That all changed abruptly when Steve Jobs stepped onstage at Moscone Center in San Francisco and asserted he was introducing “three revolutionary products” in one package—the iPhone. How did iPhone come to be? The story of 'Oumuamua, the first visitor from another star system | Karen J. Meech

In October 2017, astrobiologist Karen J. Meech got the call every astronomer waits for: NASA had spotted the very first visitor from another star system. The interstellar comet -- a half-mile-long object eventually named `Oumuamua, from the Hawaiian for "scout" or "messenger" -- raised intriguing questions: Was it a chunk of rocky debris from a new star system, shredded material from a supernova explosion, evidence of alien technology or something else altogether? In this riveting talk, Meech tells the story of how her team raced against the clock to find answers about this unexpected gift from afar. Today Apple is the most profitable company in the world and it very recently became the first trillion-dollar publicly-traded company in America. And yet just two decades ago Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy; surprisingly, it wasn't Steve Jobs that saved them, but their biggest rival at the time: Microsoft. Throughout the 1990s Microsoft was expanding aggressively, achieving a staggering 90% market share in the personal computer market. Apple, meanwhile, was in rapid decline: developers were making fewer and fewer applications for the Macintosh, while Apple's license for Microsoft Office was expiring. Things were looking grim, until at Apple's yearly conference, Steve Jobs made a very surprising announcement. Steve Jobs announced Microsoft would be one of Apple's key strategic partners. Microsoft would invest $150 million into Apple in exchange for non-voting shares and in exchange would license Microsoft Office to Apple for another 5 years. The audience reaction was mixed, but ultimately this proved to be the saving grace for Apple. Without this capital infusion from Microsoft, Apple would've gone bankrupt in less than 90 days. So why did Bill Gates do it? Why did he save Apple? In truth, he wasn't doing it out of the kindness of his heart. Instead, he noticed the looming threat of anti-trust regulations. He knew the Department of Justice was getting ready to break up Microsoft on monopoly grounds, so he did his best to prop-up his competition. Essentially, he saved Apple to save Microsoft. When the anti-trust threat had been resolved in 2001, Bill Gates sold his stake in Apple and moved on. Of course, as we now know today, Apple eclipsed Microsoft (and every other tech company) and Bill Gates' original $150 million stake would've been worth over $50 billion today. He missed out on quite some gains! Under the kind patronage of Nagabhushanam Peddi, Dan Supernault, Samuel Patterson, James Gallagher & Brett Gmoser.

Former iPhone Factory Worker Explains How They Keep New iPhones A Secret

Former iPhone Factory Worker Explains How They Keep New iPhones A Secret

While the US media scrambles to find out any minor details about future iPhone models, workers in China already know a lot about the device. Dejian Zeng, an NYU grad student who spent 6 weeks working undercover in a Pegatron iPhone factory in Shanghai, explains what the factory would do to prevent leaks as they transitioned into working on the iPhone 7. Following is a transcript of the video: "It’s impossible for workers to take photos or even carry some components out." Dejian Zeng spent 6 weeks working at a Pegatron iPhone factory in China. Here’s how they kept the iPhone 7 a secret. "Workers know how popular the iPhone is in China. And typically when we started producing the iPhone 7, a lot of workers think it’s very cool that they see the products that have not yet been published. In the workshop, we were originally producing the iPhone 6s, and during that time that we were in the workshop, they were already building up some facilities or infrastructure to build the assembly line for iPhone 7. And they had this big curtain that blocked everything. So even though we were in the same workshop, we saw nothing. And later on, we were moved to another sub-factory building to do work there for a while, because they need to rebuild the assembly line that we are working on also. After a while, we were moved back to the factory, and we had the new assembly line producing iPhone 7. We have a locker room. That’s where workers changed their clothes, put their phones, their keys, all their metals. We need to swipe our card, and they have facial recognition. After you get in, you wait in line to go through a metal detector. But that was during the time that I was producing iPhone 6s. When I was producing iPhone 7, they increased their security level. There were two metal detectors in the factories, and they also increased the sensitivity of it. Like, for example, some girls have some bras that have metals in it. All of a sudden, on that specific day, they couldn’t pass the security door, and they needed to go back and change everything. Inside the factories, any kind of metal is not allowed. So I don’t think anybody can bring a camera or something like that inside of the factories. But high-level managers — they’re able to bring their phone. So I’m not sure whether photos can get leaked by that. But every time when they need to go through the metal detectors, the security will ask those managers to press the button on their phone, so that they can see the screen. Because I think there are some cases where they bring an iPhone and put it in a case of a fake phone and just carried it out. A lot of the workers, on the first day they start producing it, we can tell that there’s no headphone jack there. And then we can see that they have two cameras. So those are some things that we can see and we can remember and we can tell the media later on. There are cameras in the workshop, in every assembly line. During the training, they told us that there are some cases where workers were trying to carry iPhones out of the factories and got caught, and they were being sent to the police. So when I was producing iPhone 6, I did see Apple come for audits. I think it was 2 or 3 times. And every time when they come, the manger in the factories got very nervous. They would tell us you need to follow the procedure and sit straight, and don’t talk. Later on, when we started producing iPhone 7, you could see Apple staff there every single day." How a CPU Works

How a CPU Works

*New Course from InOneLesson (Coming Soon): http://SeeCodeClearly.com Uncover the inner workings of the CPU. Author's Website: http://www.buthowdoitknow.com/ See the Book: http://amzn.to/1mOYJvA See the 6502 CPU Simulation: http://visual6502.org/JSSim/index.html For anyone annoyed by the breaths between speaking, try this unlisted version with edited audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkdBs21HwF4 Download the PowerPoint file used to make the video: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzwHNpicSnW0cGVmX0c3SVZzMFk The CPU design used in the video is copyrighted by John Scott, author of the book But How Do It Know?. There are a few small differences between the CPU in the video and the one used in the book. Those differences are listed below but they should not detract from your understanding of either. CONTROL UNIT - This component is called the Control Section in the book. It is called Control Unit here simply because that is a more common name for it that you might see used elsewhere. LOAD INSTRUCTION - In this video, what's called a LOAD instruction is actually called a DATA instruction in the book. The Scott CPU uses two different instructions to move data from RAM into the CPU. One loads the very next piece of data (called a DATA instruction in the book) and the other uses another register to tell it which address to pull that data from (called a LOAD instruction in the book). The instruction was renamed in the video for two reasons: 1) It might be confusing to hear that the first type of data we encounter in RAM is itself also called DATA. 2) Since the LOAD instruction from the book is a more complex concept, it was easier to use the DATA instruction in the video to introduce the concept of moving data from RAM to the CPU . IN and OUT INSTRUCTIONS - In the Scott CPU, there is more involved in moving data between the CPU and external devices than just an IN or an OUT instruction. That process was simplified in the video to make the introduction of the concept easier. ACCUMULATOR - The register that holds the output of the ALU is called the Accumulator in the book. That is the name typically used for this register, although it was simply called a register in the video. MEMORY ADDRESS REGISTER - The Memory Address Register is a part of RAM in the book, but it is a part of the CPU in the video. It was placed in the CPU in the video as this is generally where this register resides in real CPUs. JUMP INSTRUCTIONS - In the book there are two types of unconditional JUMP instructions. One jumps to the address stored at the next address in RAM (this is the one used in the video) and the other jumps to an address that has already been stored in a register. These are called JMP and JMPR instructions in the book respectively. MISSING COMPONENT - There is an additional component missing from the CPU in the video that is used to add 1 to the number stored in a register. This component is called "bus 1" in the book and it simply overrides the temporary register and sends the number 1 to the ALU as input B instead. REVERSED COMPONENTS - The Instruction Register and the Instruction Address Register are in opposite positions in the diagrams used in the book. They are reversed in the video because the internal wiring of the control unit will be introduced in a subsequent video and keeping these registers in their original positions made that design process more difficult. OP CODE WIRING - The wires used by the control unit to tell the ALU what type of operation to perform appear near the bottom of the ALU in the video, but near the top of the ALU in the book. They were reversed for a similar reason as the one listed above. The wiring of the ALU will be introduced in a subsequent video and keeping these wires at the top of the ALU made the design process more difficult.
