiener Flötenuhr” prize of the Mozart Society in Vienna, and many others. In 1977 Josef Suk received the Golden Disc of Culumbia, the Golden Disc of Supraphon in 1986 and in 1999 he was granted the Platinum Disc of Supraphon for 1,112,000 recordings sold. He has been a teacher of violin playing and has sat on many juries of international competitions. He has also taken part in the work of foundations such as the Dvořák Foundation for Young Performers in Prague. He is president and chairman of the artistic board of the Prague Spring International Music Festival.. http://www.antonindvorak2004.cz Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) PLAYLIST (references recordings) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3UZpQL9LIxMe6H3Sfn2lvPVFzrvhhPO7 Click to buy this recording : https://www.amazon.com/Mozart-Violin-Concertos-Nos-Josef/dp/B01K8MV2RE/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1525017343&sr=8-13&keywords=josef+suk+mozart

Mozart - Complete Church Sonatas

Mozart - Complete Church Sonatas

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Mozart wrote seventeen Church Sonatas (sonata di chiesa), also known as Epistle Sonatas, between 1772 and 1780. These are short single-movement pieces intended to be played during a celebration of the Mass between the Epistle and the Gospel. Three of the sonatas (Nos.12,14,17), include oboes, horns, trumpets and timpani. The rest are scored for organ and strings (with no violas, only two violins and basso continuo), where in some of them (Nos 7-10,13-15,17) the organ has an obbligato solo part, while in the sonatas Nos 1-6,11,12,16, the organ accompanies along with the figured bass. ------------------------------------------------------------ No.1 0:00:06 No.2 0:02:25 No.3 0:06:39 No.4 0:10:43 No.5 0:15:36 No.6 0:18:48 No.7 0:23:31 No.8 0:30:00 No.9 0:36:14 No.10 0:40:18 No.11 0:45:43 No.12 0:51:23 No.13 0:56:47 No.14 1:01:58 No.15 1:06:01 No.16 1:13:08 No.17 1:17:43 ------------------------------------------------------------ Painting: Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) - Imperial summer palace of Schönbrunn, garden façade (c.1759) ------------------------------------------------------------ No copyright infringement intended.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - The Keyboard Concertos Keyboard Concerto No.2 in E MAjor, BWV 1053 I.Allegro (00:00) II.Siciliano (08:04) III.Allegro (12:41) Keyboard Concerto No.3 in D Major, BWV 1054 I.Allegro (19:01) II.Adagio e piano sempre (26:51) III.Allegro (32:43) Keyboard Concerto No.4 in A Major, BWV 1055 I.Allegro (35:33) II.Larghetto (39:41) III.Allegro ma non tanto (45:23) Keyboard Concerto No.5 in F minor, BWV 1056 I.Allegro (49:33) II.Largo (53:10) III.Presto (56:07 Keyboard Concerto No.7 in G minor, BWV 1058 I.Allegro (59:57) II.Andante (1:03:47) III.Allegro assai (1:09:46) Columbia Symphony Orchestra Direction : Vladimir Golschmann Stéréo recordings in 1958,67,69, at NewYork Keyboard Concerto No.1 in D minor, BWV 1052 I.Allegro (1:13:41) II.Adagio (1:22:28) III.Allegro (1:29:50) Academic Symphony Orchestra of Leningrad Direction : Vladislav Slovak Live recording in 1957, at Leningrad Piano/Klavier : Glenn Gould New Mastering in 2018 by AB Label : CBS / Sony In the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and earlier, one may find thematic ideas and harmonic progressions floating freely from one composer to another; sometimes whole movements or even whole compositions were adapted and reworked; and, certainly and most commonly, composers refashioned their own materials to fit new forms or fulfill new functions. The majority of bach’s clavier concertos fall into this latter category as rewrites of previously existing concertos, mostly for violin (click to listen : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydGJn6tegSA&index=11&list=PL3UZpQL9LIxOLRwxl1dEfDrH3c8mX5UB1). Herein lies a principal reason for the clavier domination of the works, for the part previously assigned to the solo violin is now given to the keyboard player’s right hand, and the left hand, as if it were another instrument, plays a bass part. In actual fact, Bach’s usage of the musical material contained in these works did not stop with the concertos themselves. Movements from them can be found reworked and re-orchestrated and fulfilling a completely new function in the church cantatas he wrote for later occasions. In 1837, a noted keyboard virtuoso gave a performance of J.S. Bach’s Clavier Concerto No.1 in D minor. In a notice of the concert, published afterwards, an influential music journalist had the following remarks to make : « I should like to speak of many thoughts that were awakened in my mind by this noble work.. Will it be believed that on the music shelves of the Berlin Singakademie, to which old Welter bequeathed his library, at least seven such concertos, and a countless number of other Bach compositions, in manuscript, are carefully stowed away? Few persons are aware of it, but they lie there notwithstanding. Is it not time, would it not be useful for the German nation, to publish a perfect edition of the complete works of Bach? The idea should be considered, and the words of a practical expert, who speaks of this undertaking on page 76 of the current volume of the Neue Zeitschrift (für Musik) would serve as a motto. He says : ‘’The publication of the works of Sebastian Bach is an enterprise I hope soon to see in execution one that delights my heart, which beats wholly for the great and lofty art of this father of harmony.’’ ‘’Just look it up’’. The virtuoso who performed the Concerto was Felix Mendelssohn. The music journalist was Robert Schumann. The ‘’expert’’ cited was Ludwig Van Beethoven. the quotation was from a letter Beethoven wrote to the music publisher Hoffmeister in 1801. So much for establishing the validity and stature of Bach’s clavier concertos as great works of musical art. The great artistry of the Duo Crommelynck was equaled by their unique cultivation, exuberance, warmth and generosity. This special edition of their recordings of Schubert’s music arose not only in commemoration of their phenomenal musicianship but also their inspiring spirits. These two artists succeeded in giving new life to a form that had fallen into almost complete neglect : music for piano four hands. First performed in the French capital three years later, they soon became know as his Paris Symphonies. The Paris commission called for symphonies for large concert halls, thereby confronting Haydn with an entirely new problem : whereas his earlier symphonies had all been scored for his own chamber orchestra of between twenty-two and twenty-four musicians and intended to entertain the court, he how had to adapt his style to a whole new type of concert. Public concerts were far more common in Paris and London than they were in, say, Vienna. Haydn now had to write for an orchestra of forty violins, ten double basses and double wind, an array of forces that allowed him to achieve a more subtly differentiated handling of timbre, greater autonomy in his use of the individual instrumental groupings and more pointed dynamic contrats. The Paris Symphonies are generally and rightly regarded as one of the high points in Haydn’s output as a symphonic composer, a view that contemporary audiences clearly shared : all six works were greeted with loup applause when premièred in Paris. Yet, if one were to ask where his most innovative contributions lie, it would arguably be within the realm of the classical piano concerto. The challenge for the late 18th-century composers was that of reconciling the Baroque concerto form’s strongest features (distinct timbral contrats between a solo instrumentalist and an orchestra, plus brillant solo writing) with the new style of sonata-allegro. An accomplished virtuoso himself, Mozart elevated the piano soloist’s function to new levels of expression, technique, and dramatic momentum. Consequently, the piano and orchestra were not merely equal partners, but distinct characters in their own right. Mozart’s concertos, however, were far from concert hall staples in the early 20th century. Yet the tide began to turn. A new generation of classically oriented keyboard luminaries, whose ranks included Wanda Landowska, Walter Gieseking, Edwin Fischer and Arthur Schnabel, helped further the cause, as did Lili Kraus. Kraus likened her affinity with Mozart to a mission : ''When I began to explore Mozart, I discovered the infinite beauty of that music, and somehow it is given to me to give life to that beauty. I find it my God-given duty, privilege, and if you like, cross, to consecrate my life to this music.'' Certain pianists and composers become inextricably linked in the eyes of the public. Mention Glenn Gould, for instance, and Bach’s Goldberg Variations come to mind. Artur Schnabel and Beethoven were virtually synonymous; so were Walter Gieseking and Debussy, Arthur Rubinstein and Chopin, Alicia de Larrocha and the Spanish Impressionists. When it came to Mozart’s piano music, several generations of listeners and collector considered Lili Kraus’s interpretations to be the last word… From the synopsis by Jed Distler Mozart - Piano Concertos 9 Jeunehomme,15,16,1,2,3,4,5,6,8 (Century's recording : Lili Kraus/Simon) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHwmL8Md22w&list=PL3UZpQL9LIxMe6H3Sfn2lvPVFzrvhhPO7&t=33s&index=3 Mozart - Piano Concertos No.11,12,13,14,17,18,19 (recording of the Century : Lili Kraus/Simon) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZntL9Y7vcDM&index=2&list=PL3UZpQL9LIxMe6H3Sfn2lvPVFzrvhhPO7 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart PLAYLIST (reference recordings) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3UZpQL9LIxMe6H3Sfn2lvPVFzrvhhPO7 Click to buy the complete edition : https://www.amazon.com/Kraus-Plays-Mozart-Piano-Concer/dp/B01HSI7QDA/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1522751653&sr=1-1&keywords=lili+kraus+mozart

Born in Salzburg, he showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. He wrote more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: "Posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years". Schubert: Complete Symphonies (Full Album)

Schubert: Complete Symphonies (Full Album)

Tracklist below. iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/album/schubert-complete-symphonies/id679992819 Buy CD: http://brilliantclassics.com/articles/s/schubert-complete-symphonies/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/2G261SODymUgyXfuABXJYF Bringing together all seven of Schubert’s completed symphonies, as well as the much-loved B minor ‘Unfinished’, this set charts the development of Schubert’s voice as a symphonist. His first six symphonies were composed between 1813 and 1818 for the orchestra at the religious school that he attended in Vienna. Although they could be considered to be apprentice works, and are clearly influenced by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and – in the case of the Sixth Symphony – Rossini, they are remarkable achievements for such a young composer, and the listener can hear some of the hallmarks of Schubert’s more forward-looking, romantic style, such as a bolder and richer harmonic language, beginning to emerge. After a serious illness in 1822, from which he only partially recovered, Schubert composed his final symphonic masterpieces, the ‘Unfinished’ (1822) and the ‘Great’ (1825–6). From the haunting slow introduction and the extraordinary sense of pathos of the ‘Unfinished’ to the joyful and rhythmically vital ‘Great’ symphony, both works showcase Schubert the symphonist at the peak of his powers and are some of the most popular and enduring pieces in the orchestral canon. Schubert’s complete symphonies are performed here by the legendary Staatskapelle Dresden under the inspired direction of celebrated conductor Herbert Blomstedt, praised by Gramophone for his "incomparably refined sensitivity and canny interpretative prowess". When it came to Mozart’s piano music, several generations of listeners and collector considered Lili Kraus’s interpretations to be the last word… From the synopsis by Jed Distler Mozart - Piano Concertos 9 Jeunehomme,15,16,1,2,3,4,5,6,8 (Century's recording : Lili Kraus/Simon) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHwmL8Md22w&list=PL3UZpQL9LIxMe6H3Sfn2lvPVFzrvhhPO7&t=33s&index=3 Mozart - Piano Concertos No.20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27 (recording of the Century : Lili Kraus/Simon) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvRhkZLM__E&t=25s&list=PL3UZpQL9LIxMe6H3Sfn2lvPVFzrvhhPO7&index=1 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart PLAYLIST (reference recordings) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3UZpQL9LIxMe6H3Sfn2lvPVFzrvhhPO7 Click to buy the complete edition : https://www.amazon.com/Kraus-Plays-Mozart-Piano-Concer/dp/B01HSI7QDA/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1522751653&sr=1-1&keywords=lili+kraus+mozart

Larghetto (1:51:36) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era. Born in Salzburg, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his early death at the age of 35. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He composed more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: "posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years".
