Underwater Lawnmowers Are Cleaning Trash Out Of Rivers

Underwater Lawnmowers Are Cleaning Trash Out Of Rivers

This Aquatic Weed Harvester can gather weeds and excessive amounts of trash in waterways of all sizes. Cleantec Infra made the machine that functions similarly like an underwater lawnmower. Its conveyer belt lowers into the water and cuts, collects, and stores the trash/weeds until it needs to be discharged.  The Harvester is one of many ways humans are trying to battle the growing threat of sea pollution all around the world.  _________________________________ Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Boyan Slat: How we will rid the oceans of plastic (May 2017)

Boyan Slat: How we will rid the oceans of plastic (May 2017)

On May 11th 2017, Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, the Dutch foundation developing advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic, announced a design breakthrough allowing for the cleanup of half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in just 5 years. The main idea behind The Ocean Cleanup is to let the ocean currents do the work. An installation of U-shaped screens channels floating plastic to a central point. The concentrated plastic can then be extracted and shipped to shore for recycling into durable products. The improvements involve the introduction of a mobile, or drifting system. Rather than fixing the floating screens to the seabed at great depths, The Ocean Cleanup will apply sea anchors to ensure the floating screens move slower than the plastic. Rather than one massive barrier, the improved, modular cleanup system consists of a fleet of screens. Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now twice the size of Texas and contains 1.8 trillion pieces of trash floating in the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup is an ambitious non-profit committed to removing it, and on Saturday it launches its first system out to sea from the San Francisco Bay. Dutch entrepreneur Boyan Slat came up with the idea when he was 16 years old. "I went scuba diving in Greece and I actually saw more plastic bags than fish around me," said the Ocean Cleanup CEO and founder. "I wondered, why can't we just clean this up?" He founded the organization in 2013 and the team has raised $35 million through crowdfunding campaigns and big donors like Marc Benioff and Peter Thiel. System 001 is a 600 meter long float, with a 3 meter skirt and it's designed to corral plastic and debris. The collected garbage will then be removed by garbage truck-like ships. The initial contraption will be used for testing and aims remove about 50 tons of the garbage, but the goal is to launch 60 systems to reduce the floating garbage patch by 50 percent in the next five years.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. What's hidden under the Greenland ice sheet? | Kristin Poinar

The Greenland ice sheet is massive, mysterious -- and melting. Using advanced technology, scientists are revealing its secrets for the first time, and what they've found is amazing: hidden under the ice sheet is a vast aquifer that holds a Lake Tahoe-sized volume of water from the summer melt. CRAZY Ideas That Actually Worked

CRAZY Ideas That Actually Worked

Any time you’re faced with a problem, surely you’ve racked a few stupid ideas through your mind before you found a practical solution. But once in awhile, it seems those outlandish solutions might just actually be solutions. Here’s 15 times those crazy ideas actually worked. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. Goggles For Dogs Do dogs really need an accessory? Surely all the cutesy clothes and even collars we place on them is enough. However, as ridiculous as the phrase “dog goggles” seems for anyone, it’s a business venture that’s worked out in the dog goggle manufacturers favor. The inventor of the product known as the “doggles” is Jill Doyle and while most would quip that these things look ridiculous, the goggles protect your dog’s eyes from the UV rays of the sun. Since dogs need to run around outside as much as possible, some owners would like to take the extra precaution. The company that sells doggles makes around $5 million in revenue every year and also includes products that are prescribed lenses for dogs with visual impairments. 5. Dropped and Shipped Speaking of conscientious dog owners, let’s take a look at the opposite side of the spectrum. Dog owners in the Madrid suburb of Brunete, Spain were said to have a bad habit of not picking up after their dogs. This problem was becoming such an issue, that efforts were made to stop this problem. And instead of just issuing fines, officials found a better way to to deal with the unsanitary problem. A group of volunteers would look out for the dogs and their owners, bag the poop themselves, and then send it in the mail back to the owners. The practice has said to be highly effective, with the number of dog droppings around Brunete being considerably fewer. 4. Fisherman Wearing Masks A lot of animals aren’t particularly stupid, especially a beast like a Bengal Tiger. However, just because they’re not stupid doesn’t mean they’re super aware of human devices, even one as simple as a mask. Fisherman in the Ganges Delta were dealing with Bengal Tigers sneaking up on them as they tried to do their job and it was becoming a dangerous problem. Instead of hurting the tigers or just moving the a different location, it seemed all that was needed was a prop. To scare away tigers approaching them behind, the fisherman were instructed to wear these masks of a human face, which seemed to trick most tigers into thinking a human being had spotted them. Or the face on the mask is just that displeasing that it just scares them off. 3. Bottled Air You’ve probably heard about people complaining about bottled water, how it’s all a sham and that clean drinking water should come free anyways. So then think about the concept of bottled air. Now that you’ve thought about it for a bit, just know you can buy said product. Vitality Air was created by a Canadian startup company who sell cans of what is said to be “100% pure Rocky Mountain air” for about $32 each. Sounds crazy, sure, but the little novelty product has made loads for itself and it’s said places with higher air pollution are the locations of the biggest buyers of the bottled air. 2. Shade Balls The phrase “shade balls” could mean a lot to people if you weren’t aware of context. But what they actually refer to are the millions of plastic balls that were dumped into the Ivanhoe Reservoir in Los Angeles 2 years ago. The reason stems down to the continuing drought that the state of California has been going through. Placing the 4 inch thick plastic balls in the water would help shade the water from the hot sun, reducing rapid evaporation. Thus, things like bacteria and algae would be less likely to form, and certain chemical substances wouldn’t be able to be produced. Pigs With Munchies Stigma against legalized marijuana has slowly been falling away, especially not that places like Washington State have implemented it legally. But farmers in said state have also implemented the plant, and not in the way you probably think. Instead, cannabis has been incorporated into the pig feed and it’s said to increase the weight of the pigs to up to 30 pounds more--for reasons you can imagine. Eating this new feed has made the pigs here bigger than pigs in other parts of country usually are, which only means good things for the farming trade in Washington.

Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 13 - Home grown… Before we knew too much about turning our homes into eco-friendlier versions of their selves, Icelanders were already far ahead of the game. They use the earth’s natural dirt to insulate their homes, which means once the grass starts growing, you’re blending in with the landscape beautifully. Also bear in mind that building materials are not easy to come by in more remote areas, so this is the perfect solution. By owning one of these homes, you’ll blend right in. 12 - Ready for Take Off… This Boeing 727 Hotel in Costa Rica is located deep in the heart of the jungle. So not only are you heading into the seriously awesome location of a jungle, but you can also brag that you’ve overnighted in a disused airplane flew from South Africa to Columbia once upon a time. Many amazing conversions have taken place in old aircraft, from restaurants, to homes, hotels and even a kindergarten. 11 - Rock On… Over in Utah you’ll find homes that have been blasted into a rock wall that form part of the Rockland Ranch Community. Around 100 people live there, and the area was founded 35-years ago. 10 - Cliff Hanger… Although Xuan Kong Si is actually a Monastery, I’ve added it to our list today – because technically, it is home to the monks that reside there. This particular mountain is considered sacred, and the Monastery in Mid Air – which is what Xuan Kong Si translated means – has been hanging there since 491 AD. To this day, architects are in awe of how they managed to get these dwellings to hang like this off the side of the cliff. They do know how it was done, but it’s remarkable they were able to do so. They were built high up as either a defence mechanism against marauders, or to protect themselves from floods. 9 - Home is where the heart is… This big house is located on Elliðaey Island, Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago in Iceland. An incredible view from above, but you’ll never be allowed to visit there. It was built in the 1700’s and at that time 5 families lived on the island. The house is now owned by a hunting club and you have to be a member to get there. They don’t have electricity but fortunately they do have a sauna. 8 - Oh, the places you’ll go… Over in Northern England these treehouses served as a form of protest. The residents of the treehouses built them to prevent authorities from quarrying for gritstone in the historic Nine Ladies Sit in Stanton Lees. 7 - Time to go home… This is the Brooklyn Clock Tower Home and it’s got a hefty price tag attached to it. It costs $15 million and offers the lucky owners a view of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. It’s 6,813-square-foot and at one stage was bring rented out for $50,000 a month! 6 - Welcome Home… Built in the 1700’s, let’s take a walk around Yemen’s Dar al-Hajar palace. The more modern part on top of the hill was built in the 1930’s by Yahya Muhammad Hamiddin, an Islamic Spiritual leader. The rooms of the palace are built into the side of a tall rock spire and you can buy a ticket and walk through this 5-story rock palace. 5 - The house of the rising sun… Although it’s uninhabited, this is just worth a share because it’s so bizarre. It’s known as the Floating Castle near Krasnosilka in Ukraine, and is actually an abandoned granary. 4 - Home is where you lay your hat… We head to Tunisia and pop in for tea at Matmâta. Thought to date back to the Roman times, inhabitants have dug these monstrous pits into the ground and tunnelled into the sides to create their living space. Nobody really knew about this place until the mid-60’s and that was thanks to the Star Wars film, A New Hope, where Luke Skywalker made his home on the planet Tatooine. Why they are built like this is not certain, but it could possibly have been to hide from the Egyptians or some like to believe that desert monsters used to live in those underground tunnels. 3 - Head for the hills… Admittedly, it’s not a house but a hotel, but the location is most certainly surreal! The Solvay hut is located at 13,000 feet on the Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland. It offers a resting place for weary hikers! 2 - House on a hill… In this case, it would be more of a case of house in a hill. This was the creation of SeARCH and Christian Muller Architects, and the entire home is built into a hill. The shape allows for lots of natural light to filter into the home, exquisite panoramic views and loads of shelter. 1...

These 10 Inventions Are Saving The Earth

These 10 Inventions Are Saving The Earth

1. This bin collects garbage from the sea. Seabin has a pump that creates a flow of water. The garbage is caught in a bag, allowing water to flow out back to sea. 2. This machine crushes beer bottles into usable sand. 200 grams of powder form each bottle is recycled to preserve beaches. 3. SaltWater Brewery created edible packaging to save sea life. The six-pack rings are made of barley and wheat. Sea life can eat the rings safely. 4. AIR-INK can turn air pollution into ink. it collects carbon soot from a car's exhaust. Then it is processed into a high-quality black ink. 5. These edible water blobs are biodegradable. The capsule is made from a seaweed extract. A greener solution to creating waste-free packaging. 6. This "Ocean Cleanup" machine has a giant floating pipe to capture plastic. The pipe moves with the waves and has floating anchors. The plastic is a; gathered in the center for a boat to remove. 7. Avani's biodegradable bags are saving sea life and reducing ocean pollution. They are made from cassava root and natural starches. Making them harmless for animal consumption. 8. This machine recycles tires. They are turned into rubber crumb for artificial grass. 9. Aquaponics combines fish farming and hydroponics. As the fish eat and grow they produce waste. The wastewater is given to plants as a fertilizer. The plants absorb the nutrients in the water and they are returned to the fish tanks. A natural process to growing food. 10. HomeBiogas 2.0 turns food scraps into cooking gas. The gas flows from the system directly to the kitchen stove. It can be fed up to six liters of waste and digest almost anything. HomeBiogas can also create fertilizer that goes back into soil. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Waimea River Break

Waimea River Break

Waimea River Break, North Shore, Oahu BEFORE PEOPLE START MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE, I'D LIKE YOU TO TAKE A SECOND TO THINK ABOUT WHERE ALL RIVERS LEAD. Here's a hint - (into the ocean!) When the waimea river fills up to capacity it breaks through the sand and flows into the ocean. It starts with a trickle then turns into a raging river. Once the water is finished flowing, the waves from the ocean build up the sand again and block the river from flowing into the ocean.

Where Is The Biggest Garbage Dump On Earth?

Even though 80% of trash starts on land, tons of it ends up in the ocean, swirling around in a massive patch of plastic debris. old: quick ocean cleaner ship remove plastic and oil -v1 - go view new version

--- GO SEE VIDEO OF NEW UPGRADED VERSION 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URy9WSZUyFQ here is my idea of recycling a ship to clean the ocean. Advantages: - quick travel to polluted place, dirt is still local, not yet settled or decomposed - "cheap" construction: recycling of existing ship - fast cleaning of selected polluted area - no waiting for currents or wind - adaptable to type of pollution, variable degrees of filtering: change conveyor belt to fleece or large mesh as needed - very large sweep, combine a few ships for even larger sweep - selectable depth - possible onboard treatments: - drying, sorting, recycling or storage - remove unwanted material (fish etc..) - large onboard storage - possible to use recovered plastic as fuel?
