Underwater Lawnmowers Are Cleaning Trash Out Of Rivers

Underwater Lawnmowers Are Cleaning Trash Out Of Rivers

This Aquatic Weed Harvester can gather weeds and excessive amounts of trash in waterways of all sizes. Cleantec Infra made the machine that functions similarly like an underwater lawnmower. Its conveyer belt lowers into the water and cuts, collects, and stores the trash/weeds until it needs to be discharged.  The Harvester is one of many ways humans are trying to battle the growing threat of sea pollution all around the world.  _________________________________ Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Deep Sea Fish Farming in Geodesic Domes: Upgrade

Deep Sea Fish Farming in Geodesic Domes: Upgrade

In this episode of Upgrade, Motherboard goes to Baja California, Mexico to get a firsthand look at these free floating pods, and to get an understanding for why we need better ways to cultivate our future food sources. Whether it’s found on a plate of sushi, grilled in our backyard, or thrown on pasta, seafood is a staple for many diets around the world, and demand is growing. And as the commercial seafood industry booms, fish stocks worldwide face perilous declines. We’ve surpassed our capacity to sustainably fish wild caught fish, shrimp, and mollusks from the ocean, and so we’ve turned to aquaculture, or fish farming, as a strategy to meet demand for our growing appetites for water-borne critters. The aquaculture industry is growing fast. According to the FAO, per capita production of seafood from aquaculture has increased 6.9 percent annually since 1970. Unfortunately for us and for our Earth, current methods of fish farming often involve crowded, tethered pens, which can have poor water circulation and contribute to the spread of disease, and put large amounts of environmental stress on the surrounding waterways. This is where Steve Page of Ocean Farm Technologies comes in. Taking inspiration from naturally-occurring schools of fish and Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes, Page co-designed the Aquapod, a free floating, untethered deep ocean fish habitat which reduces overcrowding, and creates less stress on surrounding environments due to its unique ability to change location with the ocean's current. New Deep-Sea Robot Will Help Us Explore Oceans Throughout the Solar System

Named for the Ancient Greek god of the Underworld, the Hadal Zone is the pitch-black part of our oceans below 6,000 meters. Now, imagine a fleet of robots able to roam freely in the parts of the ocean that have been almost impossible for humans to reach, and bring back what they see: such as lifeforms that can survive with zero sunlight, very little nutrition, under pressure that could crush a car. OceanX's research vessel #Alucia took engineers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to test a brand-new prototype that will one day explore these remote, unforgiving parts of our planet, and eventually, oceans throughout our solar system. Whirlpool Turbines Can Provide 24/7 Renewable Energy For Dozens Of Homes

This whirlpool turbine can power dozens of homes, providing energy 24 hours a day. Belgian company Turbulent have possibly come up with a solution to generate energy for small-scale rural areas. Using the power of water, the turbine can be installed to most river and canals, using the current to produce energy - which the creators claim is enough to power up to 60 homes. Could this be the future for all energy production? Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. The surprising solution to ocean plastic | David Katz

The surprising solution to ocean plastic | David Katz

Can we solve the problem of ocean plastic pollution and end extreme poverty at the same time? That's the ambitious goal of The Plastic Bank: a worldwide chain of stores where everything from school tuition to cooking fuel and more is available for purchase in exchange for plastic garbage -- which is then sorted, shredded and sold to brands who reuse "social plastic" in their products. Join David Katz to learn more about this step towards closing the loop in the circular economy. "Preventing ocean plastic could be humanity's richest opportunity," Katz says. The ocean plastic cleanup of Boyan Slat - Docu - 2018

The ocean plastic cleanup of Boyan Slat - Docu - 2018

With the ocean plastic cleanup, Boyan Slat has set up the first and the greatest ocean plastic cleanup campaign in history. And it all started about five years ago, with a graduation project about the plastic soup in the ocean. Today, Boyan Slat has eighty employees, and he is about to roll out his first Ocean Cleanup system in the Pacific. VPRO Backlight follows Boyan Slat closely on the exciting journey of the ocean plastic cleanup. Boyan Slat's fight against the plastic soup. By now, everybody will have seen the images of the plastic soup in the ocean. And everybody agrees that something has to be done. But it is not all that clear how we should tackle the plastic soup problem, or what would work best. Around this time, in the Pacific, between San Francisco and Hawaii, the brainchild of the inventor Boyan Slat is put in place: System 001. This five million dollar and 600-metre long floating colossus is the starting point for the largest ocean plastic cleanup campaign in history. Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old pioneer has worked towards this moment, day and night, for five years on end. Today, his 'The Ocean Cleanup' foundation employs eighty people with only one mission: a plastic-free ocean by the year 2050. To get to that point, over one hundred systems will be tug to the centres of the five different gyres. Those places in the oceans where plastic waste accumulates as a result of the ocean current. At the same time, we will have to come up with a solution at the source to avoid plastic waste ending up in the ocean in the first place. For with a plastic consumption of 320 million tonnes a year, something will have to change at the source too. VPRO Backlight followed the preparations for the long-awaited launch up close. What are the chances of success for his mission? And who are his examples and financiers? And whose corner does Boyan Slat think the ball is in: citizens, the government, or technology? Boyan Slat: How we will rid the oceans of plastic (May 2017)

Boyan Slat: How we will rid the oceans of plastic (May 2017)

On May 11th 2017, Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, the Dutch foundation developing advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic, announced a design breakthrough allowing for the cleanup of half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in just 5 years. The main idea behind The Ocean Cleanup is to let the ocean currents do the work. An installation of U-shaped screens channels floating plastic to a central point. The concentrated plastic can then be extracted and shipped to shore for recycling into durable products. The improvements involve the introduction of a mobile, or drifting system. Rather than fixing the floating screens to the seabed at great depths, The Ocean Cleanup will apply sea anchors to ensure the floating screens move slower than the plastic. Rather than one massive barrier, the improved, modular cleanup system consists of a fleet of screens. Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

Ocean Cleanup Launched A Plastic Catcher

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now twice the size of Texas and contains 1.8 trillion pieces of trash floating in the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup is an ambitious non-profit committed to removing it, and on Saturday it launches its first system out to sea from the San Francisco Bay. Dutch entrepreneur Boyan Slat came up with the idea when he was 16 years old. "I went scuba diving in Greece and I actually saw more plastic bags than fish around me," said the Ocean Cleanup CEO and founder. "I wondered, why can't we just clean this up?" He founded the organization in 2013 and the team has raised $35 million through crowdfunding campaigns and big donors like Marc Benioff and Peter Thiel. System 001 is a 600 meter long float, with a 3 meter skirt and it's designed to corral plastic and debris. The collected garbage will then be removed by garbage truck-like ships. The initial contraption will be used for testing and aims remove about 50 tons of the garbage, but the goal is to launch 60 systems to reduce the floating garbage patch by 50 percent in the next five years.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. The 20-Year-Old With a Plan to Rid the Sea of Plastic

The 20-Year-Old With a Plan to Rid the Sea of Plastic

Subscribe to MOTHERBOARD: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-To-MOTHERBOARD Boyan Slat's story is not quite that of a 20-year-old Wunderkind who magically found a potential fix to a longstanding problem. It's perhaps more accurately described as a combination of personal dedication and trial and error. When going through his old prototypes for a technology that would passively scrub oceans of plastic, he's almost embarrassed of his early concepts. "But that's what science is really," Slat said. "It's a work in progress." The crowdfunding campaign behind Slat's Ocean Cleanup Project was announced with strong bidding, no matter: "With two million dollars we can make a theoretical concept come true." With just two days left in his campaign, Slat successfully collected the funding for his project, bringing him one step closer to realizing a vision of plastic-free oceans. What Every US State Is Best and Worst At

What Every US State Is Best and Worst At

What US state is the best? People talk about the United States a lot. It’s a major world leader with the largest economy on the planet and the highest immigration rate in the world. It must be a great place to live, but like any country, it’s not the best at everything. We’re gonna look at what each state in the US is the best and worst at! TIMESTAMPS: New England 1:15 The Mid-Atlantic region 3:01 The South 4:31 Florida 6:06 The Midwest 8:24 Konsas 9:08 The Southwestern region 11:41 New Mexico 12:40 The westernmost region 13:00 #usastates #newyork #usafacts Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - Maine is the most well-behaved state, with the lowest rate of violent crime in the entire country. - Vermont is the best at gender equality when it comes to employment and income rates. - Connecticut’s residents have the cleanest teeth! Statistically speaking, they’re the most responsible about visiting the dentist regularly. - New York not only has the most densely populated city in America, it’s also the homestate of the most presidents (7) and vice presidents (11). - New Jersey, despite being the butt of so many jokes, has the lowest suicide rate in the country. - Maryland has the best household income rates in the country at an average of $80,000 per year. - Virginia has the lowest asthma rate in the US. That must mean they have the cleanest air, right? Wrong! - West Virginia is the most equal state regarding education, race, and income level. However, only 19% of the population goes on to get a college degree. - Florida: great for vacationing, not so much for living! It’s got the most popular amusement park in not just the country but the whole world: Universal Orlando Resort. - Alabama is the best at college football: their universities have racked up 16 national championship victories. - Louisiana is famous for New Orleans and for the Port of South Louisiana. It’s the largest in the nation, overseeing 60% of the country’s grain exports. - Tennessee has the highest number of caves in the country, so if you’ve ever wanted to go spelunking, get a group together and head on over! But be careful not to hurt your mouth on your expeditions! - Kentucky’s another great place for exploring caves; they’ve got the longest cave system in the entire world! If you’re interested in checking it out, it’s Mammoth Cave National Park. - Kansas is the largest producer of wheat in the nation. Maybe all those endless flat wheat fields have something to do with the fact that this state is also ranked as having the ugliest natural scenery in the US. - North Dakota boasts the highest quality of life in America and the fastest growing economy. - Indiana is the best at high school basketball, but also has more meth labs than any other state. - Texas is the biggest state in the continental US, and as such produces the most energy and has the highest migration rate: over 1,000 people move to Texas each day. - Nevada makes more tax money from gambling than any other state in the country and has the highest rated nightlife. People See the Double-slit Experiment for the First Time

I have made a follow-up video to clarify some flaws in this explainer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yotBpxXiivA Quantum physics is weird. I hope this video makes you interested to read more about the experiment https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-slit_experiment Big thanks to my friends for being part of this video: Caitie Browne: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheCaitieDiaries Matt Beat: https://www.youtube.com/user/iammrbeat Victor Osinga: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCen2jxwXGgrbF5vVDLQU0IA and second channel... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1d_o4DSOzPYn_XFGjJTbFQ Jack Hendy (my brother): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuE39Mrrup_pfLUZKs3xPZg Willie Rates: https://www.youtube.com/user/tobirates Special mention to Kevin Li who's footage was lost to unfortunate circumstances... https://www.youtube.com/user/JustKevYTP The base footage is from Dr Quantum - Double-slit experiment, taken from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfPeprQ7oGc. The clip is originally from "What The Bleep Do We Know!?: Down The Rabbit Hole". A disclaimer is that this organisation contains some less-than-scientific ideas and supports some pseudoscience from what i've seen. That being said, I find this clip of Dr. Quantum to be an excellent educational tool for the double-slit experiment. Please subscribe ❤ https://www.youtube.com/user/tibees?s... Waimea River Break

Waimea River Break

Waimea River Break, North Shore, Oahu BEFORE PEOPLE START MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE, I'D LIKE YOU TO TAKE A SECOND TO THINK ABOUT WHERE ALL RIVERS LEAD. Here's a hint - (into the ocean!) When it has been raining and the waimea river fills up to capacity it breaks through the sand and flows into the ocean. It starts with a trickle then turns into a raging river. Once the water is finished flowing, the waves from the ocean build up the sand again and block the river from flowing into the ocean. What is happening here is people are speeding up the process a little. For all the worriers out there who think the beach is now ruined - after a few hours of this the river is blocked from flowing into the ocean again by the sand that gets built up from the legendary Waimea Bay waves. All goes back to normal after a few hours. Letting the river flow into the ocean like this is also beneficial to the Waimea valley upstream. If the river wasn’t allowed to flow into the ocean, the Waimea valley would flood anytime there is a lot of rain. The Waimea Valley is home to a beautiful botanical garden And a farmers market that is enjoyed by many visitors a day. So flooding there would be unfortunate. The world renowned Waimea Bay life guards at this beach know when the river is full enough and when the sand can be dug out. We tried tried starting it the day before and they stopped us. The next day we showed up at the beach and noticed people (locals) had brought shoves and the life guards let us start digging. They supervise to keep everyone safe while allowing people to have some fun. The beach is not ruined, no one is stranded - you can get to the parking lot or road from either side of the river mouth. And honestly it was one of the most memorable days we’ve had at this beach. If you’re in Oahu in the winter, watch for a high river at Waimea Bay and you might get lucky. Sometimes the river breaks through on its own during the night and you miss it. You’ll know if it just happened if the river banks are really high and steep. And if they are, you missed it but the high sand banks are really fun to play on. I believe this happens several times over the winter months depending on rain fall.
